Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, if Quaaludes were a good idea in 1971, then why not today? Ask your pharmacist, I guess.
  3:04pm nEIL cOMMA wILD:

Remember saying "Yeah, if you were ON LUDES it would" or some such thing. A very 80's thing to say...
  3:05pm A.T.F.:

those were the days. still in U.K..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Afternoon, Irwin & all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Rich in Washington:

I miss Quaalude being either the set-up or punchline to risque jokes on TV in the mid/late 70s.
  3:06pm Clay:

Aren't they Mandies in the UK? Ian Hunter was always rambling on about Mandies. Mandrax? Well they call you Prince Charming ... can't speak a word when you're fulla 'ludes (Lynyrd Skynyrd - That Smell)
  3:10pm Listening Out There:

While back, I was readying about Electric Lady Studios. It's supposed to have a creek under it, i.e. it's accessible from the studio...
  3:10pm Listening Out There:

er, "reading" - not "readying." Sigh...
  3:14pm CedarPlanck:

Glorious set thus far ------
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yay for my favorite Courtney Barnett song! Also, yay for Sun Ra and the Arkestra!

Avatar 3:24pm Hoboken Jack:

@Berbo: ha! Would love to see a double bill with Is/Is and I Am the World Trade Center
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Irwin:

And Bokol Haram.
Avatar 3:26pm Polyus:

Is/Is are/were from Minneapolis, though I haven't seen their name around town for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Irwin:

I guess Is/Is were/were but now are/not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Ken From Hyde Park:

How about a double bill of Is/Is and Was Not Was?
  3:29pm A.T.F.:

Is/Is is not politicaly correct ask Jello?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm listener monica:

Irwin, I know (from social media) the drummer from Is/Is! but I had never heard them before! i had to pull over in my car to see who we were listening to! That sounded great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey Irwin, can you use your powers of influence to get someone to remix this? Bran Flakes maybe? www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yay David Liebe Hart! He's my favorite crazy ass Christian ventriloquist except maybe Little Marcy

IS Adam Papagan A puppet?
  3:33pm Alison Porchnik:

This is amazing. Does he have a Lyndon Larouche song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Bronwyn Bishop:

This is kinda Jokerfan-esque
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Rich in Washington:

My friend Toby interviewed Marcy (Little Marcy) Tigner in the 90s. She was a really kind, earnest woman. At the end of the taped interview, she went to her closet to retrieve a dusty Marcy puppet and sang a few songs for Toby's toddler son, who he brought along with him.
  3:34pm Pudge:

Bokol Haram, I got it!
  3:35pm Listening Out There:

Bokol Haram does not equal Procol Harum. I was slow to catch that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Bronwyn Bishop:

M. Ward is definitely the better member of She & Him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm -Ken:

Could you play the Hillary Clinton song again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Irwin:

You're going to air it next, Ken. Guaranteed.
  3:57pm Laura L:

I need to hear the Hillary Clinton song again too--HELP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Irwin:

OK, will re-air in 5pm hour.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Rich in Washington:

What's this background music, Irwin? Is it Jon Hassell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Irwin:

There was some Jon Hassell earlier in the program, not sure about this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Rich in Washington:

the music is already in the Joe Frank pieces?
  4:28pm CP:

Really enjoyed the Joe Frank. Thanks!
  4:30pm CedarPlanck:

sounds like matthew mcconaughey. . . but I am projecting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm chris:

this segment is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The Joe Frank Wiki reveals that the music is "Regiment" with Bryan Eno and David Byrne. www.jfwiki.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm (Eyepatch) Fox:

Is this one of the ones with David Cross?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Rich in Washington:

I caught the Byrne & Eno track. I think the instrumental after was Hassell.
I didn't know the music was in the production. I thought Irwin was mixing it.
Avatar 4:46pm V Priceless:

Hey Irwin! Never heard this JF - great stuff! My first exposure was the "Work In Progress" series on WNYC back around the mid-80's, maybe it was...
  4:50pm Listener Robert:

There really was nothingwrong with Quaaludes. They got taken off the market when their maker was found to be taking into acc't their diversion onto the black market in projecting their sales. Rorer then retroactively withdrew their application to market this drug, which then reverted to "new drug" status (i.e. unapproved). That meant that generic versions of methaqualone resting on same such as Sopor were taken off the market too in the USA. Nobody ever determined the drug to be defective in any way, they were just withdrawn because of their popularity.
  4:53pm Linda Lee:

.. 'the old men engulfed in the twin mounds of her huge buttocks' .. ..
  4:55pm Linda Lee:

.. but did he ever film the piano?
  4:55pm Listener Robert:

Also, keep in mind that the dose used to "abuse" a sleeping pill like that is LOWER than the prescribed dose to put one to sleep. So it's not as if the diversion of the drug to other purposes was endangering people's health.
  4:56pm Linda Lee:

@Listener Robert - it's all about control. not about the drug. never about the drug. not so?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I dig Paul Desmond - sue me...

