funny i really started to love the song because of the Ronettes' version ... hahaha ...
(the Beach Boys recording was played a hundered times a month on our WDR-radio in the early 80ies, so it had got a bit on my nerves).

"Come to Me" has such a lush and delicious vibe to it, and was thinking about how Cibo Matto managed to capture some of that feeling the following year with "Sugar Water"... Michel Gondry worked with both to come up with some amazing music videos as well.

"Bang, bang, bang on the wall from dusk til dawn." This reminds me of an old neighbor who who would play Ladyhawke at full volume in her apartment. From dusk to dawn.
  4:43pm modchick65:

David Bowie's "Modern Love." Thank you, David Bowie, for, among other things, contributing to the best junior high dance music ever.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 4:44pm listener james from westwood:

As odd as this sounds, I don't think I've heard this Bowie cut all week. If Kurt G played it, I may have been in the loo. Glad to hear it now! This album was my entry point on his work.

From the ONLY period of Bowie's career that I don't love. But I can live with it...

Ivor Reymonde?
Greeeaaat song, great orchestra !!
  4:55pm P-90:

@Disco King: he even managed to alienate himself at that point, for the rest of his life he never stopped "disowning" the Let's Dance/Glass Spider era. But: if you're Bowie, your "embarrassments" can be better that a lot of other artist's "successes"...
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Guido from Cologne:

"Gomelsky produced" does not say much.
He managed, and took the tapes to paris in order to bootleg the track on BYG-Records and other Charly precursors. I don't think he did sth. technickally.
  4:56pm The Disco King:

Unfortunately, I started to become aware musically right around the Let's Dance era. Which was more than enough to deter one from digging behind the 8 or 9 hits from the 70s one heard incessantly on "album-oriented rock" stations at the time (and hence, from uncovering the true genius of his work during that era, which lay behind those major hits).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Bronwyn Bishop:

So wonderful to hear I Can Hear Music! And Bjork. And Bowie :(
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Guido from Cologne:

Bowie said that Let's Dance was his low point artistically (if i gfot it right)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Bronwyn Bishop:

And now Francoise! You are killing it today Shelia!
Avatar 4:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Lots of Artists are misrepresented by the three songs Commercial Radio plays (after all). One way Bowie is actually like TheWh♂: lotsa people especially younger wondering what the fuss is...
  4:59pm sugarwolf:

Françoise! She has a birthday coming up and she's been ill so.... I'm a little worried!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Adrian in London:

@sugarwolf I know! I can't even begin to think about that…
  5:01pm The Disco King:

It would be just too much to lose Françoise now, also.
  5:01pm JakeGould:

@GuidoFromCologne: David Bowie on Let’s Dance: “I wonder how many Velvet Underground albums these people have in their record collections?' I suddenly felt very apart from my audience. And it was depressing, because I didn't know what they wanted.” en.wikipedia.org...

  5:03pm modchick65:

@JakeGould Well, I was only 12 at the time, so I didn't have any. But because I developed a love for David Bowie from those songs, I was put on a path to later acquire some Velvet Underground records.

  5:04pm JakeGould:

@modchick65: Pretty much in agreement; I was a teen in 1983 anyway so pop is pop. That album led to me getting “Changes One” and “Changes Two” and then lead me to other things.
  5:05pm The Disco King:

The 80s seemed to do a number on a lot of people, musically.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 5:06pm JtotheK:

I love the Modern Love tune...and when I hear it now I think of how it's used in Frances Ha. Thanks for playing it!
  5:06pm modchick65:

@JakeGould. Totally. That said, while I love records like Low and Scary Monsters, "Modern Love" remains probably my favorite song by him... just because of the time/place memories.
  5:07pm The Disco King:

But anything from Bowie gives me goosebumps now. Thanks for playing that, Sheila.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Adrian in London:

@TheDiscoKing It's nigh on impossible to listen to Where Are We Now? without completely melting down now.

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 5:12pm chris:

Thank you @SwanGone, I can't wait to dig into this new world of Gong + Gilli Smyth.
  5:15pm The Disco King:

@Guido - right, the last thing we should do is be resentful of artists for making money once in a while. Especially when nearly all of them have had their share of rough times, $-wise.

@ The Disco King - Peter Frampton's dad was one of his art teachers in school
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Guido from Cologne:

I think flipside of "Puppet" is one of her greatest ("Had A Dream last Night"), kind of soft ska with bossa feel on it
Avatar 5:23pm Andy in Berlin:

Thank you, Sheila!
Avatar 5:24pm KP:

Oh, no
  5:25pm The Disco King:

@VP - thanks, everything about that crowd and that era fascinates me.

Dug the Lulu!! The one cover I haven't heard yet this week has been Nirvana's, of this cut, and I'm glad, b/c the double-punch of Bowie and Cobain would fucking wreck me.
Avatar 5:27pm Cecile:

didn't bowie take peter Frampton on tour with him for a while when Frampton was trying to get some traction in the music biz again?
  5:27pm The Disco King:

BTW, the NYT today on his painting: http://nyti.ms/1OlPFaD

Frampton played guitar on the Glass Spider tour, '87

This Geminis 45 is SWEET! I just checked and I have 2 of their 45's, but neither is this one. AAARGH!!!

I remember he sang the bridge verses on "Sons of The Silent Age" - very cool

I have to say that on NYE I did not leave the dance floor when "uptown funk", "get lucky" and "yeah" were played all in a row.
Avatar 5:36pm Cecile:

never apologize, never explain.
  5:36pm modchick65:

Ha. I learned about Dusty Springfield from the Pet Shop Boys. But I didn't really like that song. That song was like the Berlin "Take My Breath Away" of the Pet Shop Boys.
  5:36pm The Disco King:

@Cecile: the DJ's motto!
Avatar 5:37pm Michael Shelley:

Groovy show!
Avatar 5:37pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm timurf:

most people recognize Samantha Fox for her raw musical talent. but only true fans appreciate that she also had one righteous pair of hooters
Avatar 5:40pm Cecile:

Sheila, you're the anti-me. That's probably a good thing.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 5:40pm listener james from westwood:

She might have been my intro to Dusty Springfield, too, which the Pet Shop Boys continued via "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"
  5:40pm modchick65:

I seriously have to keep myself from standing in my office shouting along to the words to this song at the top of my lungs. I haven't heard it in AGES.
  5:40pm JakeGould:

There are no guilty pleasures. This Samantha Fox reminds me of 1980s summers on the boardwalk in Coney Island.
Avatar 5:42pm Baumer!:

If Salt-N-Peppa or Johnny Hates Jazz is played after this I have a feeling that I'll suddenly have a Hot Tub Time Machine time travel style situation going on.
