dave, i love this amazing show so far!
Avatar 9:18pm Dave Mandl:

@Cheri: And after just three songs. You're my dream audience.
Avatar 9:19pm Droll:

I reserve judgment for the "Final Stretch", which should begin any moment now.
  9:20pm sweet cheri:

thank you very much ,dave.
Avatar 9:20pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: It's starting...now.
  9:29pm sweet cheri:

dave you know yoko destroyed the beatles!!
Avatar 9:30pm Dave Mandl:

Oy. There was nothing left to destroy.
Swag For Life Member 9:32pm 12539:

10:32 is definitely the final stretch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Ike:

@S.C.@9:05, your conduct generally speaks for itself.

@SC: Ike is a perfect gentleman. Not sure what you could be referring to.
  9:40pm HollyT:

This is nice. Very Komeda-ish
  9:41pm PJ:

dva = two in English. The band is a duo. Pronounced "dvah".
Avatar 9:41pm Droll:

I was a big fan of the UK industrial act, Clock DVA, but this DVA is also a treat! Slick production on a solid song.
Avatar 9:41pm Dave Mandl:

@PJ: Ah, thanks. We also have a Czech speaker right here.
  9:42pm robin:

this is amazing (the dva track)
  9:43pm HollyT:

PJ, I was just going to post the same thing! (I lived in Prague)
Swag For Life Member 9:43pm 12539:

Google tells me DVA were at some radio station called WFMU, on Rob Weisberg's Transpacific Sound Paradise.
Avatar 9:44pm Droll:

12539, I've long complained we need a word for when you discover a cool band listening to FMU, then you search them only to find all the links go back to FMU.

Yoko broke up Utopia.
Avatar 10:14pm JakeGould:

Tome, I was born in Brighton Beach in 1968! But the Gerritsen Beach I know is—I hate to say—like a pocket of NYC where Hell’s Kitchens Westies still live today. I mean isn’t Halloween a horrible vandal show there still?

Yoko breaks anything she touches. Yoko Broko.

Welcome to the fifties, Rabbit. It only sucks when everybody you meet looks like grandchildren.
Avatar 10:18pm JakeGould:

Okay Tome, respect to you. But back on college some co-workers took me to a bar out in Gerritsen Beach. Lights as red as the bar in “Mean Streets.” Started to obsessively eat pistachios until we realized we weren’t wanted there; some “business” was taking place. Walked out and we were covered in red/pink dye on our hands & mouths.

College for me was 1986-1991.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Ike:

Yoko also broke up Mozart's band, started the Great Fire of London in 1666, and injected vitamin B12 with morphine into Hank Williams Sr. just before he died. Not to mention knocking 91.1 FM off the air just now.
Swag For Life Member 10:21pm 12539:

Dave, you can leave Junior's Farm of the playlist but we all still know you played it.

Don't know if Yoko's at fault, but 91.1 is definitely off the air.
Avatar 10:25pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: Corrected, thanks.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm SB:

Is anyone in Brooklyn having bizarre reception problems or is it just me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm pacific standard simon:

Also, those flack vests she donated to the police were made of pulverized "John&Yoko" records.
Avatar 10:28pm Snortley:

Signal's back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Ike:

Yoko has taken her jackboot off of the 91.1 signal. It's back on the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Tome:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Tome:

Avatar 10:30pm Droll:

Every bit as good as Mandl said: Wings, Jr's Farm in the studio: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 10:30pm JakeGould:

SB, yeah reception went to hell for me out here in Bay Ridge in the 70s near 5th Avenue. Also, @Tome in my current ‘hood there are still more than a few “those bars.” Holy crap it’s like I live in Brooklyn’s past over here. But yeah, 91.1 is dead here it seems. Listening to the stream now on my iPhone via the app.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Ike:

91.1 out again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm pacific standard simon:

Last spring, Yoko gave up part of her liver for Lou Reed!

ohh dave, again thnx for a great show.
  10:33pm Scott Briggs:

I used to live in Astoria 30th Avenue west and god, it sucked then back in 1995-1997. Now it's another hipster paradise,
almost. There wasn't even a bar worth going to then!
Anyway, was at the Lou Reed Berlin Live at MMI last night
in Astoria. Better food there now, as well. sort of.
Avatar 10:34pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Thank you. Glad you like it.