Avatar 4:59pm dale:

  5:02pm Linda Lee:

loved the Gerry Mulligan / Paul Desmond.. right on time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Parq:

Wait, what did I just read? Joe Frank used to co-anchor the weekend version of All Things Considered? Sorry if I startled you, but that pop you just heard was my head exploding.
  5:06pm CP:

Did he sing with Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Reynolds? Don't pull your love out on me honey, take my heart my soul my money ...
  5:08pm Linda Lee:

love the Daniele Luppi. molto bene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Carmichael:

Due to all the Quay Lude references, Dean, yes. I've seen the Tubes about 15 times, mostly back in the glory days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@CP: ...yes - his tendency to go into existential monologues in the middle of every Pop tune finally forced his bandmates to convince him to go his own way...
  5:10pm ?:

bleegh the hjf&r song 'dont pull your love' has to be one of the worst songs. just thinking about it makes me need a good night's sleep~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm (Eyepatch) Fox:

YAY for Bernie!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Bernie & Paul Desmond have the right dynamic for the New Frontier...
  5:12pm CP:

Avatar 5:13pm Cheyenne:

Irwin, you ARE gonna play the Ben Carson spot too, right?? RIGHT??
  5:14pm Ft. Lee:

Let's hear the Chris Christie song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Carmichael:

Mark Russell is rolling over in his grave. If he's even dead.
  5:14pm Linda Lee:

Up With People!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Irwin:

I don't air political commercials, Cheyenne, only anthems.
Avatar 5:17pm Cheyenne:

FINE. *slinks off to listen to it on my own*
  5:17pm Listener Robert:

I once sang Jim Buckley's US senate campaign "March for America" to Ol' Pal Irwin over the phone as a suggestion to find & play it for his Atrocious Music segment.
Avatar 5:18pm dale:

isn't chris christie's song the macdonald's theme? - grab a bucket an mop.....
  5:19pm Alison Porchnik:

Then play "Jimmy Carter Says Yes." That seems appropriate.
  5:20pm Mark R.:

I'm liking this Troll cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Irwin:

We have 11 months of campaign ahead, AP. Lots of time for political anthems.
  5:21pm Listener Robert:

So I just looked now. Not on SoundCloud, but YouTube has it -- www.youtube.com...
  5:21pm Linda Lee:

love the Troll.
  5:22pm Mark R.:

Time for Tull!
Avatar 5:22pm V Priceless:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Irwin:

Give teh drummer sum!
  5:23pm The Blodwyn Pigg:

For whom the bell TULLS!
  5:23pm Mark R.:

I actually still really love "Stand Up," when they were still a very original, interesting group, and not too pompous and Spinal Tappy yet.
  5:23pm The Blodwyn Pigg:

Go TULL it on the Mountain ... c'mon ... what are some more ... ?
  5:24pm Mark R.:

Don't Tull Your Mother the Babysitter's Dead
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Irwin:

"Tull, There Was You."
  5:24pm The Blodwyn Pigg:

  5:25pm Linda Lee:

go tull it on the mountain.
  5:25pm fred:

that's a Tull glass of water
Avatar 5:26pm Roberto:

I had a friend on my hall in college who was severely into the Tull. He would also severely beat all who dared to question the greatness of the Tull.
  5:26pm fred:

cant wait tull this is over
  5:26pm Listener Robert:

Listening to it now, I realize it was atrocious only when & because I sang it. Interesting that the entire recording makes no audio mention of the candidate. There's a talkover instrumental segment in the middle which presumably is where one would put the pitch for Buckley.
  5:26pm Cat:

Catch Tull at Four
  5:27pm jan:

@Mark and @The Blodwyn Pigg. Tull, Blodwyn Pigg, and Traffic were the bands
that I remember listening to at the same time as the first Zep record, and then it was the Spinal Tap ethos that took over the rock scene. I lost interest.
  5:28pm Edgar Winter:

Derringer, man. Good enough to play on Steely Dan records. .
  5:29pm Marsha:

That's when music got good, Jan! You bailed too soon.
Avatar 5:30pm V Priceless:

It ain't over TULL it's over!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Street musician ! Moynihan makes apparent the connection(s) between Zappa & Jazz. Impressive.
  5:31pm Linda Lee:

truly appreciate the jazz tonight, Irwin. lovely. thank you.
  5:32pm ?:

Heydy! I love that ad. The man in the 'lude ad looks kinda' like Andy Kaufman to me.. I wanna look at more ads like that...
  5:33pm Tony Seymour:

YO IRWIN.....just made it in the pad......having done the Honolulu morning run.....was out at the North Shore the other day......20 foot waves pounding one of the deepest SOUNDS i have ever heard.....like a freight train in the Sea........oh.....i am rambling.......again......as usual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Irwin:

Hey, Tony. Welcome, come on in. Take off yr sandals. Bottles are in the fridge, help yourself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Carmichael:

I think Lude guy looks like Joe Flaherty.
  5:34pm Linda Lee:

@Tony Seymour - good to hear it! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...you know exactly who that Lude casualty is... :
  5:34pm jan:

Nahhh, @Marsha, I got into TSOP and Barry White, Al Greene Isaac Hayes, Bohannan and other less offensive disco intrumentals. Then I can say with some embarrassment that I listened to Vangelis and his ilk. By the late 70s I found 91.1 and Irwin. Most of the other early DJs and programming are gone now.
  5:35pm Marie:

@ Carmichael--I've been watching old SCTV episodes and loving them!
  5:36pm Linda Lee:

@Marie - loved SCTV back in the day! brilliant stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Carmichael:

@Marie: I enjoyed Count Floyd and Sammy Maudlin.
  5:38pm Eleanore:

Teddy Roosevelt: Tully! Tully!
Avatar 5:38pm tonyb:

i'm not good at this...but i think he resembles the vice-president.
  5:39pm Listener Robert:

Marie, you can hear him on an earlier "National Lampoon Radio Hour" LP where he's billed as Joe O'Flaherty. That's where some of the SCTV people came from (Ramis, Flaherty, I forgot who else).
  5:42pm Marie:

@Carmichael--I really like those guys too, as well as Earl Camembert and a ton of others. Sammy Maudlin's hair is amazink!
  5:44pm T-Rump:

Looks a bit like a young Hugh Downs.
  5:45pm Marie:

@Linda and LR: Flaherty's talent grew on me more slowly. I have been watching box sets of the old seasons before I go to sleep a lot lately. It is a great way to end the day and then I think of some of the funnier stuff the next day--comedy sprinkles.
  5:45pm Tony Seymour:

Stina sounds like an angelic hummingbird.....
  5:46pm Linda Lee:

@Marie - show was on late as i recall, so it had the same effect on me!
  5:46pm Otterpop:

Stina's voice is cloying somehow. Ramping up the waif. I hear spit.
  5:48pm Marie:

@LL--neato! :>)
  5:48pm Linda Lee:

i loved the schmengie brothers & the great white north. but it was all really fine. never a dull moment.
  5:48pm Olath, Kansas:

This Lucius sounds like Kate Bush.
  5:49pm audiocloth:

irwin you really turn it up after joe frank!
  5:49pm Otterpop:

I retract my mean comments about Stina. I am just constipated and crabby today. I need 200% bran.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yeah suddenly hearing the Kate influence often enuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm chris:

weird production in that Lucius track... interesting.
  5:51pm Linda Lee:

@Otterpop - aloe vera gel will do it like nothing else will.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Irwin:

I heard hints of Abba too.
  5:51pm Marie:

Then there was Sid Dithers...
Avatar 5:53pm V Priceless:

cool show, Irwin - thanks!
  5:54pm Listener Robert:

I was very disappointed when Harold Ramis left SCTV, but overall the show's quality didn't suffer in his absence. Ken Freedman resembled him in my mind, partly because of voice & looks, but partly because Ramis played SCTV's station mgr., albeit using a character, Moe Green, that he'd developed earlier & elsewhere.
Avatar 5:54pm Rebecca Lewis:

I'm really enjoying the show. I'm going to have to get this song.
  5:55pm Linda Lee:

@Marie -frankly, i thought the women were the true gems. brilliantly funny every time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Stanley:

Mmm....time for my quaaludes
  5:59pm Clay:

Great show Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm chris:

thanks, Irwin!
  6:00pm Listening Out There:

Thanks 'gain!
  6:00pm Listener Robert:

O'Hara & Martin were indeed a riot. You wouldn't necessarily know it from the writing credits because they developed a lot of their stuff via improve.
  6:02pm Linda Lee:

quick on the draw!
