Howdy, Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm BDR:

Hey, just another day in America, yes?

Haven't heard this in years. I can't keep up with all the people Bowie ripped off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...oh! - apostrophe violation...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm pacific standard simon:

It's a very special day to me.

Avatar 9:06pm Dave Mandl:

Welcome, everyone.
Avatar 9:07pm Dave Mandl:

@RRN63: That will go on your permanent record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...one major service FMU has performed for me is bringing the actual Audio to stuff I have only read or heard about...
  9:08pm bloopy:

Greetings! Roy Harper yesss
Avatar 9:09pm Dave Mandl:

@ljfromw: Thanks. Despite Led Zeppelin, I consider Harper very underrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...R.Friedman sounds like GraceSlick fronting Pentangle...
Avatar 9:11pm Dave Mandl:

@BDR: Good point about Bowie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm George of Troy:

Hiya Dave! Glad to be tuned in. Was great to hear Mr. Harper.
Avatar 9:12pm Dave Mandl:

Hey George. Yeah, haven't played him in too long. It was either that or "Have a Cigar."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Searching R.Friedman - interesting!...
Avatar 9:13pm Dave Mandl:

Yes, definitely. Famous for writing "Windy," which I should have played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- always loved 'Windy' - soo Pop & also so about Acid.
Avatar 9:18pm Dave E:

Hi Dave - Dave here!
Avatar 9:19pm deanland:

Ruthann Friedman is one of the great secrets out there.
Avatar 9:27pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Dave. @deanland: True.
  9:27pm luh3417:

and the android wfmu app is great too :-)
Avatar 9:29pm Dave Mandl:

Akkk...I meant to mention that. You're right. I'm too iPhone-centric.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 9:30pm Droll:

It doesn't matter which version I hear, Windy was ruined by a college roommate who often spontaneously sang the "Aunt Bee" version, now those are the only lyrics I can remember. And his singing, which was actually good.
  9:31pm peter:

I saw Ruthann a couple years ago in a tiny caberet in Seattle as part of a friends animation show. She was SO great. Thanks for playing this!
Avatar 9:31pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Ouch. That's cruel.
Avatar 9:33pm Dave Mandl:

@peter: Wow, you're very lucky. That's great.
  9:33pm trish:

I'm keen to try the Mozilla phone, what with their being first with Do Not Track and all.
Avatar 9:35pm Dave Mandl:

@trish: Ah, I didn't realize that.
Avatar 9:35pm Droll:

DM, I make it sound worse than it is, he loved "Beautiful Music" and turned me on to all kinds of "elevator" music I now enjoy. He also took me to my first Neil Diamond show, no way to thank him properly for that. He did a great Neil impression, strong voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Bastille Day has come & gone in France already, but I send them my congratulations on winning the U-20 World Cup in soccer on Saturday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

..was JohnZorn's dad in the Debonairs? : P ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm pacific standard simon:

@Droll - I had no idea that you were my college roommate!

Avatar 9:38pm Dave Mandl:

@RRN63: He wouldn't have passed the audition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm George of Troy:

Dave, all this talk of the song Windy brings back a memory of growing up in Queens in the 70's. Do you recall a very un-politically correct rewrite of the song that referenced a certain former mayor of NYC? I've yet to meet anyone in my adult life who remembers this.
Avatar 9:43pm Dave Mandl:

@GoT: No! I'm surprised I don't remember it. We're talking about Mayor Lindsay, or someone even earlier?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm George of Troy:

Yep, Lindsay! I used to hear it from friends who had older brothers. Really terrible, but interesting lore nonetheless.
Avatar 9:50pm Dave Mandl:

You should tell me about it privately if it's off-color.
Swag For Life Member 9:50pm 12539:

George, there's a post mentioning New York Young Americans for Freedom with some lyrics here:

  9:51pm Richard from Venezuela:

Hello Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Ike:

Hey hey, everybody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm pacific standard simon:

Pretty juvenile song parody, which is how those things are supposed to be.

