Chop Scott! I love it when people are painting/fixing/building with the radio on. What's on the menu tonight?

Hey, Minnesota Jeff! Have greatly enjoyed your year of playlist animations. Will they continue, I wonder??

Fennel sausages with squash, cooked down with carmelized onions and garlic. Maybe over pasta, or a straight up with a heavy dusting of parma reggio.
Gotta go stir...
Avatar 12:24am
Joe McG:

Wow. Had me at carmelized onions.
  12:27am
Destroit:

Hi Joe. Chop Scott, I'm gonna mug you and take your food. And I'll eat the food with marmalade!
  12:28am
Marmalade Kitty:

those disco type tunes really take me back to being about 3 or 4 years old!! weird and dreamy
  12:30am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Been listening to WMFU on & off for most of today. Finally commenting on the nice songs I've heard all day long.

Marmalade Kitty:

toss in a little white wine with the sizzling sausages, Chop!

Cool, Ken! On behalf of everybody, I say thanks for listening! @Kitty: Dreamy disco!

i'm pretty sure marmalade kitty's right on this one. indian popular music has lapped the rest of the world so many times it could spend the next few centuries just running in the opposite direction and still finish first.

Oh, that's good Joe. Brannigan might be appropriate.
  1:04am
12539:

Joe, you don't fool me. We all know that Evan Funk Davies is "the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU."
  1:04am
DJKurtG:

nick gilder! i tuned in just the frack in time!

This song is about a child that was set of fire, right? Grim stuff, Nick Glider.

DJ Kurt! If you missed it, Kurt did a great show yesterday featuring other DJs premiums.
Avatar 1:10am
Joe McG:

@12539: I'll give Evan the Nick Gilder thing, but he was pretty late on the Hot Chocolate bus.
  1:11am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Joe! You've just become Nick Gilder's biggest champion on radio in 30 something years!
Avatar 1:12am
Joe McG:

@Matt: There's some dispute about that. I do own 3 Nick Gilder albums, but I'm not sure I'm THAT proud of it!
  1:14am
DJKurtG:

thanks joe. and BE PROUD!
  1:14am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: This reminds me of an earlier comment I made, that on the one hand you and Evan would make great co-hosts, being 70s DJs. On the other hand, you might be at each other's throats, screaming about whether Jo Jo Gunne or solo Jay Ferguson was better! :)
Avatar 1:16am
Joe McG:

Oh, Jo Jo Gunne, no question!
  1:18am
Matt from Springfield:

I oughta send you the "Glitter From The Litter Bin" comp if you don't have it already...!
  1:19am
Minnesota Jeff:

I thought they were saying "We had the TV on the bed" before I looked at the Track title. I was wondering how large of a 1981 TV was sitting in there with them.
Avatar 1:20am
Joe McG:

I like the idea of the guy in bed with his TV. I wonder who'd be on it?
  1:21am
Matt from Springfield:

Carson, Midnight Special, Tomorrow Show, not too many options in '81! If BBC -- they may already have closed down!
  1:22am
Minnesota Jeff:

They were probably watching Luke & Laura's wedding.
  1:23am
Ken From Hyde Park:

If a late Saturday night, they may have had on USA network. If they had cable.
  1:24am
DJKurtG:

metallica sound like total wusses on this track!
  1:26am
Matt from Springfield:

@Kurt: Though it sounds a whole lot better than Metallica's most recent album! I wonder who played with Lou Reed before them....
  1:29am
Minnesota Jeff:

Was the Raven the last Lou album before Lulu? On the Raven he had all sorts of random people.
  1:31am
Mike Sin:

Awesome show, Joe! Listened to quite a lot driving back to Jersey from Brooklyn... Had a drumming gig.
  1:32am
DJKurtG:

matt: totes. lulu is pretty unbearable. altho brian turner maintains it's not the worst metallica album. & hi mn gif!
  1:32am
Destroit:

Hockey on my tv, wedding present is appreciated.
  1:33am
DJKurtG:

joe! unseat evan funk!
  1:35am
Minnesota Jeff:

Hey, Kurt! Oh and by the way, Lulu is one of my favorite albums from last year. No Foolin!
  1:35am
Minnesota Jeff:

Destroit: Which game are you watching?
  1:36am
Destroit:

Single file, ok. Thanks joe.
Avatar 1:37am
Joe McG:

