Howdy, Peter and all! This member of the peanut gallery present and accounted for.
Avatar 3:02pm Sarah N:

Welcome fellow nutter!
Avatar 3:04pm Peter Nelson:

Howdy James
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm JtotheK:

the pricing from this vendor is quite reasonable!
Avatar 3:05pm Peter Nelson:

Hi JtotheK. Cheap nuts. Hot!
  3:06pm Ryan:

Hi Peter the Wind tonight here in Britain is Nuts!
Avatar 3:07pm Peter Nelson:

Hi Ryan. Yup. Same here down south. The gods are farty.
Avatar 3:07pm Sarah N:

Hi JtotheKnut. Hello Ryanut. Yep, sure is windy!
Avatar 3:12pm Sarah N:

That is some funky hammond work!
Avatar 3:13pm Sarah N:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm doctorjazz:

Salt peanuts, anyone?
Avatar 3:19pm Sarah N:

Yes please doctorjazznut!
Avatar 3:19pm Peter Nelson:

Hi DoctorJ. Plenty nuts here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm fleep:

First class seat with plenty of legume.
Avatar 3:20pm Sarah N:

Avatar 3:21pm Peter Nelson:

Hi fleep. Finroom?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm fleep:

Just Jiffy, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm listener james from westwood:

I JUST noticed I am eating peanut butter out of the jar. I blame our host. Send jam!
Avatar 3:25pm Sarah N:

Crunchy or smooth James?
  3:27pm MrFab:

hey Peter!
I have some albums by the Peanuts. Unfortunately, they don't contain any of their Mothra songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Rich in Washington:

But do they contain peanuts?
Avatar 3:30pm Peter Nelson:

Hi Mr Fab. Do you have 'Feelin Good:New Dimensions Of the Peanuts'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm listener james from westwood:

@Sarah: Crunchy!
Avatar 3:31pm Peter Nelson:

Hey Rich in W. Welcome.
  3:34pm MrFab:

Don't remember the album names. I am at work, far from my record closet.
in the '90s I would record the Peanuts off of Mothra movies when they would come on tv. (Gawd, that sounds weird...)
  3:34pm Ike:

I almost butt-commented a blank comment as "IIkexccx zzzxxxzse".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm fleep:

Is a butt comment akin to talking out of your ...?
Avatar 3:36pm Peter Nelson:

Hi Ike. Hi Ike's butt.
  3:38pm Dean:

My favorite word in, perhaps, the world is Spanish for "peanuts."
Avatar 3:38pm Sarah N:

Hey Deanut!
Avatar 3:39pm Peter Nelson:

Hello Dean. Which is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm listener james from westwood:

A zillion years ago, some inspired FMU DJ played a hip hop cut that used a scratched sample of Charlie Brown's "I got a rock" throughout, making it sound like "I gotta rock." Brilliant.
Avatar 3:40pm DeemerDave:

Peter: If you feel it fits your show, The Police recorded "Peanuts" on "Outlandos d'Amour"
  3:40pm Dean:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm JtotheK:

@listener james -- that's from a Kid Koala mix...either on the Emperor Main Course in Cantonese EP, or the Scratchscratchscratch mixtape... it's wonderful!
Avatar 3:41pm Sarah N:

Same as French then - cacahuète (pronounced cackawet). Love it! German's cool too - Erdnuss.
Avatar 3:42pm Peter Nelson:

Earth nuts!
Avatar 3:44pm Sarah N:

  3:44pm Dean:

Whenever I pass a Walnut St. in Anytown, USA, I am compelled to pronounce it VAHL-noose.

My kids gotta hear this rendition of the Thomas the Tank Engine tune.
Avatar 3:44pm Parq:

Um, yeah.
Avatar 3:45pm Parq:

Thomas the Tank engine music underlying it; nice touch.
Avatar 3:45pm Peter Nelson:

Yeah, Parq, yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm listener james from westwood:

That easily could've been on one of the comps Tony just played!
Avatar 3:47pm Sarah N:

@Dean - one should never pass up an opportunity to say VAHL-noose!
Avatar 3:48pm Peter Nelson:

Did you know the name 'Walnut' comes form the Saxon word for foreign?
Avatar 3:51pm Parq:

I was waiting for "Peanut Vendor" -- the Don Azpiazú recording was one of the first Latin-based hits in the United States. This is as good a time as any to plug the book from which I learned that, a book that any Giver the Drummer stalwart will devour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Rich in Washington:

now I'm thinking about the 'stop naming nuts' scene from Best In Show.
  3:52pm Dean:

