Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

On one hand, I feel like tears for Lemmy. On the other hand, he wouldn't want it that way. He'd want straight-up rock and roll. Thanks, Diane. Let's do this thing!
Avatar 12:05pm nathaxn walker:

Thank You Diane!!!

So many good songs. So much power. Agreed, Sacrifice is a killer collection.

Avatar 12:22pm crateslinger:

ok - one more name dropping story. I watched Lemmy beat my friend Franky (RIP) at pinball at the Wa Wa hut on Avenue A in 1990. He was pretty quiet but also very funny.
Avatar 12:22pm Chris from DC:

Not a story really, but I saw them here in DC at the Bayou, a relatively small venue, in the 80s. Unforgettable.
Avatar 12:23pm Cecile:

A friend of mine did a videotaped interview with Motorhead before a gig in '84. He said Lemmy and the band set fire to a tablecloth afterward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Stevel:

Remembering an interview from way back that inadvertently explained Lemmy's mike placement. When ask how he approached his vocals he said "I throw my head back and yell like hell."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Rory:

I have not stopped listening to Motorhead, Hawkwind, Sam Gopal, and The Rockin' Vickers since I heard that Lemmy had died on Monday evening.
Avatar 12:24pm nathaxn walker:

That Sam Gopal album is incredible!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Rory:

Avatar 12:35pm MenfussMike:

I met Lemmy and the band backstage at a Biker Rally in Cherokee, North Carolina in 2009. It was the absolute best environment to see Motorhead. Before they went on, all the Iron Horses cranked up. Anyway, me and a few of my buddies watched the show from backstage. I wore my Little Richard shirt, because I knew Lemmy loves Little Richard. I had no intention of talking to Lemmy, I mean what are you gonna say to the guy, but after the show I got my pic taken with him and offered him a "pull" off my jar of moonshine. He leaned in and said "huh". I go "would you like some moonshine?" He said "Oh no", I then said "Well happy trails". He paused, kinda looked away, looked back as he was getting into his bus, nodded his head and kinda laughed and said "Yeah". It was a moment. Oh and I also got to take many huffs off of his oxvgen tank that was set up backstage.
Avatar 12:36pm Cecile:

Lemmy helped out a hell of a lot of female musicians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Nate K:

"Please Don't Touch" = peak rock action

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Tome:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm coe:

When I saw MÖTÖRHEAD this past Sept. The inbetween song stuff was obvious that he was battling through Phil did most of the talking and there were definitely some screw ups here and there but man he still played like a m*th*rf*ck*r and even gave Micky a scalding on stage when he screwed up a little.
Avatar 12:58pm MenfussMike:

Yea my buddy saw them in St Louis and said Lemmy was really struggling. said Saxon were great though.
Avatar 12:59pm nathaxn walker:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Rory:

MenfussMike, I was at that show in St.Louis. It was hard to watch him like that, but I still got to see Lemmy live. So, I'm happy about that.
Avatar 1:00pm nathaxn walker:

sword in one hand, lit cigarette in the other, drawn-on denim cut-offs, no shirt - awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm coelacanth:

Hahaha! that's hilarious!
  1:03pm Dean:

Bolo tie's the clincher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm coe:

I was so happy we got to see that show as my wife had only recently REALLY got into MÖTÖRHEAD so that she had a chance to see them is really cool.I had the chance to see them one more time at Jones BEach but could not make it. I go back and forth with how I feel about haveing missed that show.
Avatar 1:03pm nathaxn walker:

Dean - I was just thinking that!
  1:04pm nickromby:

i remember seeing morothead with voivod and wendo o williams at the ritz in the 80s. (first voi vod experience, di!) - but my most memorable lemmy quote was from a show at the club bene in new jersey when someone was head banging at the front of the stage and knocking the mic stand into lemmys mouth and he got the kids attention and said, 'stop doing that or i shall be forced to kick you in the eye.' - it was pretty great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm coelacanth:

"valhalla is beyond the grave". ..i guess Lemmy died in battle, hey.
Avatar 1:08pm MenfussMike:

saw Motorhead opening for WASP in Memphis 1997. Impotent Sea Snakes played too. Next time saw them around Halloween 1999. They played in the woods at a water park in Nashville. I was literally watching the show with a tree behind me. Nashville Pussy were to play but they got kicked off the bill for not being "family friendly". Lemmy made a point to say Nashville Pussy as much as possible in between songs. Saw them on the opening night of European tour in Dublin, which was Halloween around 2009. Danko Jones opened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Rich in Washington:

One of the first things I thought when I heard the news about Lemmy was 'I bet Diane is gonna do one hell of a show'
Avatar 1:08pm Cheri Pi:

I'm so glad I got to see Motorhead in each decade starting with the 80's
  1:08pm janimpala:

The one I have is when Motorhead played NYC the first time at Irving Plaza summer of 81. I took the G to the L and got off at Union Sq. As I was walking towards Irving Place I see Lemmy and Phil coming up out of the IRT stairs, Lemmy has his bass. Oh cool they took the subway. I get to Irving Plaza, and there's a small group out front. There's a yellow Checker cab with the door open and the cabbie is yelling at the guy who's trying to get out. "PAY YER FARE!!" snarls the cabby. "But But I don't have any Yank dollars!" sez the long haired skinny guy in the back. Lemmy and Phil arrive out front and start laughing at the scene. The guy in the back of the cab is Fast Eddie, who apparently would not brave the NYC subway. "YOUSE AINT LEAVIN' UNTIL YOU OR ONE O YER FREAK FRIENDS PAYS THREE DOLLARS!!!" Eddie begs Lemmy, begging anybody to pay the three dollar fare, he looks worried and concerned. Lemmy and some of the crew are still pointing and laughing at the predicament. We laugh too, but a little uncomfortably because the cabby is really getting irate, it was wild west city NY and we saw Taxi Driver which was filmed literally just a few blocks away. Who knows this cabby could be packing iron and lose his shit over three bucks. This goes on for anoither ten minutes until the manager comes out and pays the cabby his three dollars. Later that night after the show (there was like maybe 75 people there, Ace of Spades was still very new) I got to hang with Lemmy at the back bar after the show (Phil collapsed and went to hospital), I got him to autograph a movie section form the Daily News, Lemmy picked out the Escape From New York movie ad, "Oi, that'sf wot were doin' next, yeah?" Thank you Lemmy for the many eardrum blowing shows and rocknroll that means a lot to us.
Avatar 1:09pm Chris from DC:

Oh hell yes, I never heard this!
Avatar 1:11pm MenfussMike:

this is the song that lead Fast Eddie to quit
Avatar 1:14pm Cheri Pi:

Do tell uncle MM ?
Avatar 1:16pm MenfussMike:

Eddie despised doing that cover with Wendy O. It resulted in him leaving the band. Apparently he thought it was "too soft".

Driving two hours home (alone) from Indy one night, on CD, I played Ace Of Spades 23 times in a row, just to see if it would hold up. Of course it did. I even waited in the car to listen to the last one of the evening. Astounding rock and roll.

My sister doesn't like "Ace of Spades" because she said she heard it at least three times every time she was at the bar on the jukebox. I thought to myself "That's not so much. Hardly at all. Baby." hahahaha

well, he did show up on tour wearing a sweatband, wristbands, running shorts and Adidas. hahah
Avatar 1:58pm MenfussMike:

it's funny because they kid him about it in the comic strip in the dust sleeve of Another Perfect Day.
Avatar 1:59pm Cheri Pi:

Thanks @Coe!!
Avatar 1:59pm nathaxn walker:

Also, BR wanted to do lots of takes to get his solos right and 'many takes' is not really the Motorhead ethos...
Avatar 2:00pm Cecile:

MM, I also heard that there were just too many drugs in the band for Robertson's liking.

Avatar 2:02pm nathaxn walker:

Cecile - I bet that was totally transporting to see live!
Avatar 2:02pm MenfussMike:

Cecile, possibly but he wasn't necessarily riding the straight and narrow. He probably wore the shorts and non-image friendly attire because he wanted to get kicked out of the band. He did have plans to start a band after he left. and I think Philthy was going with him.
Avatar 2:02pm Chris from DC:

Great picture accompanying "Poison".
Avatar 2:03pm Cecile:

I know Robbo wasn't riding the straight and narrow when I saw him. (*sniff, sniff*)

I call Lemmy's, my husband's and even people like Naked Raygun's interest in war "green army guy politics" - war sucks, but the gear is cool.

Cecile - that is a fine Phil Taylor story! Clearly a night to remember and cherish forever!

Not sure when I first heard Motorhead, but I remember hardcore fanzines writing up Ace of Spades, along the lines of 'these guys are nothing like us, not political, not socially aware, but they rock.'.

Charles Pierce at Esquire's site just posted a political comment that begins, "At the Café, even as we prepare for the big New Year's Rockin' Eve bash, loading up the old jukebox with tunes from Three Dog Night and Hawkwind (in honor of Lemmy), we're still open for business."
