  9:31am Bob Koski from Detroit:

Thank you David for the shout-out of CKLW-AM 800 "The Big 8". It was the best station; played such a wide range of music (pop, rock, R&B, Motown, even novelty records). The Canadian Content Laws killed that great station (long story). A Documentary called "The Rise & Fall of The Big 8" exists, it's fantastic. Love your show, Bob.
  9:37am ?:

Heh...Canadian content...I remember when they IDd as "CKLW, the Motor City" to hide their Canadianity.
  9:38am Robert:

Sorry, "?" was me, still waking up.
Avatar 9:40am Sem Chumbo:

HaHaa. Canadianity. God, you can do anything in English:-)
  9:46am Bob from Detroit:

Yeah, that was CKLW's jingle. True, the station knew what side their bread was buttered on, but that Windsor/Detroit station broke open The Guess Who and other Canadian artists. The CRTC (Canada's "FCC") put the kibosh on the "American influence" on Canadian stations, which was nonsense.

Arthur Askey?

End of the pier pointlessness.

  10:02am Elias:

Ah, CKLW. My brother and I always thought it so cool that we could hear a Canadian station in Cleveland. When we drove to Hamilton to visit Baba and Dido (gettin ethnic here) we would insist that my parents tuned the radio thusly in the car. The magic of AM radio. I still tune into 1100 out of Cleveland here in NYC to listen to my sportsy teams.
Avatar 10:03am Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Brian. Sorry to have missed you earlier.
You know what Sartre said: Hell is others, at breakfast.
  10:10am Bob from Detroit:

Yeah, Elias...great memories. CKLW's strong AM signal had such a reach, it had many listeners all over the U.S & Canada. Once, I picked up the station 600 miles away in Houghton/Hancock in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Can't do that with FM.
Avatar 10:14am Brian in UK:

Sem Talking of Sartre, ever seen or read?

Love Boris Vian.
Avatar 10:20am Sem Chumbo:

Neither, Brian. The film looks appealing, and
"Chick, Alise, Chloe and Colin spend their time saying funny things, listening to Duke Ellington and skating.", has me looking now for the English translation. Thanks for the links/tips.
Avatar 10:22am Sem Chumbo:

Ah, I see the connection now. This has gone from appealing to fascinating.
  10:24am Elias:

AM radio is the bestest. With all the expensive sports packages that abound these days I get to feel like I'm "sticking it to the man" when I listen to Cavs basketball on the radio (at night of course) hundreds of miles from the shores of Lake Erie.
Avatar 10:26am fred:

I saw a working pianocktail once, years ago. All I remember is that Orchestre Tout-Puissant Marcel Duchamp were playing that night, but I don't know whether they were involved. I think the Swiss collective Cave12 were in charge of the event
  10:30am William:

Wonderful show so far.
Avatar 10:31am fred:

Shoukichi Kina is/are from Okinawa, right? I'm a sucker for that music
Avatar 10:32am Brian in UK:

@fred sounds good, could drink one now. There is a Centre Boris Vian near Paris I believe.
Avatar 10:39am fred:

@Brian: could be, though it might be hard to find out where: there are so many schools and places named after him