The enduring metal band Saxon, or some other one? Did not know that. OED adds: "The solitary Old English example (in a glossary c1050) is the earliest known appearance of the word in any language. The word must, however, have come to England from the Continent, but there is no evidence to show whether it belonged to the primitive Old English vocabulary, or was introduced at a relatively late date. It seems to have belonged originally to the Low German-speaking district; etymologically it meant the nut of the Roman lands (Gaul and Italy) as distinguished from the native hazel."
Avatar 3:53pm Parq:

That's it -- I'm changing the name of my autobiography to "Stop Naming Nuts".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Rich in Washington:

Now I'm thinking about the 'peanut butter' quote from Shakes the Clown.
Avatar 3:56pm Sarah N:

I've not seen that film Rich - must check it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Rich in Washington:

Oh. my. GAWD!
Avatar 3:56pm Peter Nelson:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Rich in Washington:

I literally cannot believe this exists! My mind is breaking, Peter!
I can feel it!
  3:57pm Dean:

Bit of trivia: the first King Crimson album was originally going to be titled PB&J.
Avatar 3:58pm Peter Nelson:

I know, I know. Strange world.
Avatar 3:58pm Peter Nelson:

@Dean. Really? Strange world.
Avatar 3:59pm Sarah N:

This really is the nuts.
  4:00pm Dean:

Yep. And Fripp wanted each of the band members to assume pseudonyms: Jiff, Skippy, etc. I'm reading Bill Bruford's autobiography. I know this stuff.
  4:07pm MrFab:

Ha. And Barbra Streisand covered "21st century Schizoid Man."
Avatar 4:08pm Peter Nelson:

@Fab. Mechastreisand.
Avatar 4:08pm Peter Nelson:

I'm very keen on Fripp's ambient collars with Eno.
Avatar 4:09pm Peter Nelson:

colabs....not collars....
Avatar 4:11pm Sarah N:

I love the idea of an ambient collar!! Perhaps it keeps dog fleas at bay.....

Incidentally, as fleep referred to earlier....the peanut is not actually is nut at all, but a legume. I have no idea what to think about that, but just had to share.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Rich in Washington:

Mr. Fab? Babs? Really?
I have her Bowie/Life on Mars cover. Didn't know she slaugh... er, covered Crimson!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Rich in Washington:

Doc Severinsen covered Court of the Crimson King.
Avatar 4:12pm Peter Nelson:

New from Ronco! Ambient collars. Only 9.99.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Rich in Washington:

Eno got the idea for ambient collars when he was convalescing from a broken collarbone and couldn't get up to turn his collar down.
Avatar 4:15pm Sarah N:

Did his collar go up to eleven?
  4:15pm MrFab:

I was kidding Rich, but yeah I have that Doc album, forgot about that. Almost as weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm fleep:

More than interesting? Count me in!
Avatar 4:21pm Sarah N:

This show is ACE! With hilarious comments to boot. Whoo hoo, you guys all totally rock!
Avatar 4:24pm Parq:

Missus N, I blush on everybody's behalf.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm JtotheK:

@rich re: shakes the clown ... brown, smooth, easy to spread!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Rich in Washington:

Damn, Mr. Fab! I really wanted to hear that. Maybe someone can make it happen via the magic of mashups...
Avatar 4:39pm Peter Nelson:

Me too. Another show theme, maybe? Crimson covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm fleep:

Early mascot for Jif? Kangaroo. c2.staticflickr.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Jimmy Carter:

I am LOVING this show.
Avatar 4:57pm Sarah N:

Hey Dougnut, peanut researcher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Mike East:

sent a guy out to get me a coffee and an reeses peanut butter cup...feeling inspired by this show...and also tired from working.
Avatar 4:59pm Peter Nelson:

Hey Mike!
5:01pm Charles M. Schulkind, er, Schulz:

I am LOVING this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Charles Schulz:

I am LOVING this show.
  5:03pm The Mayor of Pittsburg:

I am LOVING Doug's comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Doug Schulkind:

Surprise! It was me all along. I am LOVING this show!
Avatar 5:04pm Peter Nelson:

Er...could you be a bit clearer Doug?
  5:04pm Listener Robert:

This is my 1st time listening (got in about a minute after scheduled start), was very pleased. Glad that even though this stream's DJd schedule has been filling in, there's still enough slack for this little extra here.
Avatar 5:05pm Peter Nelson:

Hi Listener Robert
Avatar 5:06pm Parq:

This show is P-Nutty delicious, but I gotta go. Nuts to all of you. In a good way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Doug Schulkind:

I hope there's no one out there with a fantastic music allergy. The stream could get sued.
Avatar 5:06pm Sarah N:

Bye P-arq! It was fun.
Avatar 5:06pm Peter Nelson:

So long Parq.
Avatar 5:07pm Peter Nelson:

Last Peanut tune coming up. Guess what?
Avatar 5:07pm Sarah N:

WARNING: this show may contain nuts!
Avatar 5:08pm Peter Nelson:

Such banal lyrics, but what a groove.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of loving, the Drummer Stream has two more live programs coming right up:

GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME — live from Pittsburgh, PA

KAMINSKY KAMOUTSKY — live from Jamaica Plain, MA

Smooth AND crunchy all at once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of Gottschalk, Kurt Gottschalk of WFMU's Miniature Minotaurs will be filling in for Matt Fiveash on Thanksgiving Day here on the Drummer Stream. And with an extra hour, 2-5pm!
Avatar 5:13pm Sarah N:

Any relation I wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Doug Schulkind:

@Sarah N
If this Facebook post is to be believed, no: www.facebook.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm listener james from westwood:

The Sixth always reminds me of the "Simpsons" parody of "Fantasia," where the kids, having all stopped watching cartoons, wander outside, blinking at the sun, and begin actually playing, skipping rope, painting fences, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Blinking In The Sun — another great radio show name.
Avatar 5:26pm Peter Nelson:

Yeah James...it's remarkably evocative, even after 2 centuries.
  5:26pm Listener Robert:

Sound track will do that to you. No matter how you may have known a musical piece before, you can't help associating it with a memorable visual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm listener james from westwood:

@Doug: An ironic one for an overnight shift!
  5:27pm Ryan:

Thanks for the Peanuts Peter!
Avatar 5:29pm Peter Nelson:

Thank you for listening, Ryan.
  5:30pm Listener Robert:

For instance, "Joy To The World" always evokes to me the closing scene of "The President's Analyst". "Dancing Queen" -- closing scene of "Dick".
  5:30pm Listener Robert:

Beethoven's 9th -- Huntley & Brinkley.
Avatar 5:32pm Peter Nelson:

To Brits...Dvorjak New World Symph and Hovis bread.
  5:32pm Listener Robert:

Hmm...the effect seems to be particularly strong for closings, given my examples.
  5:36pm Dean:

For beginnings, then, the last movement of the finale of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite was for a time the introductory music at Yes concerts.
  5:36pm Dean:

And this sextet arrangement is really lovely.
  5:37pm Dean:

"last movement of the finale" redundantly repeats what I already said again.
Avatar 5:43pm Peter Nelson:

Yeah Dean...so many of us were introduced to Stravinsky by Yes. I have a wonderful performance of The Firebird by Les Ciecle, which I intend to play some time. A reconstruction of the first performance.
Avatar 5:45pm Peter Nelson:

Sorry, that should be 'Les Siecle'.
  5:46pm Listener Robert:

Good thing I had other visuals from Beethoven in my mind before I eventually saw "A Clockwork Orange"!
Avatar 5:46pm Peter Nelson:

Stravinsky tinkered with it a lot, so the 1st performance thing is valid...sounds quite different.
  5:48pm Dean:

Would love to hear the Siecles. There's also Richter's famous Sofia performance of the piano transcription of the suite.

If Kubrick knew anything, he knew how to combine music and visuals. The soundtrack to Clockwork Orange is hella fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Gary:

Just back from work; can't wait to dig into this one in the archives!
Avatar 5:50pm Peter Nelson:

@Dean. There's a piano transcription of The Firebird? By 'eck, I'd love to hear that!

And yeah to what you say about Kubrick. Totally agree. A Master.
  5:50pm Dean:

Oops. Richter played Mussourgsky's "Pictures," not Stravinsky! Duh.
Avatar 5:51pm Peter Nelson:

Hi Gary. This show was inspired by you...your show last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Gary:

Also, holy crap, that's a lotta peanuts!
Avatar 5:52pm Peter Nelson:

A sack full.
Avatar 5:52pm Peter Nelson:

Doh Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Doug Schulkind:

Songs for Paris, next, on Give the Drummer Some: wfmu.org...
Avatar 5:56pm Peter Nelson:

Texas? Plaster of?
  5:56pm Dean:

I don't know this recording, but I have others by Idel Biret, and I bet this is at least good, maybe fantastic: http://www.amazon.com/Stravinsky-Firebird-The-Piano-Transcription/dp/B000QQQQ5Q
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Gary:

I purposely did NOT listen to any more of the Peanuts DL, so I could hear them here first ... :)
  5:56pm Listener Robert:

I'm especially drawn to ironic musical-visual juxtapositions.
  5:58pm Listener Robert:

Sorry, Doug, but I'm switching over to Bronwyn, unless she's still away. I've dug every talk format she's had. I love her laugh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Peter!
  5:59pm Dean:

By "others by Idil Biret," I mean recordings of other pieces, of course.
