Good morning, Irene.

`Bonjour Irene !
Avatar 12:10pm Mdurek:

@vk , it's a relief too...agreed! Both that they got funding and we can all just appreciate the music :)
Avatar 12:11pm kat330:

"Wold" is an Old English term for a forest or an area of woodland on high ground. But no reason it can't be heliocentric, too. ;)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Andrew Waterloo:

It is a relief.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Irene Trudel:

Good morning all! I think I'm sort of awake. Nice seeing (and meeting) a bunch of you at last night's Hoof & Mouth Sinfonia finale to WFMU's Marathon. Thanks to all who made a pledge to keep us going for another year!!! We are truly grateful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm common:

cute kitty...with the cone of shame. awwwww.
Avatar 12:14pm stavros:

It's really a testament to their programming that WFMU can pull off such a short fund raising drive every year.

Is that kitty sleeping on a WFMU hoodie?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Brian in UK:

@kat the Lincolnshire Wolds are probably the most well known over here.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm mariano:

I kind of miss the marathon, to be honest: for the first time in almost 20 years of listening, I was able to stay almost constantly tuned in because I've been working from home. It was like being on an FMU cruise.

nice Floyd track - this one reminds me of "Live at Pompeii" documentary
Avatar 12:23pm kat330:

Hi Irene, hello one and all.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm KevinfromBayRidge:

hello all, Hope our feline friend doesn't mess with Mouse pledges!
Great Marathon Irene. Now just do what you do so well!
Avatar 12:25pm kat330:

Love the sun-centric theme, Irene. It's a sunny day in So IN, up to nearly 70 today.

And speaking of sun-centric programs: Anyone not within distance of the H&M last night catch the newest incarnation of "Cosmos"?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm KevinfromBayRidge:

it's on the DVR, Kat
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Andrew Waterloo:

Is that a new series or a re-release of the original?
Avatar 12:27pm Whooda:

Ummagumma. Now I am a convert. I revel in my Irenianess!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Brian in UK:

@AndrewC Ofcourse.

@kat Lincs is adjacent to Notts.
Avatar 12:28pm kat330:

@Kevin: The first ep is understandably laying down a foundation -- clearly the programs are meant for schoolchildren to watch in class -- but I'm hopeful it will be as engrossing as Sagan was.
Avatar 12:30pm kat330:

@Andrew: New series with Tyson. I noticed he did *not* say "BIIILLLions!"
  12:30pm van:

Love this album
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Think I first heard this on a label sampler in the very early 70s. It didn't get better for them after this.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Andrew Waterloo:

@kat330, cool, Tyson doesn't have Sagan's wonderfully sedative voice.
  12:32pm Bubba:

Thank you, Irene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, kitties! The "cone of shame" is gone and my friend 'Nello is content to dream of mousies, not chasing down mouse pledges-- although he would not turn one down after the fact.
Avatar 12:36pm Mdurek:

Nice tune. Like the books with pop structure and a new sweet female vocalist
Avatar 12:41pm Mdurek:

Love Leo Kottke, got to see him in a small venue in high school. This it was Club Bené.
Avatar 12:42pm kat330:

Just heard the other day from a local DJ the derivation of the word "Ummagumma." Better late than never.
  12:42pm van:

Julie plays a cover of the Floyd tune that is wonderful if you've never heard it. Its by "Black Fortress of Opium"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Irene Trudel:

@Mdurek, I'm going to see Leo Kottke tonight at City Winery in NYC. One of the few people that I would drag myself to see the day after the Hoof & Mouth. Robert Fripp might be anotehr, but I'll settle for this King Crimson track.
Avatar 12:47pm kat330:

@Irene: Will the entire solar system be represented today?

Was lucky to see Kottke in concert early in his career. Leon Redbone opened for him.
  12:49pm serge z:

Hey Irene,it was great working with you last night, paying for it now being hung over and half asleep at work, at least i can still listen to your show
Avatar 12:49pm kat330:

@Lovecraft: Ohhh, that's not what WFPK DJ Duke claims. I mean, maybe that was where the sound-syllables were taken, but purportedly they named the LP after the term one of their roadies used for "making whoopie."
  12:51pm don:

Some of the best rock drumming ever on this Crimson album by Mike Giles-
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Irene Trudel:

@kat, I don't know where this show will go. Suffice to say my head has stars whirling around inside. Speaking of stars-- sorry I missed Cosmos last night. I'm a fan of astronomy and loved the original with Carl Sagan. I'll be interested in seeing where Neil deGrasse Tyson takes it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Irene Trudel:

@serge, thanks so much! You did a fantastic job with monitors for the H&M. I think we're all paying for last night a bit today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm northguineahills:

Dig this Krimson. Perfect for my mood.
Avatar 12:54pm Whooda:

Irene I REALLY appreciate your show today. Just perfect.
Avatar 12:56pm kat330:

