@Bob My ears were ringing for a week after one concert (I think it was Queensryche in Warsaw). Since then I always use protection if it's too loud :) The problem is: rock musicians and their sound engineers are usually deaf :)

Thanks for the advice, Fred, Danne and Tomek. I always mean to bring earplugs but forgot this time. I've noticed that the photographers who stand in front of the stage at every concert always have them, though.

dunno if they have to be custom made...i have some that are supposed to give a flatter attenuation (letting more of the high-end through). they are like normal flange earplugs but they have a hollow resevoir.

my ears are still ringing from Charged GBH / the Accused 1988. now if I wear eaplugs I can hear the ringing even louder and it drives me nuts.

@map: I don't know either, I'm just repeating what a sound engineer told me. He swears by them, and works at a lot of noise gigs.

My The Suzan moment: I drove over to pick DJ K up at a gig she did in Williamsburg. I was sitting in the car and this AMAZING MUSIC was booming out of the club and onto the street. I was drawn to it. I REALLY REALLY wanted to go in and rock out to this amazing band. But I didn't dare. After all, how would you like it if YOUR mother showed up at the clubs you go to/work at and rocked out? Totally wrong to do. Then the band came tumbling out the door, as adorable and rockin as their live set was. Then K told me she was having them on her show. I was so happy.

@ fred the pub is near the angel in north London shane was there a lot of the time, and on sundays some of the pogues just sat around and played and drunk, it was a good way to chill out on a sunday afternoon

@Jay: My near miss was in Paris, so it's not as if I got another shot, and it was just before they kicked him out of the band. Cool thing is I got talking with that guy who turned out to be the owner of the pub, he converted me to whisky that day; I ended up very drunk without paying anything.
