Avatar 10:03pm Droll:

DM, He just called you funkydog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm mariano:

Hey y'all! Don't I know y'all from a previous playlist or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm pacific standard simon:

I still haven't listened to Irwin's Harry Partch show, but it's a priority, when I'm not cooking or watching a movie.
  10:04pm HollyT:

Evening, D!
Avatar 10:04pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I can deal with that.
Avatar 10:04pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Holly, pss, mariano, Droll, ccrides, 12539.
  10:06pm ccrides:

Remember...if you are somewhere else...ya gotta click twice!!!...:)O(:...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Ike:

Hey there everybody. Hey Mariano, thanks again for making me spin like this. It's a wonder I haven't gotten dizzy yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, I didn't call him "dogfunk"! Or "late for dinner".
Avatar 10:10pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Ike.
Avatar 10:10pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: "Late for dinner" would be the worst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm mariano:

Hey Ike: yeah, I see -- glad it worked out! Great story about the supermarket too, last show!
  10:14pm ccrides:

I came here for 'one' reason...some'body' needs to play 'Baker Street Muse'..!..by Jethro Tull...the full studio version...thank you!!!...:)O(:..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm pacific standard simon:

Tonight, D. Mandl serves up a dish called "la pizza de réglisse"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm fleep:

I'm here for no reason.
Avatar 10:17pm Dave Mandl:

@ccrides: All 15 minutes of it? Hmmm...not tonight, I don't think. Though I could probably sing it from memory.
  10:17pm ccrides:

Fleep...I gave 'it' my best shot!!!...:)O(:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm pacific standard simon:

It's the age of reason.
Avatar 10:17pm Dave Mandl:

Hey fleep.
@Droll: Something in 7 for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm pacific standard simon:

Something in 7/4?
Avatar 10:18pm Dave Mandl:

You're soaking in it.
Avatar 10:19pm Dave Mandl:

Or 7/8. Same thing.
  10:19pm ccrides:

It's OK Dave...I'm probably living in the past, anyway!!!...hehehe...:)O(:..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm mariano:

It *is* 7/4, isn't it? You just made me tap it out, and by gum, it works!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm pacific standard simon:

A delightful first set.
  10:22pm Mdurek:

Nice opener !
Avatar 10:22pm Droll:

You guys started talking about dinner and I got hungry. Or I was already hungry. Or both. I can hear you from the kitchen, and I'm slicing in 7.
  10:23pm ccrides:

BTW...Baker Street Muse isn't available on Pop Up...in case y'all didn't know???...)O(..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm pacific standard simon:

The wife is cooking pot roast; I'm roasting beets and onions in port and orange.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm mariano:

Oh... wow. Pot roast and port, three of my favorite things! ;)
Avatar 10:25pm Droll:

Back when Mandl's show was three hours, the dinner interruption didn't cost half the show.
...but, this song goes to eleven.
Avatar 10:25pm Dave Mandl:

@mariano: I wouldn't steer your wrong.
Avatar 10:26pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Hahahaha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm pacific standard simon:

@mariano - baked and roasted at the same time, eh?
  10:27pm Mdurek:

Sick programming.
Avatar 10:28pm Dave Mandl:

Evening, @Mdurek. Thanks.
Avatar 10:28pm Droll:

I like these glitchy drum parts that seem to float over/around the song like reggae drum parts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm mariano:

Indeed, Simon! And it reminds me that I need to make a nice pot roast some time soon, it's been too long. Only problem is I'm liable to eat the whole damn thing in less than a day.
  10:29pm ccrides:

I am a carpenter...and I 'do' love a certain Lady!!!...:)O(:..
  10:30pm Mdurek:

@droll. Right? Kinda appreciate keeping the guitar really simple and then just making many varied fills. WIN
Swag For Life Member 10:31pm 12539:

Lovely birds.
  10:32pm Carmichael:

Sunday in California. Bbq beast and IPA. Ola señor Echo and friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm pacific standard simon:

When I play music at work with animal sounds, it always makes co-workers smile. Curious.
Avatar 10:33pm Dave Mandl:

Let's see if you can identify the (male) singer in the next song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm mariano:

Roasts, bbqs... this is no fair. I'm staring at a boiled egg. Must go procure snacks.
  10:35pm Mdurek:

If any of you liked those bird sounds and use ableton my buddy subaqueous has an awesome free live rack called out a bird on it :) http://subaqueousmusic.com/production-articles/free-music-tools/224-bird-found-sounds-and-texture
Swag For Life Member 10:35pm 12539:

I know this one, I'm disqualified.
Avatar 10:36pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: That's very honest of you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm pacific standard simon:

I dunno -- Peter Gabriel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm mariano:

Aw, shazbot! I know this voice, I think, and now I have to run out for a bit. Suspense!
Avatar 10:36pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Very close.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm pacific standard simon:

  10:37pm ScottC:

almost sounds like Sandy Denny but I know it's not...
Swag For Life Member 10:38pm 12539:

I always loved the armored goose on the back cover.
  10:38pm ccrides:

About birds...)O(

Avatar 10:39pm Dave Mandl:

Viv McCauliffe and Phil Collins.
  10:39pm Carmichael:

Dave Cousins?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm pacific standard simon:

The "very close" was a dead giveaway, folks.
Avatar 10:40pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: It was.
Avatar 10:40pm Droll:

The vox so high sounded like Robert Wyatt, but the guitar sounds like Steve Hackett immediately. By the end it did sound like Phil, but very high. I'm already too embarrassed to Google it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm fleep:

Googled it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm pacific standard simon:

It would be interesting to do a whole show of songs with hard-to-guess (or Google) mystery vocalists, and challenge listeners to see how many they could identify. With prizes!
  10:48pm Mdurek:

@pss also won of crappy live performances from normally tight bands.
  10:49pm ccrides:

I like prizes!!!...hehehe...:)O(:..
  10:50pm ccrides:

I always liked green stamps too!!!...hehehe...:)O(:..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm pacific standard simon:

@Mdurek - you anticipated what I was typing! Maybe live Beatle songs where, say, George was singing what John sang originally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm pacific standard simon:

My first set of bongos was bought with Blue Chip Stamps!
  10:51pm ccrides:

John was the 'greatest'!!!...:)O(:..
  10:52pm Mdurek:

@pss yes!! Some csny ones are shocking too. Stoked for cibi matto. Sci if wasabi was my jam on Now 2 comp
  10:54pm ccrides:

A little boy sat on a burning log..!..etc...:)O(:..
  10:55pm pollen:

Avatar 10:56pm Dave Mandl:

See playlist...
Avatar 10:56pm Dave Mandl:

(It was the Grateful Dead.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm pacific standard simon:

Past my deadtime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm pacific standard simon:

That is to say, post-'74.
Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Ralphine:

I just discovered a couple of days ago that a bunch, maybe all, of the Dick's Picks albums are on Spotify.
  11:03pm Mdurek:

Man remind me to favorite this track in the comp. such a trip
  11:04pm ccrides:

Last time I checked...mmmm...WFMU didn't have a clean version of 'Cold Wind to Valhallah(sp), either???...:)O(:..
  11:04pm Mdurek:

I wonder if this is a tongue drum
  11:09pm ccrides:

Actually, y'all are really behind on Ian and the boyz!!!...:)O(:
Avatar 11:09pm Droll:

That was the Dead?! Why do people listen to all that noodling instead of this? I shouldn't be surprised, any band that spends that much time playing eventually learns to play. Indeed, that's what killed punk.
Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Ralphine:

Some people don't know about this. Some people like all that noodling better than they like this.
  11:12pm HollyT:

Happy birthday tomorrow, DM! :)
Avatar 11:13pm Dave Mandl:

Aw, thanks, Holly.
  11:13pm ccrides:

It don't beat All Blues!!!...:)O(:..
  11:14pm Mdurek:

One of my favorite dead tracks was terrapin station. Nicely produced and sculpted. Jerry's noodling was next level though imho. Motives upon motives and themes upon themes. Moslty on the spot.
Avatar 11:15pm Droll:

Happy B-day DM! Add a birthday cupcake to the list of things I owe you.
  11:16pm Mdurek:

Totally didn't expect them to brand that as the dead though. Haha. Shoulda made another side project.
Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Ralphine:

Terrapin Station was the song that led me to Dick's Picks on Spotify.
Avatar 11:16pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Thanks. You don't owe me nothin'.
  11:16pm Mdurek:

And many more Dave!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm pacific standard simon:

Me, my favorite Dead show was the benefit they did for Ken Kesey's brother's Oregon dairy farm about '73. Other than that, things here and there. The version of "Bertha" on the "Skull And Roses" album. Various live versions of "China Cat Sunflower".
Avatar 11:17pm Dave Mandl:

@Mdurek: Gracias.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm pacific standard simon:

And also, best birthday wishes, Dave. If RRabbitN63 were here, he would probably add his Aries-related comments.
  11:19pm Mdurek:

@pss will have to check that! @droll have you heard terrapin? You might dig if less noodling is your taste.
Avatar 11:19pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Thanks!
  11:19pm ccrides:

In my opinion...Miles and his crazy wife went crazy shortly after this shiaaitt...the boy shoulld have listened to his mother!!!...hehehe...:)O(:..
Avatar 11:20pm Droll:

My favorite dead show was Deer Creek sometime around 89-90. The guy next to me explained how Jerry had only worn those black short at two other shows: Vermont and North Carolina. Some dude was swimming through the audience at incredible speed but somehow it just worked. Balloons were $5, tix were easy to find, I didn't lose my shoes in the parking lot, etc... Good show.
  11:20pm Mdurek:

@ ralphine yet another thing to check. :) so much great art in the World
Avatar 11:22pm Droll:

But Psychic TV in '90 was like every Dead show I ever attended summed together and times 1,000.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm pacific standard simon:

Balloons! **giggle**
  11:23pm Mdurek:

@droll wish I saw them. Esp in their prime.
  11:23pm P-90:

Oh, buon compleanno, Dave! I was late to the party this evening, I didn't know.
Coming up fast on the big three-oh? It's not as rough as it seems, trust me
Avatar 11:25pm Dave Mandl:

@P-90: Thanks. Yeah, I'll miss my 20's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm pacific standard simon:

  11:26pm ccrides:

The Dead were never alive, in the first place..!..get over 'it'!!!...:)O(:..
Avatar 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Not quite.
Avatar 11:28pm Droll:

ccrides, I totally agree -- the Dead were noodlers. Phish could really play. They generally noodled, but one only need watch their performance of Watcher of the Skies from Genesis' RRHF induction to see they have The Goods.
  11:30pm Mdurek:

Great show thanks Dave ! Thanks all good interesting opinions and suggestions.
Swag For Life Member 11:30pm Ralphine:

To each his own. I never liked Phish.
  11:31pm ccrides:

I must say that I did like 'The Grateful Dead Movie'..!..Very Groovy!!!!...:)O(:..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm pacific standard simon:

@DaveM - not quite, either -- but close!
Avatar 11:37pm Droll:

. o O ( Columbia Legacy is now doing bootlegs? [CD case shuffling, half off-mic] I think not. )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm pacific standard simon:

I used to like Therese, before the very mention of her show reminded me that World Of Echo was ending soon.
Avatar 11:38pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Impressive transcription!
Avatar 11:38pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Oh, now.
  11:38pm P-90:

Good point, they're chasing a little outlaw cred vibe with that "Bootleg Series" bullshit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm pacific standard simon:

I know.
  11:39pm ccrides:

Dave...Are you tripping, or something???...hehehe...:)O(:..
Avatar 11:40pm Dave Mandl:

@ccrides: As a matter of fact, I am.
  11:45pm an older lover etc:

Whoa, this is nice
  11:49pm HollyT:

oh, yay. I LOVE Dorothy Ashby!
Avatar 11:50pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: Yeah, this is really beautiful. Jazz meets Tiki.
  11:51pm P-90:

Whooooee, Gene Russell & Co. really nailed that last one!
  11:53pm ccrides:

Well...the better to love yourself!!!...Cheerz buddy!!...:)O(:..
  11:53pm P-90:

Lalo! My man
Avatar 11:54pm Dave Mandl:

Dirty Harry! My Man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm pacific standard simon:

WFMU needs an all-jazz show. That isn't afraid of non-out, I mean. No disrespect to the Jeffs intended, but...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm mariano:

Dammit, the Dead! I was wrong, and I got waylaid on the way back by this bar, which has strong gravitational powers.
Avatar 11:56pm Droll:

Thanks Prof. Mandl. Can you remind me when the 3-hour show starts again?
Avatar 11:56pm earrie:

What's a 'non-out'?
  11:56pm JakeGould:

Lalo! Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm fleep:

This show is one of my favorite things. Thanks, Dave Mandl.
Swag For Life Member 11:57pm 12539:

Happy birthday, Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm pacific standard simon:

Non-out jazz? Pre-be-bop.
  11:58pm P-90:

@. Dave: often those "arbitrary names" on soundtrack albums come from the names used by the composer for the original cues, not always slapped on by the label
Avatar 11:58pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks! And thanks everyone. Have a great week.
  11:58pm ccrides:

But you're wrong, Steve, 'it's only solitare!!!...:)O(:..
  11:59pm P-90:

Another home run tonight! - thanks and many happy returns Dave
  5:27am steve:

indeed amazing playlist, I loved it