@Irene: Interesting that Neil said "we are all made of star stuff." I was finishing his sentence instead with "stardust" and thinking of Joni's "Woodstock."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks, @Whooda! Trying to keep it light & dreamy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Irene Trudel:

@kat, if I remember right, Carl Sagan used that phrase a lot in the original Cosmos series. A tribute to his vision perhaps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm common:

@Irene: i love the original cosmos. interested in the new one. no one can beat carl sagan, though.
Avatar 12:59pm V Priceless:

wonderful set!
Avatar 1:00pm kat330:

The whole series is a tribute to his mentor. Near the end he explains the wonderful connection he made with Sagan when he was only 17 (Tyson, that is).
  1:01pm van:

Carl Sagan was awesome. So was Cosmos.
  1:02pm Mark:

This Pharaoh Sanders is awf the hook!
Avatar 1:02pm kat330:

Really digging this Sanders.
Avatar 1:03pm kat330:

Guess I owe you a beverage of choice, Mark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Irene Trudel:

@van, agreed. One of my all-time favorite series. Hoping the new series "pushes" further out into that universe.
Avatar 1:10pm still b/p:

Sometimes, in the original, just the Sagan-speak sound could be entertaining -- as in, if I remember correctly, "Even in the upper levels of its atmosphere, Venus is a thoroughly nasty place."
Avatar 1:11pm Mdurek:

@irene, Holy moly! That's awesome. Enjoy. Leo is a sip of the finest latte. I figured out one of his songs in high school. Would love to see Fripp too. :)
Avatar 1:12pm earrie:

Very lovely gentle sounds.
  1:13pm van:

Meanwhile, as I've been letting the world know, I had the best dream ever, last night. KaTe Bush was a guest in my house for some reason, and sang to me! In my dream, she actually wrote a song for me and sang part of it to me! It was heavenly. I asked her if it was going on a new album and she kind of laughed and said it wasn't that good. ha! And then I had to wake up. With quite a smile on my face though.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Van, that's a nice dream
  1:15pm Mark:

You MUST find "Glorious Dawn" by Carl Sagan on youtube and play it. If you don't understand the reference, just google it and you'll understand...
  1:15pm van:

I'm just glad I actually remembered it!
Avatar 1:16pm Cheri Pi:

Mr CP and I are now considering buying a TV just for Cosmos. sad to have missed it.
Avatar 1:16pm kat330:

@Van: Quite the dream! :)
  1:17pm Mark:

I went to see Leo Kottke once and I spent the first half hour looking for the bass player who wasn't there--it was Leo playing the bass notes himself.
Avatar 1:17pm kat330:

@Sean: Soon enough you'll be living out your dream. Excited yet?
Avatar 🥁 1:18pm Sigurdur:

yeah loving that dream ... Way da go Van
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, April 1st can't come soon enough, three weeks tomorrow. back to the country I love
Avatar 1:23pm dc pat:

Van: do you remember the song though?? I get lots of ideas from dreams--even song and lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Irene Trudel:

@Sean, I keep meaning to write back. Glad you're going to see our "Mets" opening day. Peter & I would love to find time to see you when you're back in NYC.
Avatar 1:25pm Mdurek:

@Mark . Right! He's like in a smaller niche. More punk than classical in attitude, more classical than punk in technique. No disrespect to classical or punk musicians.
Avatar 1:25pm Mdurek:

Oh man. Can you believe Ralph Kiner passed? His passing re-ignited my Mets fandom.
Avatar 1:25pm kat330:

Only dream of a "celeb" I've had recently involved David Letterman. He's popped up before, too. Huh, can't figure what that's about.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Sean in Bristol UK:

My trip is never complete unless I get to see you, Irene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm mariano:

Ya know, wasn't gonna say this, but I never remember my dreams. Except that the other night during a portion of a dream I looked in a mirror and I was Gregory Peck! No idea what the hell that means.
  1:27pm van:

@dc pat - nope, sure don't. Wish I did. She did show me a sheet of music / lyrics but I don't recall that either, just that she did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Mike East:

this show is hitting the spot today...I, too, am a bit hungover
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Mdurek, that's a nice touch from The Mets where they are wearing a patch on their uniforms in honour of Ralph
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Van, did you ask if Kate could do a couple of live concerts?
  1:29pm van:

@mariano - reminds me of the old Rodney Dangerfield joke: Doc, every morning I wake up, look at myself in the mirror, and I want to throw up! What's wrong with me?! Doc - I don't know but your eyesight is perfect! Ba-dum!

@Sean - I woke up too soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm mariano:

@van: good one! Wish Kate Bush would haunt *my* dreams. Dangerfield also said "I'm so ugly that when I die they're gonna donate my body to science fiction!"
  1:33pm Mark:

So true, Mdurek. He talked a lot between songs. He was funny as hell. Did I mention that he was really drunk? I mean REALLY drunk. So he was this funny drunk guy, telling these hilarious stories, then he'd play a song like friggin' Segovia. Very cool.