Avatar 10:35pm JakeGould:

@Tome, I thought they were restoring White Island (aka: Mau Mau Island)? Gone? Really? Sandy pushed it away?
Avatar 10:35pm Dave Mandl:

Just to be clear: Is there a problem with our 91.1 FM signal? I guess you're all listening on the web...
  10:35pm marc:

FM Signal is out
  10:36pm Scott Briggs:

I always get a staticy, semi-stereo signal here on L.I.
on my basic receivers, too frustrating, I stick now to the laptop connex. and now have a new pair of Alesis monitors which are just fabulous. The car is even worse unless you're in Queens or Brooklyn maybe it's ok then.
Avatar 10:36pm Snortley:

Signal's gone again. Or was. Now it's back.
Avatar 10:36pm Dave Mandl:

@marc: Thanks. Seems to be OK from here, but we'll look into it.
Avatar 10:36pm JakeGould:

@Dave, 91.1 was out here in Bay Ridge. Now it’s back, but seems weak.

Nothing like a Poe movie that was really Lovecraft! Kind of.
Maybe nutty weather messing up transmitter? It only goes from summer to winter every other day now.
Avatar 10:42pm JakeGould:

@Snortley, they have been “rebuilding” Plumb Beach since at leafs 1986 when me & friends would ride our bikes down that way to head out to Floyd Bennet Field & Breezy Point. Pork barrel project that spans generations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Avatar 10:45pm Snortley:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm pacific standard simon:

  10:45pm Scott Briggs:

I was gonna say, last Halloween was certainly worse! As in, nada.
Avatar 10:46pm JakeGould:

@Snortley, I agree to a point. But we are talking 20+ years of one small stretch of land being worked on. C’mon already!
Avatar 10:46pm Snortley:

20 years because the ocean is relentless. The latest engineering, with breakwaters, may slow it down some.
Avatar 10:50pm JakeGould:

I grew up in Brighton Beach. Same B.S., different years. You know Sea Breeze Park? That place gets water seepage since the 1970s. Still not fixed! There’s a huge dry area where soccer games get played & water occasionally seeps out. Still the same since the 1970s.
  10:51pm Scott Briggs:

I didn't know Floyd Bennett has an archery range? that's cool.
I went to one of my old ranges on LI last weekend, they still

Yeah, one person being sexy on Christmas is nowhere near the sexy-fest Halloween has become.
  11:15pm Scott Briggs:

they must be desperate they're pushing Furby again on Amazon already. Thought those went out with The Offspring....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...yeah - when we ask who is wearing them - we mean addresses & phone #s...
  11:17pm Scott Briggs:

well, that chick that married the 53 yr. old actor Dough Hutchison is single now! Courtney...whatsherface. She might be game.

Halloween correlates to ♏Scorpio - which is Sex & Death. Eros & Thanatos - deffo related. Everything fundamental & repressed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Thx J.G.
  11:19pm Scott Briggs:

c'mon, Courtney would look stellar in a sexy slutty Xmas outfit! I'm lobbying.....

  11:22pm Scott Briggs:

Landru! this is a great episode. Just watched that one a year ago or under. My back is killing me I'd better sign off soon.... sitting on tuchus all night here.
  11:24pm Scott Briggs:

reminds me of the Feldman Beckett words and music collab. Not my fave Feldman but it's challenging. I dunno Beckett as well as I should. But the film Beckett...now that I know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Waiting for Landru.
  11:25pm Scott Briggs:

my copy of White Light White Heat skipped like this during Sister Ray the other night and I was ready to bug right out!
  11:25pm Scott Briggs:

Your agonizer, Mr. Kyle!

Take this Godot - may it serve you well.
  11:33pm Scott Briggs:

I even whipped out my copy of NYC Man earlier tonight, glad I bought that and Thought and Expression a few years back.
Avatar 11:34pm Droll:

I'm with Mandl on Lou, he never floated my boat, but Aynsley makes everything sound better.
  11:39pm M:

Riddle of the Sphinx

How bout the director of the film
Important Sally Potter
Lyricist singer Henry Cow and the likes
Collaborator w Lindsay Cooper
  11:40pm M:

Love your show
  11:40pm Scott Briggs:

I'm really more into the Velvets than much of Lou solo, but
I'm a huge fan of both of course. Turned out Sterling Morrison graduated from my high school. But I was class o' 86 myself.
Good God. Nobody in my class would have known Lou or
the Velvets..they were more into goddamned hair metal
and Def Leppard,Van halen and stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm David L.B. is RRN63:

PBS has an American Masters on Lou Reed they've been showing. It's worthy, for a one-hour TV show thing - makes the point he brought Raymond Chandler & Burroughs sensibilities into the Rock form. & the Velvets created the whole idea of Alternative Rock in the 1st place in a very real sense - & nobody here is unaffected by *that*...I mean - in the sense like Dylan single-handedly brought Poetry to Rock when there was none before - True - & Not True...