He was also known for using Spanky and Our Gang's "Give A Damn" as a campaign song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm George of Troy:

@12539: Interesting find! Different lyrics from what I recall, which are way more inappropriate.
  10:00pm bloopy:

have it been 2 months since the drum throwdown?? woah time flies...... crazzy

  10:06pm Richard from Venezuela:

My favorite song for the bad plus. Thanks for playing it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm jmd:

I've not heard Minamo before. 'Favorite'd it and I'll be getting my hands and ears on some soon. Thanks for playing. Reminds me of Debussy etudes a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm pacific standard simon:

It's interesting, Dave M -- I often hear a lot of early 20th C. classical music influences in the stuff you play that I've never heard before.
Swag For Life Member 10:13pm 12539:

These Jandek Nocturnes freak me out. Can this really be the same man?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm pacific standard simon:

More the Germans than the French, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm pacific standard simon:

No, Austrian.
Avatar 10:16pm Droll:

Faye aired some of this Jandek recently, and I maintain this is actually "Jandek UK" or "Jandek 182" or some other performer using the same name.
Avatar 10:17pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Beats me. I don't really plan what I play. It's all pretty spontaneous, so it's whatever happens to come out in the heat of the moment.
Avatar 10:17pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: It's either him or a very good imitation. It says "Corwood Industries" in the usual Jandek typeface.
Avatar 10:20pm Droll:

DM, Sure the artwork looks right, but this is actually MELODIC.
  10:22pm ?:

This Jandek piece is making my weekend. Amazing.
Swag For Life Member 10:22pm 12539:

He's come a long way from "Painted My teeth."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm pacific standard simon:

Washington strawberries are just insane this week! I'm eating some on pound cake with whipped cream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

  10:37pm tahomajohn:

Also in WA this weekend.. the subpop event in Georgetown yesterday was divine:)
Avatar 10:41pm Dave Mandl:

@RRN63: Focus 3 is a great record, seriously. Get your hands on a copy if you can.
Avatar 10:46pm deanland:

Focus was under rated due to Hocus Pocus. A lot of radio stations used Focus music for theme beds and background for stagers.
Avatar 10:47pm Droll:

Some fancy drumming on this... oh hey! Look, he's a drummer! Thanks for this introduction.
Swag For Life Member 10:52pm 12539:

Fancy drumming indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm G:

CD's NEVER kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- that's kinda perplexing - as 'HocusPocus' does have humor - but its' energy & musicianship are topdrawer. On such things careers depend (accounting for era also)...
Avatar 10:56pm deanland:

Hints of Traffic tunes buried in this piece.
  10:57pm sara:

Sorry about those skips. I've noticed that happening on a few shows. Do you guys have compressed air near the cd players? Or something greener. Or maybe you could pre-rip tricky cds into lossless digital files like apple lossless or flac in advance?
  10:57pm trish:

hey, yeah. That's it.
Avatar 10:59pm Dave Mandl:

I think the DJs here are just not gentle enough with the CDs they play. Though I rarely hear skips on vinyl!
Avatar 10:59pm Dave Mandl:

Here it comes...
Avatar 10:59pm Droll:

Bring back vinyl! We never had that skipping problem back in the... Uhh, well, 8-Track! Bring back 8-track because everyone loves the channel-switch mid-song.

Hey G, long time no see!

Was out of town for my father's early 80th b'day party most of this week -- between ongoing daily work, social calendar, and lack of privacy, no commenting time till I got home tonight...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Irwin:

I read recently in the New York Times that vinyl is making a comeback. I also read it in the NYT two years ago. In 2005 I read in the Times that vinyl is making a surprising comeback. That reprised a theme that appeared in the Times in 2002. As early as 1995 the NYT was reporting that vinyl is making a big comeback. Dave, have you heard anything about this?
  11:03pm sara:

they said CDs would last forever... as long as no one touches them and there's no air (
Avatar 11:04pm deanland:

The Mike Pride cut referenced Barleycorn, big time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm G:

They also said Edison cylinders will be the next big thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm pacific standard simon:

Vinyl IS making a comeback... in my rumpus room!
  11:07pm sara:

but if you resell your Edison cylinders, breaking the license on the label Mr. Edison will personally come to your carriage house and shoot your horse.
Avatar 11:08pm deanland:

@Irwin: the comeback of vinyl is what's making a comeback.
Avatar 11:08pm Droll:

I love the big gasp for breath mid-ID. Why don't Clear Channel and Viacom stations have 45-second long IDs?
Avatar 11:08pm Dave Mandl:

@Irwin: No, but they say Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is going to be really popular soon. Lots of "hipsters" there, artisanal food, that kind of thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Ike:

Is the late night PATH really that unreliable? The late night schedule is frustrating and ridiculously infrequent, but it's almost always on time with its in my (admittedly limited) experience. Reading the schedule can be a pain in the dingus, though.
Avatar 11:12pm Dave Mandl:

It used to be exactly on time every week, but recently it's been a total crapshoot. And the display is often wrong. Says the next train is at 12:49 when it's actually coming at 12:19.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm pacific standard simon:

Clearly, an O. Henry style solution is called for; WFMU needs to sell itself to corporate overlords so that it can buy non-contact, laser-scanning, Edison-cylinder-reading machines!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- one April Fools' the Smithsonian announced that because of the unreliability of changing formats & platforms - they would be transferring all audio to something stable: 78rpms...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Ike:

That blows, Dave. I wanted to slap the entire Port Authority upside their heads with a slimy dead Hudson trout when they reduced late nights from every 30 min. to every 35 min. Those maroons.
  11:18pm trish:

Horseshoe crabs have been getting along just fine next to more evolved species for hundreds of millions of years. Or next to lesser evolved, depending on how you look at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Irwin:

Dave—BREAKING NEWS, according to a story in last week's NYT: Everybody's online 24/7, but we're not really communicating with each other. We're losing the human touch.
Avatar 11:21pm Dave Mandl:

@Irwin: Yeah, right.
Avatar 11:21pm Dave Mandl:

Next you're going to tell me college kids are having sex-and-drugs parties.

Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm pacific standard simon:

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission. And I want to help you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm pacific standard simon:

I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a... fraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you.
Avatar 11:34pm Dave Mandl:

So you're going to kill me, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm G:

@Droll: Driving back from Maryland/DC, there is a place in southern Jersey where I can't get Baltimore, DC, or NYC stations. Flipping around the dial this afternoon, I came across a Philly AM mainly-talk station playing an all-Sinatra music show. An ad came on. You'll never guess which one. Hint: it contained this line "Can you give me an example?"

Some things just *never* get old, kinda like vinyl revivals.
Swag For Life Member 11:35pm 12539:

Dave, various sources indicate the Ensemble titles as "Proposal 1," Proposal 2," etc

Avatar 11:37pm Droll:

G, I saw T&C performing at a county fair a few weeks ago with some local pickup band. I think they were drunk. The band, that is. Dan & Joel nailed it, as always.
Avatar 11:38pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Ah, I think you're right. Buried in the text on the CD it says, "proposals 1-12." Thanks.

G, that's the spot where I usually check to see what WPRB or (if I can get it) the Drexel station are playing. Or even WXPN, which isn't completely hopeless. Or WGLS, which is usually playing something cheesy and terrible, but not always. I'd have to be really desperate to resort to AM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...snacktime :
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm G:

@Ike: The FM stations are pretty vile, too, and I just keep pressing scan till I have to switch bands and try again. Can't really look at the dial. It's a little too congested to be doing that at 75-85 :)
Avatar 11:48pm Droll:

Every radio lover needs an HD radio. Semi-dead formats like Oldies and baroque/chamber are hidden away on HD stations. And advertisers know nobody is listening so they rarely buy the ad time and some HD channels are completely ad-free.
  11:49pm trish:

@Dave Yep.
I wish music formats were more like Gastropoda (snails, slugs, etc) and play in any damn environment, salty, dry, airborne or stuck in the mud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Ike:

Congested, G? Try I-295 until exit 56 (connects to Turnpike exit 7) for MUCH less traffic. You'll be able to switch stations more easily for those first 56 miles northbound. :)
