Listener comments!

  6:01am
Chuck:

Hello!
  6:01am
Caryn:

Well, let's get the show started!
  6:02am
Dave B:

I'm having a hard time getting started myself.

morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02am
Meghan:

Good Morning all!
  6:06am
Caryn:

For some reason, I thought the show started 3 hours earlier. I was so relieved to notice that I remembered the slot wrong, because the 3 extra hours of sleep were definitely needed. I wouldn't have had the energy to start the day without them.
  6:06am
Chuck:

More coffee to get myself started!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07am
Meghan:

Wow, starting THAT early would have been a bad start!
  6:08am
Jay/ London:

Good morning Meghan and all i had my op on Tuesday in some pain but the op went well will be off work for about 2 weeks going to hot here for time of year 70f maybe they said
  6:08am
Caryn:

Yeah, you would've had to quickly improvise a "screw it, I'm asleep" theme. :)
  6:09am
Caryn:

Nice to hear, Jay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10am
Meghan:

That is great to hear Jay! Glad to hear it went well and that you'll have some nice weather to make it even better!
  6:12am
Dave B:

Jay - let the tranquil sounds of WFMU help in a speedy recovery
  6:13am
Jay/ London:

@ caryn i thought the same .. it gave me time to read the papers and have breakfast now i can relex with the show @ Meghan its painful at the mo hope the pain killers work soon in thee mean time the music is just right :)
  6:14am
Caryn:

I'm kinda loving how some of the album titles fit in with the "start" theme: "the early years", "in beginning". And having something "start all over again" on a "reprise" collection is appropriate, too.
  6:14am
Dave B:

hey - there's a theme idea!

Yodelling!
  6:16am
Jay/ London:

oh no not a whole show of yodelling one here and there is enough
  6:17am
Dave B:

just edit the actual yodeling into a continuous 3 hour yodel
  6:17am
Caryn:

I can just imagine God looking at the album title and saying, "Look, there's a good reason yodeling is not included in the Bible as an appropriate way to praise me. Please stop it now. Seriously, a smiting might be in order." Although on some level, I kinda loved it.
  6:18am
Chuck:

Yodelling makes Martian heads explode...
  6:18am
Caryn:

I do think 3 full hours of yodeling might make our brains explode like the aliens in "Mars Attacks!"
  6:19am
Chuck:

See, Caryn thought the same thing!
  6:20am
Jay/ London:

so chuck is that why there are no martians left on mars now !!
  6:20am
Dave B:

I was just gonna mention that, Meghan - planning to go myself.
  6:20am
-> Ming The Merciless <-:

Haha: "(Just Like) Starting Over"!

Greetings from Berlin, Germany
  6:20am
Caryn:

Great minds think alike!
  6:22am
Dave B:

@Ming - I almost sent Meghan Shiina Ringo's version of that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23am
Meghan:

Hallo Berlin! Wie gehts?
  6:25am
Dave B:

Digging this Pan American track...
  6:25am
Chuck:

The music just got really mellow...
  6:25am
-> Ming The Merciless <-:

Everything fine in Berlin - It nearly starts to get spring…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26am
Meghan:

Yeah.... i said it was gonna chill out first and then liven up in the set... I wasn't kidding!
  6:28am
Caryn:

It's so mellow that with the "Starts Friday" title, it feels like this is from Wednesday, when they're just kinda preparing. Or from early Friday morning, when they're in desperate need of coffee.
  6:28am
Dave B:

I'm getting too old to "Wake and Bake" but that song would have been perfect.

"gurrgle gurrgle gurrgle swooosh, foooo.... cough, cough, cough..."
  6:29am
Jay/ London:

mellow is good :) at this time rack it up slowly
  6:31am
Caryn:

Hah, what if Meghan would pull the rug out from under us, first lulling us into a zoned out mood with the calm tracks and then suddenly putting on The Blackeyed Peas "Let's Get It Started" or something? Yikes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32am
Meghan:

ha! Now, that would be just plain cruel..... though I do jest at it later....
  6:32am
Dave B:

Wow - Celluloid lable. Brings back memories working there in 84 or so...