- American Masters debuts a Hendrix episode Tuesday; reviews say it's not much that's new, but it's done well...
  11:42pm Scott Briggs:

Had never heard of Riddle of the Sphinx until now. I wasn't knocked out by the Soft Machine but this score sounds really awesome! All synth etc. Much more into this.
Right, just watched The AMasters PBs on Lou again the other night on YTube, I have my vhs copy of that somewhere from orig. broadcast. a relic already!
Avatar 11:42pm Dave Mandl:

@M: Thanks. The director was Laura Mulvey (and her husband, whose name escapes me). See: www.bfi.org.uk...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm David L.B. is RRN63:

People diss PBS - but I thot it conveyed the impact. I was moved.
Avatar 11:44pm Dave Mandl:

The film was rereleased on Blu-Ray, which probably looks great. But I believe the whole thing is on YouTube somewhere.
Avatar 11:44pm Dave Mandl:

...Or maybe Vimeo. I forget.
  11:45pm Scott Briggs:

That's a good American Masters for sure, one of the better ones. I wish they'd do one on Morton Feldman that would be keen! The Warhol 2 hr. one was really good as well.
  11:45pm M:

Oops so sorry, YES!
Peter Wollen
Many thanks!
Tired, and listening to Cooper as of late, so brain is wired
  11:46pm Scott Briggs:

one great docu. that I'd never seen from early 70s
I caught by accident, Painters Painting a few weeks ago. That's a great film!! If you're into the abstract downtown dudes and all that, Frank Stella, Motherwell, et al. A great great movie.
  11:47pm sweet cheri:

dave, may i be the last to say thnx for a real wonderful show tonight!
  11:47pm Scott Briggs:

Granted I was a young tyke at that point. Fingerpainting at best!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- I think it was A.Masters who did a very long Phillip Glass one too - which engaged & schooled *me*.
  11:47pm Scott Briggs:

oh cheri cheri my black leather ladyyyyy
  11:48pm M:

Yes, and watch
Philip Guston doc!!!
  11:49pm Scott Briggs:

I think I saw most or much of the P Glass one, yeah that was good. Philip Guston doc.!??? haven't heard of that, I will go seek that out for sure, thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...that Fudge was less 'ham-fisted' & more Proggy than I think of them being - which I approve of...
Avatar 11:49pm Dave Mandl:

@Cheri: Thanks, but not the last, I hope.
Avatar 11:50pm JakeGould:

@Scott Briggs, exactly. I graduated HS in 1986. Listening to the B-52s & Devo made you “weird” and Jim Morrison was “deep.” College taught me about the Velvets.
  11:51pm Scott Briggs:

in my case it was R.E.M. I think, more than anything that led me to the Velvets. like many.
  11:52pm Scott Briggs:

I didn't even know what the fork Gothic Rock was until maybe 1983 and barely then! Sad!
Avatar 11:52pm Droll:

I'm reserving my final judgement of the show until the Prog Police reports are filed. Utopia, Gong, and Vanilla Fudge... That's a lot of paperwork...
  11:53pm Scott Briggs:

at least he didn't play 2112!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

There may be a link to watch the PBS video online, but a quick search located this - www.pbs.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...you could worse than the B52s, Devo & (sue me!) - even the Doors
- but the Velvets pre-dated & influenced each & every one of them, of course! (Gerard Melanga had leather trow before Jimbo...)
  11:56pm Scott Briggs:

I really think my life was saved by getting into college radio around 1984-86, basically. WNYU, etc. Once I got into that, the rest was easy enough. Although I could do without Scratch Acid and Throbbing Gristle at that time....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Blacktooth:

That Eddie Detroit track was so great. That guy was a supremely tripped-out individual.
  11:57pm Scott Briggs:

and earlier Lou had actually slapped Bowie in the face! ahh the irony....
Swag For Life Member 11:58pm 12539:

Thanks, Dave. Great final stretch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm fleep:

Thanks DaveM
  11:58pm Scott Briggs:

Avatar 11:59pm Droll:

Thanks, DM. Have a fun week!
Avatar 11:59pm Dave Mandl:

And thanks as usual, everyone. Have a great week.
@Droll: I need to see those numbers before you publish them.
Avatar 12:00am JakeGould:

Leave 2112 alone!
  12:01am Scott Briggs:

well alright then, at least he didn't play Mr. Roboto!
