Great show, as always. And thank you for mentioning the great Scott Muni. I've lost count of all the amazing artists he introduced to this humble boy from Queens (especially Bowie).

@Todd: I also immediately thought of that same seven-year-old Bowie fan first and foremost when I found out. Beautiful tribute, in both your words and his music.

www.bowiewonderworld.com... :
(allegedly) Bowie: "The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground - 1967 Verve?
Brought back from New York by a former manager, Ken Pitt. Pitt had done some kind of work as a PR man that had brought him into contact with the Factory. Warhol had given him this coverless test pressing (I still have it, no label, just a small sticker with Warhol's signature on it) and said, "you like weird stuff, see what you think of this". What I 'thought of this' was that here was the best band in the world. In December of that year, my band Buzz broke up but not without my demanding we play 'Waiting For The Man' as one of the encore songs at our last gig. Amusingly, not only was I to cover Velvet's song before anyone else in the world, I actually did it before the album came out. Now that's the essence of Mod."

I've been spending the last couple of hours setting up a new receiver and turntable at home. For most of my life my traditional first album, whether after moving and reconnecting my stereo or after getting something new, has been 'Young Americans' but for now I'm just sitting here listening to the radio. I'll test out the turntable later.

Todd, that 1980 Floor Show Midnight Special was a major mindblower for me as well. I definitely remember Amanda Lear and the weird way she said Bowie's name, as if the first syllable of Bowie rhymed with cow. "Stayed tuned for more of Bow-ee and his guests".

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@AF: ...I think they do that in the UK?

Your memories of recording off of TV hit home. I had a cassette recorder by 3rd grade or so and recorded off of the radio and later, TV, especially the Friday night music shows.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Perfect encapsulation of the early-mid-1970s: Cassette-player & Bowie tied together for me too: taped my older brother playing 'Future Legend' off 'Diamond Dogs' from the other room: When you're a sheltered 1970s 10-year-old - that's spooky stuff...

Lou Reed: "He has a melodic sense that's just well above anyone else in rock & roll. Most people could not sing some of his melodies. He can really go for a high note. Take 'Satellite of Love,' on my Transformer album. There's a part at the very end where his voice goes all the way up. It's fabulous."