@V Priceless: The movie 'contact' had an honesty to the way it portrays a parallel possibility. That honesty is why many remember it lovingly. The same honesty is shared by 'Gravity'

There was a New Yorker article on Neil Degrasse Tyson a few weeks ago. worth a read.
Avatar 2:09pm Danne D:

Hi Folks :)
I see that the station is like $2200 or so from the goal now. As much as I love Irene and Scott, there'd be something really fun about the station hitting the mark during Jim Price's show :D
  2:10pm Mark:

Also worth mentioning that Ralph plays piano, too. I loved how all the guys in Oregon played a number of instruments, and they'd switch around. They used to let each member call the set on successive nights, the only rule being that the set had to feature each player playing each of his instruments at least once. They were a great, great group. I'm sorry I never got the chance to see them live.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Irene Trudel:

@Mark, I was lucky enough to help engineer a concert with Oregon for New Sounds a number of years ago. Ralph played piano at that one. As I recall, his guitar got lost by the airline, and a friend of one of our engineers brought one down for him to play. Great guys, and a really nice set.

This line has a tail like My Sherona right? Is it just me? :)

@Irene, it isn't much but topped my pledge up with $15, maybe your wonderful Trukeepers fancies doing the same.

Sounds like the same chords as Watch the Sunrise.
Avatar 2:43pm kat330:

The Jeff doppeganger! Finally managed to compose my tribute to Buckley, albeit only an instrumental lament at this time. Maybe some day I can write lyrics worthy of the subject.

(Eeesh, I certainly can't talk about anyone else's typing! doppeLganger, s.b. above and earlier bringING :)

Hey Van!
Avatar 2:49pm Parq:

V-Priceless, yes I remember being knocked out (all of 17 years old) by Procal's drummer and carrying him on my "best drummers" list for years. Doug, some of the volunteers were talking last night about how pledges were likely to continue coming in even after the gong. Was it last year or the year before when goal was made in the middle of Scott's show? Reason to be optimistic that this year will be another of the same.
Avatar 2:49pm Parq:

Unless, yes, Irene shows her usual mettle and pulls a clutch performance now.

Okay, about that KaTe Bush dream....I was about to crash tonight and suddenly the whole thing came flooding back at me. I had to get up to note it here. While I don't remember the tune or lyrics, here is what I remember, and this is the first time EVER I have had a dream with the Goddess KaTe in my dreams (and it so goes with your show theme!):

In my house, I notice none other than KaTe Bush roaming around. No idea how or why. But as a HUGE KaTe Fan I am DYING to tell somebody. I don't. After a time, I approach KaTe, finally, to let her know that I have been silent, and have told nobody she is here, not even my closest friends, or those I know are also KaTe fans. I ask her to consider that, how loyal I have been, and ask her if she might be recording something new? Can you please share ANYTHING with me as a reward? (songwise I mean, this is G rated)

She smiles and relents and asks me to follow her to her room...in my house...she pulls out a sheet of music, which she had been composing. It is not typical music at all. It is a bunch of vertical lines down a page, not "musical" in the true sense, but meaningful to KaTe. She starts to sing a little of it, and notes that it is not traditional, but sing-song voice type of music. It was wonderful. And THEN she starts to sing a true traditional song to me that was Heavenly. It was pretty brief, not more than four or so lines. She told me with a shockingly shy smile that she had been writing it for ME. I asked her then if she intended it for a new album...? She told me, again shyly, no, that it wasn't near good enough for anything like that.

And then the kindest fate ever turned cruel and I awoke. Or perhaps that was the kindest thing? If I hadn't, would I ever had remembered any of that once in a lifetime dream?

I doubt it.

That. Was. Incredible.

So incredible I just wanted to share. And I am not making any of this up. I feel like God granted me a wish that I didn't even know I really was wishing.

Hoping for many happy returns.....in 3...2...1....

Did I have a premonition of Kate performing Live???

Avatar 11:05pm Van in DC:

Well. Anyway. I want to say that my dream about KaTe was real. It was days before she announced the live shows. I had no idea. I never suspected. When I found out from Doug Schulkind on his GTDR radio show on Friday that KaTe was "touring", I was blown away. That was well after all of this.

I do not believe in coincidence. I have never, ever dreamed of KaTe before, especially not a dream so real, so life-like. It was surreal.

On several levels, I think I experienced a miracle. At least three that I can think of (levels that is).

I am THRILLED to have a lone solitary ticket to go see KaTe! It is a dream come true, it is a LIFE EVENT.

It is what I have been living for. This is it.

THANK YOU GOD for giving me the dream...I failed to interpret it, who could have? Nobody. Nevertheless - THANK YOU.

September 10th can't come fast enough.