So now post marathon is audit season?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33am
Meghan:

ha! yep!
  6:33am
Chuck:

Turning from mellow to funky...
  6:33am
Dylexic Pastry Pengwin:

I thought this was a topic about TARTS.. but no. geddit? Cos I'm a Pengwin! I mean, I'm Dylsexic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35am
Meghan:

how come when I see the word tarts I think Fawlty Towers?
  6:35am
Caryn:

What with "start" being followed by "begin", I wonder if the themes will go on with "continue", "last" and then "end" and "finish"?
  6:35am
Caryn:

Tarts would be an appropriate theme right after pi(e) day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36am
Meghan:

And according to Jeff P, it was also steak and BJ day too....
  6:40am
Chuck:

More accordion to go with the yodeling...
  6:41am
Dave B:

@Chuck - all we'd need to add would be Zamfir - master of Pan flute.
  6:44am
Chuck:

Hum, pan flute and yodeling. Wonder how you could make that work...
  6:45am
Caryn:

Let's just add in some bagpipes and a didgeridoo to really make the mix as mixed up as possible.
  6:46am
Chuck:

How do we get bagpipes into that whole mix?
  6:46am
Dave B:

Tuvan throat singers for backup vocals
  6:47am
Dave B:

oh, and a glass harmonica or two, please.
  6:47am
Caryn:

And while we're at it, a jew's harp and a slide whistle, and some spoons for percussion. We could use Irish bagpipes instead of Scottish ones to make the sound less grating.
  6:48am
Chuck:

Have you suddenly become a mind reader, Caryn?! Ha!
  6:50am
Caryn:

Oh, I've always been a mind reader, Chuck. I also have ESP powers, and have sent most of my annoying neighbours to "the cornfield" with them. Or maybe not.
  6:51am
Fumanchu:

Peking Opera Singer as lead vocals
  6:53am
Dave B:

and a wall of Vuvuzelas. please...
  6:53am
Caryn:

I really think we have a great orchestra here, what with all the suggestions. First live performance at next year's H&M Sinfonia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53am
Meghan:

oof..... that sounds miserable! worse than our singing!
  6:54am
Bruce Willis:

and a kazoo solo~
  6:54am
Chuck:

It would be really cool to be able to make annoying people just go away...
  6:55am
Caryn:

Let's face it, if a band like that would ever make a record, WFMU DJs would be all over it, playing it in heavy rotation while it's in the new bin.
  6:56am
Dave B:

they sorta did:

http://www.myspace.com/annoyinginstrumentorchestra
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56am
Meghan:

hahahaha..... Caryn, sadly I can't argue with that! (I couldn't do it, but we all know Ken would be drawn to it like a magnet!)
  6:58am
Caryn:

Well, if the song titles would happen to coincide with some themes of yours, then you might be inclined to give the record a spin too, Meghan.
  6:59am
Chuck:

It would certainly keep people awake, Dave! "WTF is that NOISE!" heheh...
  7:00am
Caryn:

It's interesting how few people just start something in these songs. Everyone is starting all over or starting again way more often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00am
Meghan:

oh... I will say I do a thorough dumping of bad music. I would most likely end up with it in my collection, but it would have to be like the 4th time to hit that theme before it got played....
  7:01am
Dave B:

Best not to forget Wendy Chambers and her Car Horn organ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHT8qbx260Q
  7:01am
Caryn:

Hey, just because the band roster is a bit unusual, it doesn't mean the music would automatically be bad! If that band managed to make all those instruments sound good together, you would have to give them a medal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04am
Meghan:

grrrr, I can't listen to it. Stupid computers don't have the updated Flash...
  7:04am
Caryn:

@Dave: somehow that reminds me of the time Top Gear played their theme song with car engine sounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArY9JkvFo5Q
  7:05am
Dave B:

She does star spangled banner in that piece, saving the AROOGAH horn for the end. I also have her doing New York, New York... very apropos.

