Great show Todd o phonic Todd sitting here enjoying the music scratching my belly and drinking beer
Avatar 4:22pm David Shortell:

All this Hell music reminds me of years ago when my workplace closed for the week of Christmas. Come the new year, I returned to find that the cleaners had taken my cassette player.
They were welcome to it, but couldn't they at least have removed and left behind the ROIR "Fun Hunt" tape? I never did replace it.
Avatar 4:30pm Cheri Pi:

Spot on quote, still see this today ToT & RH, same ambivalent feeling I get too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Stevel:

Not to be pedantic, but I feel Richard Hell is up there with the greats, in regards to his skills as a story teller. His use of the language is stunning and very fucking accurate.

Thank you, Todd and Richard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(..always associated Punk w/ Dada - which wasn't a specific aesthetic either...)
Avatar 4:37pm Cheri Pi:

The Eagles :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Stevel:

Hair style defines commitment.

I grew up on top 40 radio. Differences in styles in the late 70s was fascinating. I grew to like the Talking Head and The Clash, even though when I bought thier albums, I was looking for somrthing else. It was challenging and really fucking interesting. Having made the commitment to the vinyl, I'd listen to them all, even if I was lukewarm to the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Stevel:

Cheri Pi: Missed the Eagles reference, but I usually frown when they are mentioned.
Avatar 4:48pm Cheri Pi:

Dammit he is so thoughtful and profound
Avatar 4:49pm Lopez:

Great interview
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Stevel:

The writing has let me get to know Mr. Hell a little bit better. He's not just a caricature performing. We have some insight into who is was and--perhaps more importantly, in a weird way--who he became.
Avatar 4:50pm Cheri Pi:

Steve They weren't mentioned by name, only referenced in the general sense of the death of rocknroll via corporate influences, proggy Southern rock overkill

  4:53pm Ice in Bklyn:

Love this Quine quote: I think Blank Generation holds up pretty well. You listen to that with headphones and there's a lot going on there with the guitars-it's the product of a lot of fighting.
Avatar 4:53pm David Shortell:

At a Red Bank party a decade ago, a spikey-haired youngster asked the host what band he was playing (it was a song off "Blank Generation").
After he left the room I remarked to one of my generational peers, "Isn't it ironic that this kid who never heard of the Voidoids is sporting a hairstyle that Richard Hell invented?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Stevel:

Ice: Great quote!
  5:00pm Ice in Bklyn:

Pretty funny Shortell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm common:

man i love your style of interview, todd this is great
Avatar 5:01pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm patrick321:

Pretty sure Anthony Hopkins was in that film with Jessica Lange.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Stevel:

Common, and Todd. Truly. Great job.
Avatar 5:06pm Cheri Pi:

13 Assassins by Miike did that for me and I abhor violence in film
  5:07pm Ice in Bklyn:

Yes. I usually don't comment this much, but T-o-T makes the weekend better. Thanks..
Avatar 5:13pm Cheri Pi:

Fantastic piece ToT!!!!
  5:14pm muzz e.v.:

Great interview. Thanks! Looking forward to the new book!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Great combo of Interviewee & Interviewer. Hurrah.
Re Punk being like Blues - that is exactly what Iggy said about his earliest intentions too: he realized (in Detroit, that close to Chicago) that the Blues had been Mastered by venerable old African-Americans - & he'd need to find his own young White suburban version of it...a problem Beefheart & many others of course set about addressing...& Lennon of course remarking that Blues is - a Chair to *Sit In* - not a *design* for a better chair...
  5:15pm mister-c:

Wow, R H was much more articulate than
those times I met him in the 70's and 80's
when he was acting like a selfish junkie asshole. Unexpected pleasant surprise.
Strand Bookstore on Wednesday ? Hmmm
Avatar 5:16pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Glad you guys enjoyed the interview!
Avatar 5:16pm Listener Jumpy:

Funny to have read the Richard Hell autobiography back to back with the Alex Chilton bio, as they have a crossover mentioned in both! Nice interview.
Avatar 5:19pm Hoboken Jack:

Enjoyed the "hell" out of that, thank you!
Avatar 5:19pm David Shortell:

Titus Andronicus rehashed the myth of Philomela --whose tongue rapists removed to cover their tracks, only to be incriminated when Philomela wove a tapestry that depicted their heinous acts. Shakespeare went further by having the rapists cut off her hands as well.
The Philomela myth was reused again in the Ellen James charcter from "The World According to Garp".
Avatar 5:26pm Listener Jumpy:

There's Chilton!
Avatar 5:27pm Listener Jumpy:

The Chilton bio is highly recommended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Stevel:

What's the name of the Chilton bio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm efd:

wow, great Paper Lace song!
Avatar 5:29pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@efd: Crap, I almost added you to the dedication!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Stevel:

David Shortell: Cool summary. Now I want to see TA. Always been a bit shy, given the said intensity of content.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm efd:

well it's the thought that counts.
  5:31pm AS from MP:

Todd: I think that your interview style is outstanding, and as I have noticed at times with M Shelley, too, you catch your subjects off guard because you are clearly so well versed in the topic and the individual - they do not expect you to be as focused and connected with them, or to have done your research so well. Keep it coming
Avatar 5:37pm DonJuanTijuana:

The Todd-o-phonic show must be THEE best of all current FMU shows.
Avatar 5:38pm Listener Jumpy:

The Chilton bio is called A MAN CALLED DESTRUCTION, same as his album.
Avatar 5:40pm Sean B.:

Unbelievable Todd. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm efd:

thanks for the shout-out, Todd! Outstanding interview and show today, as usual.

This show is why i listen to this station. Always very good Todd.
  8:24am Brad:

The glorious "Rebels Rule" by Iron Virgin was ripped off as California Paradise by the Runaways on the Queens of Noise LP.
