Listener comments!

  3:07pm
Winston Christmas Music Hater:

We shall go on to the end. We shall fight it on the radio, we shall fight it at holiday parties, we shall fight it in the malls, the A&Ps, and the WaWas. We shall defend our aching ears and brains, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight it on the internet, we shall fight it at family get-togethers, we shall fight it at office holiday events. We shall never surrender!
  3:09pm
S. Goat:

So, what's the reason Irwin is late this time? Is he going to blame cab drivers, pedestrians, Canada geese, the Postal Service, or something different this time?
  3:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Winston: A great piece of oratory. Now let me find an mp3 of George Michael's "Last Christmas" and do a mash-up with that...
  3:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Irwin and all!
Nice Jim Flora, as usual. He has art for just about every season/occasion!
  3:13pm
Michael:

Hey now Irwin. Off to Canterbury quite early.
  3:14pm
Savory C:

what about was not was in the wawas?
  3:15pm
Carmichael:

Richard Sinclair! One of my favorite Canterbury artists.
  3:15pm
Winston Christmas Music Hater:

THAT TOO, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!!!! HAVE PEOPLE AT LAST NO SENSE OF DECENCY????
  3:15pm
Alison Porchnik:

The only modern Christmas song I make an exception for in my outright hatred of modern Christmas songs is Brian Dewan's cover of "R2D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas." If you don't know it, you must check it!
  3:17pm
northguineahills:

Yeah, I'm going to echo Carmichael's sentiments.
  3:19pm
Parq:

I remember Hatfield and the North distinctly from ca/ 1975, but I never knew where they got their name until I saw the highway sign in the denouement of the graphic novel "V for Vendetta".
  3:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Michael, Carm, NGH, Alison and everyone!
Yep, this vibe is very Canterbury, jazzy prog.

@AP: I like Brian Dewan in general, so will hafta look into that!
  3:20pm
Parq:

No, it was 1974, as it turns out. Their first album, memorably, included a track called "Going Up To People and Tinkling".
  3:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Motorhome "Melodrammer"?
  3:21pm
Alison Porchnik:

He covers this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUFZklIOFvg
  3:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Jon Bon Jovi, huh? Thanks Alison!
  3:24pm
Alison Porchnik:

Happy Horrodays
  3:32pm
Zach:

That Optiganally Yours track was cool....haven't listened to any of his side stuff, just Pinback
  3:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Woohoo! Disc-Jockey permitted Bacchanalia for the next week! Thanks Irwin!
  3:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

More solo Susanna Hoffs.
  3:39pm
Woo:

Ow! Ow! Ouch!
  3:40pm
Michael:

If Bruce always sounded like this I'd be interested.
  3:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bruce Spring"suite" :)
Not Quite the Best of the Boss, but still quite enjoyable ultra-compressed!

Sing along everyone, you know the words! "Hdfany Ijt wndsdr wit flzke ihe vk of yr bdfnk Cadiiaac"!
  3:44pm
Mike East:

I liked that song better fuzzy than not.
  3:45pm
Bessie Smith:

Y'know honey, if your pink Cadillac is fuzzy, I say you oughta get it waxed...
  3:57pm
Aretha:

Amen, sister.
  4:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

The George Formby Grill, with Irwin.
  4:02pm
Woo:

I believe George is honored at the very end of the Beatles Free As a Bird on Anthology I. Look it up.
  4:02pm
Stanley:

Oo-er missus!
  4:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Push"! Love this one! This in fact was my intro to the soca style of music.
  4:08pm
jason:

Sitting on the toilet, listening to this "push it" number. Thanks irwin!
  4:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah Sexton!