@Caryn - here's the sheet music for the Vuvuzela section:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07am

oh i remember that Caryn!
  7:07am
Chuck:

Heavens. Disco yodeling with the annoying instrument band! What say yea?!
  7:08am

Musique Concrete...
  7:09am
Chuck:

I'm loving the warm weather myself, Meg!
  7:09am
fred von helsing:

Whoops, late to the jam. Damned Yanqui imperialist DST.
  7:09am
Caryn:

Speaking of strange instruments, I give you the organ of stuffed cat toys doing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow": http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/kent/hi/front_page/newsid_8995000/8995536.stm
I wonder if he was inspired by the mouse organ from Monty Python?
  7:11am
Chuck:

I like being able to keep the bay door to my shop open...
  7:12am
Caryn:

Happy anniversary, Meghan!
  7:13am

Ah: There it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13am

Thanks!
  7:14am
Dave B:

@Fred - actually it was a Kiwi thing...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time#History
  7:15am
Chuck:

Happy anniversary, Meghan! Has it really been that long?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16am
Meghan:

I know! Though in reality it's been longer, but the official part yes, 9 years
  7:17am
Caryn:

I somehow feel the cat organ man illustrates a big difference between the UK and the US. In the US, he might get a lot of web hits and that would be it. In the UK, he gets invited to Clarence House to perform for the royals. I'd love to see a US president invite someone to the White House to perform on a car horn organ or something.
  7:18am
Dave B:

@ Meghan and Jefff - from Fred and Barney:

  7:18am
Chuck:

Politicians in this country aren't that edgy unfortunately, Caryn...
  7:19am
Caryn:

What I'm saying is: the UK culture has more of a penchant for the eccentric, and that is a good quality to have. WFMU clearly has it too.
  7:20am
Caryn:

@Chuck: I know. Hearing Romney's Spotify playlist played here a few days ago proved that. Safe, middle-of-the-road stuff all the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21am
Meghan:

Caryn, the UK knows how to laugh at itself..... we don't here. I just hold my face in the palm of my hands at half the country (maybe more than half)... The stupidity of these bible beating freak shows kills me
  7:22am
Dave B:

@Caryn - once Dwayne Allazondo Mountain Dew Herbert Comacho is elected, maybe....
  7:23am
dirty old man:

This set isn't "classic rock", it IS rock.
  7:24am
Chuck:

The scary part is that so many douche bags go for their line of crap, Meg.
  7:25am
Dave B:

Atomic Rooster for the win!
  7:25am
fred von helsing:

"official part" = "not living in sin"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25am
Meghan:

I am just amazed that we seem to be regressing
  7:26am
Jay/ London:

yes caryn the UK is just full of people doing odd things lol
  7:26am
Dave B:

"Idiocracy" is slowly becoming a reality.
  7:27am
Caryn:

Yeah, Meghan, I love the latest GOP combo: single parenthood is child abuse, and if your spouse hits you and the kids, you should stay in the marriage and try to "rekindle the romance" of your early years together... Yeah, that'll solve the problem. And of course, the actual beating of you and the kids is a lesser abuse than daring to raise a child alone.
  7:27am
Chuck:

But what do I know? I'm just an "elitist" college grad...
  7:27am
Magda:

It's a theme park, were not progressive like the modern world. It makes sense that we are regressive. Morning Everyone.
  7:30am
Dave B:

Howdy Magda
  7:31am
Chuck:

At least the right wing gives lots of fuel to the stand up comedians...
  7:32am
Magda:

Howdy Dave. Did I just miss the boat on all the comments? I think I just didn't start thinks off too good.
  7:32am
Chuck:

How can you not make fun of the insane garbage they say?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34am
Meghan:

Mommy Magda! Hello Hello!!
  7:34am
Caryn:

Oh how true, Chuck. I also loved how Letterman said on his show that he was going to endorse Santorum for president just because he was looking forward to the stream of dumbass statements to come from him as a candidate. (Naturally, Letterman followed that with "Of course, he doesn't have a chance in hell. But still...")
  7:37am
Magda:

Radio Talk Show host Randi Rhodes had a great quote about the right wing view point...."It's always save the fetus, kill the human". Comedy gold = source material must be hypocritical.
  7:37am
Chuck:

You should also check out "Real Time with Bill Maher" if you don't already, Caryn! Freakin' hilarious! Bill can slice and dice...
  7:38am
Magda:

Morning Meghan. I need coffee.
  7:39am
Chuck:

Yay! TMBG!
  7:39am
Andrew Waterloo:

I found a blog last night that attacked Sandra Fluke for having a rich Jewish boyfriend Like really? Can you not listen to her testimony and actually talk about that? Of course there's also the semantics of whether or not she was really speaking before congress.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39am
Meghan:

I second Bill Maher.... though I fall asleep watching it most of the time. His show is great
  7:40am
Nathan:

Anyone remember when They Might Be Giants used to have a phone number with an answering machine message with a new song every day/week... ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40am
Meghan:

I do!!!
  7:41am
Caryn:

@Chuck: yeah, Maher is on my list of "watch online" talk shows along with Stewart, Colbert & Ferguson. Right now, we only get Letterman and Conan on tv over here. Used to get Leno and Kimmel too. But nothing else :(
  7:41am
Nathan:

Somehow, I knew you would Meghan!
  7:42am
Chuck:

They've got Bill on the "On Demand" menu, Meg. Watch it anytime you want...
  7:42am
Nathan:

I think Bill Maher can be a bit of a prick... but that's just an opinion.
  7:42am
Dave B:

Pre internet Nathan. But yeah that was good...

There is always "Callin' Oates"

http://callinoates.com/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43am
Meghan:

hehe.... I used to call it. One of my friends back in college was a die hard fan, so he told me about it....

Chuck, they are always so late on posting it.
  7:44am
Chuck:

And the right wingers aren't pricks, Nathan? They do make me both cringe and laugh though...
  7:44am
Dave B:

pretty complete list of Dial A Songs...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46am
Meghan:

Maher is a prick.... but he's a good poker to the guests.... and I like that he has the other side's opinions there. It's nice to hear the crazy straight from there own mouth, where one can follow up
  7:47am
Chuck:

Anything that comes out of Santorum's mouth just makes me go, "WTF!!!"
  7:48am
Nathan:

@Chuck You've made the mistake of extrapolating my dislike for Maher into the fact that I might think the right wingers are alright. They're total pricks and unfunny ones at that. Doesn't make it right (or left), either way. Just sayin'.
  7:49am
Dave B:

I hate politics. And sports.
  7:49am
Caryn:

It's ridiculous (but also maddening and sad) that almost all the anti-Fluke statements make it clear that they've never seen or read a transcript of her testimony (I mean from ordinary folk online commenters, not GOP pundits who know what she said but try to spin the conversation into the bushes). They just regurgitate what O'Reilly or Limbaugh or some other pundit said on their show, not what her actual statement was about. And that's the worrying part: the complete sheep-like following of what someone tells you to think. If they saw her testimony and disagreed with the actual things she said, fine. But it seems in most situations, there is no research into what an actual issue or policy is about, just "what that one guy said the issue is about". But that also illustrates a strength of the GOP and a weakness of the Dems: the ability to come up with easy-to-remember catchphrases and names for things, that you then get into the common vernacular by having your people repeat it in the media. The Dems don't have the hang of it, and need to learn.
  7:50am
Caryn:

Sorry for the long rant, BTW.
  7:50am
Nathan:

@Dave B Isn't the internet amazing... ?
  7:50am
Chuck:

Apologies, Nathan. No slight intended. I'm just sayin' too...
  7:51am
Nathan:

@Caryn You're totally right. But perhaps for the Dem's that's a strength, it's an example of self-criticism that's sorely lacking with the GOP.
  7:52am
Dave B:

Nathan - it kinda is... but at the same time it can ruin the thrill of discovery...
  7:52am
Nathan:

@Chuck Nae worries!
  7:53am
Jay/ London:

we like silly over here Meghan :)
  7:54am
Nathan:

@Dave B: or the mental retention that having to work for your information usually brings. But oh well...
  7:54am
dirty old man:

Hello, the lone Republican is now checking in, but without comment.
  7:54am
Caryn:

@Nathan: I'm not saying that the Democrats should become such a load of reality-intolerant lemmings as the GOP seems to be nowadays. But in simple things, like the naming of key legislation and programs and talking points, I wish they'd learn from the GOP how you come up with a catchy, evocative name you can sell to the public, instead of a bureaucratic word soup no-one is gonna remember in 15 minutes time, let alone years from now.

