Avatar 4:38am
Prashanth:

@Bill and Jack: Why is WFMU called WFMU? I don't know much about American radio naming conventions. Does it have a full form - like World's Funkiest Music Underground or something like that?
  4:40am
Fran:

Lucas/Hammill was a good gig Bill and you'll be pleased to hear Hammill was not (too) dramatic! Saw Goblin last week which was a bit more frustrating - some of it truly special but occasional moments where if I shut my eyes they could have been soundtracking Beverley Hills Cop!
Avatar 4:41am
Bill Mac:

Jack, you wanna take this one? Does it have anything to do with the Upsala College connection?
Avatar 4:43am
w41:

Goddammit my credit card is declined for who the hell knows what reason, will be pledging next week :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44am
Jack Mello:

@prashanth, i honestly don't know where the call letters wfmu comes from. checked the history section of the station wiki and it doesn't say. will investigate.
  4:44am
Fran:

This Damon reissue is a complete gem and has been getting heavy rotation in the Franosphere!
  4:45am
P-90:

@Prashanth: American broadcasting stations rarely have call letters that carry meanings like you suggest. Stations on the Eastern side of the country all begin with "W" , on the Western side they all begin with "K". The WFMU call letters were approved when the station was first licensed as a part of Upsala College in 1958, long before there was any inkling of its present identity as a "freeform format" station operated by a non-profit corporation and available all over the planet via the internet.
Avatar 4:47am
Prashanth:

@Jack: Thanks....I guess you now have a topic for an entire show :)
@P-90: Ah so! alles klar... so W for East, FM for Frequency Modulation, U for Uppsala collage...
  4:48am
L.W. George:

Is this a comments thread for listeners only? Do FMU DJs take requests?

I'm in Japan and have a yearnin' fer sumthin' pertickaler-like.
  4:50am
Fran:

It's not George Strait is it L.W?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51am
Jack Mello:

hey LW, welcome. djs check in on the comments. it's tough for us to take request during the fundraiser, but let us know anyway. can't promise we'll have it but...
  4:51am
stating the bleedin' obvious:

pledge and find out L.W.
  4:53am
Fran:

Yo that's what I call hard sell!!
Avatar 4:54am
Caryn:

@LW: During the Marathon, very unlikely. The rest of the time, depends on the DJ. Some are more free-flowing and unplanned, like Ken, and may take requests, others have clearly planned (sometimes thematic) shows, and don't. I've once gotten a request through by asking for a song to be played on a future show, not the current one.
  4:55am
P-90:

No, the "FM" is appended after thee four "call letters" of an fm station, just as "AM' follows the call letters of the am stations. ("WFMU FM") so the f and m in the callsign probably do not refer to freq. mod. The original terrestrial transmitter for the station was built (and remains) on a geologic feature called "The First Watchung Mountain", and the F and M may refer to "First/Mountain", the letter "W" traditionally remaining reserved for that prefix for all stations on the Eastern side of the country.
Avatar 4:57am
Prashanth:

@P-90: That just got even more interesting. Thanks a ton!
  4:58am

  5:04am

  5:04am
stating the bleedin' obvious:

  5:06am