@jason: PuSH IT!
  4:15pm
Irwin:

sample: "Israel" by Siouxsie & Banshees
  4:15pm
Stanley:

Sing-a-long Israel?
  4:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

I like Siouxsie, but haven't heard "Israel" yet.
  4:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

I like this Death Cab For Cutie as well, but it's refreshing to hear a nice instro version of it. Reminds me of Marco Benevento w/o the vocals.
  4:20pm
Woo:

Just saw Magical Mystery Tour with Bonzos singing Death Cab For Cutie. Big Paul-is-Dead clue.
  4:22pm
Irwin:

One of the best stalker songs.
  4:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oh well, just a long intro. Still, I like hearing like backing track, it's a good'un.
@Woo: And, links the Beatles-Rutles-Bonzos full circle.
  4:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Every Breath You Take", written as a stalker song, somehow became more than just that!
  4:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Beatles-Rutles-Bonzos-Monty Python, as a matter of fact.
  4:32pm
G:

@Matt: Only among those who don't pay close attention to lyrics. I've mentioned this to many women over the years, and in almost every case they are shocked initially but then say it's kind of obvious once you think of it. Don't stand so close to me, Sting!

Great wedding song, people :)
  4:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Jimmie Rodgers and the yodelin' blues!

@G: "I Will Always Love You" is a breakup song! Though I've never personally seen people have that as a wedding dance, I've heard it happens! :)

Sting's songs with The Police often had a creepy vibe to them, as you point out.
  4:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'm not trying to blow nose! I heard that once you start, you can't stop it!
  4:39pm
G:

@Matt; Sting was a young guy trying to write something true but not trite about eros, and that is likely to lead into darker areas. I get that.
  4:39pm
Adrian Monk:

Good Lord, keep that Irwin away from me!!
  4:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

I got the Sullivan Ba- llou uuuuuuuuus!

@G: I like that, "true but not trite". And see what you mean--"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" is quite nice, but even that ultimately deals with social anxiety.
  4:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Music for a 1950s Video Game"! Love the drenched layered sound of it!
  4:53pm
G:

@Matt: See why? People like happy better than the alternative, so there are tons of happy love songs. People know love can end, so there are plenty of straightforward I'm-unhappy breakup songs.

But anything beyond those two obvious possibilities is gonna have a dark component, plus some messiness/complexity, or other traits that correlate with not being immediately appealing or obvious to the preponderance of people.

That last sentence can apply sometimes with FMU programming choices... (Not a slam at all...)
  4:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

A messy world, an even messier love.
And that "not being immediately appealing or obvious" is a great virtue of FMU!
  4:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Mighty Sparrow!
  4:58pm
northguineahills:

Again, I find myself concurring w/ Matt's exclamation point.
  5:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

@NGH: Until they install a "Like" button for commenters punctuation, I'm glad to hear that from you the long way!
  5:05pm
Listening Out There:

Reminds me...it's recipe time:
MINGUS’S 5-STAR RAPTUROUS DEADLY HOLIDAY EGGNOG!! | Mingus News
http://mingusmingusmingus.com/blog/2011/12/08/minguss-5-star-rapturous-deadly-holiday-eggnog/
  5:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

How very topical--thanks LOT!
  5:24pm
Laura L:

A hairball for Christmas, how thoughtful! Thanks, Irwin.
  5:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Admit it, Andy & Ken! The UCB Theater has a strict "NO Exorcisms" policy! You broke it, now you're kicked out!

...Or, maybe they'll say that because they have been unsuccessful at their scam to collect $5 bills--attendees outsmarted them by paying in singles.
  5:25pm
amEdeo:

Sub-par holiday efforts are my specialty! Best way to keep them asking for more.
  5:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey amEdeo!
Subpar gift, or party ideas?
  5:30pm
dan in falls church VA:

@Matt, a had a friend who was a sort of psyilocybin Catholic who thought Every Breath You Take was really about God watching over all of us. Kid you not.
  5:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Noël, the Coward whose material is always strong!
  5:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Psyilocybin Catholic"??! :)
Is that like the Eric Clapton church in "Tommy" where they give drugs and wine for communion?