Chuck:

That's why we all listen to UTP, Jay!
  7:55am
Nathan:

@Meghan: I'm anticipating Billy Joel 'We didn't start the fire' next...
  7:55am
Jay/ London:

i saw this band in my local pub not so long ago very good band to see in a small place :) just love this band !!!

Nathan.... I just can't do it...... tooooooo painful!
  7:56am
Parq:

Ah, I love the sound of Tiger Lilies in the morning. I notice I haven't missed the Jam -- or are you skipping that one as too obvious?
  7:57am
Nathan:

@Caryn Part of it is the psychological profile of most liberals. We're just too damn understanding of other folks POV's sometimes without being blindly militant.
  7:57am
Caryn:

I always feel like Martyn Jacques' singing voice sounds totally like Dame Edna. I always have to go "is this Dame Edna or The Tiger Lillies?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58am
Meghan:

DOM- your aren't a Republican... you're a contradictian
  7:58am
Jay/ London:

the tiger lilies must find where they are plying next
  7:58am
Nathan:

@Meghan What! That's a great song... sort've. It's certainly not Rush..
  7:59am
Andrew Waterloo:

The problem with the Dems is that they're always trying to offend nobody. They never truly champion progressive issues. That's where the republicans win. Is they champion an issue until they have the support.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59am
Meghan:

hehehe..... Billy Joel has been a punch line of some jokes at work lately....
  8:00am
Chuck:

Uh oh, Nathan brought up the "R" word...
  8:00am
PKNY:

Good call on going w/ the FNM version. Mike Patton is that dude.
  8:01am
fred von helsing:

Santorum et al. are all would-be mullahs so let's call the bastards out on it. Compare them to OBL or the Iranians and make it stick, and the bastards are sure to go off the deep end => good guys win
  8:01am
Dave B:

K. I gotta check out early. I'd rather debate the validity of Rush then the Dem/Rep crap, but work awaits...
  8:01am
Caryn:

Exactly, Andrew. Sometimes you need to play offence instead of constant defence, because with an "only defence" strategy, you're always going to lose, unless the other team is so inept they keep making own goals all the time.
  8:02am
Nathan:

Part of championing a progressive issue at its heart is trying something new and that has the potential to fail.... so it's tough to be completely 100% sure about it and rightly so.
  8:02am
Nathan:

@Meghan Ken did play Lana Del Ray yesterday.. I'm just sayin'.
  8:03am
Chuck:

Ta, DB!
  8:05am
Andrew Waterloo:

I think I'm still living through a Mike Patton overload
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am
Meghan:

THANK YOU Andrew...... that name was NOT coming to me what so ever!
  8:08am
Chuck:

Actually, folks, the biggest problem in American politics is the two party system. You only get a choice between bad and worse...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09am
Meghan:

Ken also played the metallica/lou reed..... just sayin...
  8:10am
Nathan:

He's played that quite a bit actually.. but he's a bit of a trickster like that always makin' trouble.
  8:10am
Elwyn:

Hey everyone!

I hope you have fresh fruit cups. Last week's were spiked by LSD!
  8:11am
Deepak:

'Start me up' could have easily been the Blondie's version, now that would have made me happy. Great show.
  8:12am
Nathan:

@Chuck I'd have to agree. A 3rd party would involve currying favour and therefore compromises to get votes to pass laws. Better than the current stalemate. But the 3rd party would have to be fairly sizeable.
  8:12am
Cheri Pi:

Meghan, this show is some of your best work.
  8:14am
Chuck:

Agree, Nathan. History has had as many as six parties vying for the presidency. We sorely need some fresh ideas...
  8:15am
Deepak:

I'll have to schedule my workouts early in the morning, always miss atleast 90min of (6-9) shows.
  8:15am
Caryn:

Yeah, the current US system is less "the lesser of 2 evils" and more "the evil of 2 lessers".
  8:16am
Elwyn:

Better than Narduar?
  8:18am
fred von helsing:

the simple fix is single transferable vote (STV). then you can vote for a third or fourth party without "throwing your vote away".