Hey Dan!
  5:32pm
G:

@dan: Your friend has some gift for allegory.
  5:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

761+6=767 .. that's like the third time I've gotten that question this show...
  5:33pm
G:

You *do* raise the odds of that, Matt. :)
  5:35pm
amEdeo:

Combine the two Matt, and you've got a subpar soup going! The subpar party is the greatest of subpar gifts!

I show up at your house to throw you and all your pets a party, but I fall asleep halfway through the first dance routine. Also no one else shows up, except for that one person who no one really has much to say to, because they are imaginary.
  5:36pm
dan in falls church VA:

Well, she was very religious and had converted to Catholicism of her own initiative in adulthood and attended Mass every Sunday and liked to take Ecstasy and mushrooms and occasionally pills and didn't feel there was any conflict here whatsoever. She had her own interpretations and was a fan of Rev. Matthew Fox of "Cosmic Christ" fame who was eventually excommunicated. She was my girlfriend fo awhile. Last I checked in with her she was unhappy about Ratzinger becoming Pope. So, that's what a psilocybin Catholic is. OR what I meant anyway. Is this a tangent or what???
  5:37pm
dan in falls church VA:

@G, yeah, she had a gift for allegory for sure! And was fun to take drugs and have sex with. & stuff.
  5:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: That's true! I should try to enter 900 comments sometime, see how many repeats I get :)
  5:38pm
G:

well, let's not get onto the ups and downs of relationships with mentally unusual people lol
  5:39pm
dan in falls church VA:

she's was mentally unusual all right. all my girlfriends have been. they would pretty much have to be! ;) lol
  5:39pm
Mike East:

Matt, I expect to see some type of picture graph charting the different combinations after you attempt that.
  5:39pm
G:

@Matt: There are never any carrys (e.g., 275+6=281), nor and 0's, so the number of possibilities is actually far smaller than the close to 1000 you might think.
  5:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@amE: Heh :) And you could play Imaginary Pretend Radio with Chris M for music, where you pretend you're playing Imaginary Radio with Chris M!

@Dan: Well, you *did* remember that stuff even years later! Some kind of trip!
  5:40pm
Irwin:

Mike Harrison: ex-Spooky Tooth lead vocalist.
  5:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Will do! 'Twill be the hit of the WFMU Blog!

@G: I believe that "squared" numbers play some role in the algorithm, but I haven't thought about other such restrictions. Though now you mention it, there AREN'T any "0" answers.
  5:43pm
Carmichael:

This sounds very Todd-like.
  5:45pm
pierre:

BONSOIR IRWIN AND EVERYBODY.
  5:45pm
amEdeo:

Matt: I am still processing all of that, several layers to go. BUT I LIKE IT.
What's this about Spooky Tooth?!
  5:47pm
amEdeo:

BONSOIR PIERRE!
  5:47pm
G:

Actually, it's just copying the first two digits in a three digit number, and then doing one single-digit no-carry addition. Because of no 0s etc. not every possible "first two digits" from 111 to 999 are used. No two digit numbers, either (0-99). See how it may only be 300-400 possibilities, total? I've just mentally done a little logic, I've never worked it out in detail to a final total.
  5:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: It's been a while since I took statistics, so as long as you don't quiz me on the permutations/combinations formulae! :) But yeah, that's probably the range we're looking at.
  5:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bonsoir indeed, pierre!
  5:55pm
pierre:

This cool.
  5:57pm
pierre:

Sorry, just forgot my verb here
  6:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

GPS Verb™--locate your missing verbs with the touch of a button! :)
  6:01pm
pierre:

@Matt: this could usefull for me.

(Aaaarg not again)
  6:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

Excellent show Irwin! Thanks for the fun as always, and I'll see you in 2013! (Maybe...!)

Have a good night everyone!
  11:40am
Chris from Stroud, England.:

Good show mate. Loved it!
  1:35am
Emily:

Loving that "Straight Lines with Stain and Crease" song. Great show!