@Mike Sin: I saw the listing! Hope you had a great time! @Kurt: Unseat the Funk? Nevah! As for Minnesota Jeff, he's clearly drunk.
  1:38am
12539:

Sure you know nothing about Painter, Joe. They're Canadian! And Evan Funk Davies has a Canadian premium this year...hmm.
  1:38am
Matt from Springfield:

I'm clearly drunk too, yet I'm in no hurry to get Lulu, considering other's opinions on it. Most of the Metallica I like is their early, pre-Black Album stuff anyway--is there any improvement when working with Mr. Reed?
Avatar 1:39am
Joe McG:

Ha ha ha! I sure hope it has "West Coast Woman" on it! (sly smile)
  1:40am
Destroit:

@ jeff: leafs v. Vancouver, replay on CBC.
  1:40am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, instrumental "Rock Your Baby", with only The SUNSHINE Band!!
  1:41am
Wikipedia on "Rock Your Baby":

The backing track for the record had been recorded in 45 minutes as a demo, and featured guitarist Jerome Smith (June 18, 1953 – July 28, 2000) of KC and the Sunshine Band. The track was not originally intended for McCrae, but he happened to be in the studio, added a vocal, and the resultant combination of infectious rhythm and falsetto vocals made it a hit.
  1:42am
Destroit:

Big giant fucking hug to Matt, love that guy! :)
  1:42am
Kurt from Springfield:

mn gif, what?!?
matt: metallica sound incapable of playing midtempo rock and roll. and what's worse, lou reed sounds like lou reed!
Avatar 1:42am
Joe McG:

I love the dueling trumpets at the end of that version!
  1:42am
Minnesota Jeff:

Matt: I think most people consider Lou to be the worst part of Lulu, then second is when ever James sings back up. On some tracks its arguable that its Metallica at their heaviest.
  1:44am
Kurt from Springfield:

+ lars sounds like a sloth on too much cough syrup
  1:44am
Matt from Springfield:

@Destroit: Um, okay, great! (bgf hug!) :)
@MN Jeff: All I gotta do is make an instro version of their tracks then!
  1:45am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Is this song related to the one from The Fixx? Or are they not the same song?
Avatar 1:46am
Joe McG:

Did I hear you say you would do a Dory Previn set, if so, when. Thanks.

I love Sister Betty Wright!
Some import soul trivia--remember Beyonce's "Upgrade" song for that commercial, that horns riff was stolen from a Betty Wright song that goes "Women can't do/ What the guys do..../ And still be a lady"

@Jeff: Nick Mason it says here. Wasn't he the drummer? (I'm a Floyd stoop.)
  1:54am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey pierre! Too bad he's not on right now! :)
This is a great pop single though, lovin' it!
  1:54am
Matt from Springfield:

Yes, Nick was the drummer. He's still around too.
  1:54am
G:

Set note: Betty Wright discovered George McCrae back in 1967, when both were young singers in Miami. McCrae's biggest success was doing the vocal on Rock Me Baby.

Coincidental playlist sequencing? You be the judge.

Synchronicity, Destroit. We are having fennel sausage casserole, CE SOIR.
Gotta check for eggs soon, it's only seven.
  2:03am

@G: Europe is a lifesaver for FMU playlists; sometimes on Julie's show from 3-6 there's me, and no one else from the Eastern Time Zone! Dave B from Upstate if I'm lucky!
  2:04am
Brian en Angleterre:

Hey T-Zero, how's it hangin'
  2:05am

Heh, Yeah. Sorry, Matt. I still haven't worked out a sleep pattern that let's me listen to Julie live. And this week I even missed Bill Mac.

Loose and sweaty, Brina. lol

No worries, T-Zero! :)
  2:11am
Matt from Springfield:

The last few years I've contributed for YLT to play a song--I need to think of a good song for them to play this year. Last time I requested The Church's "The Unguarded Moment", "Happy Jack" alternate. I HEARD them playing The Unguarded Moment in the background, but they ended up playing Happy Jack. It's a great song, but I wish they had played The Church!!
  2:12am

The Lady with the Braid?

@Brian: I think I'm going to play that one!
  2:17am
Brian en Angleterre:

Nice Joe, a captivating song.
Avatar 2:21am
Joe McG:

@Matt: That's great, you got YLT to do your tune. I got lucky one year, too, many many years ago. "Jesus" by VU!
  2:22am
Matt from Springfield:

Great great great great GREAT song! Great rhymes and story from Esther--and extra points for the "altar rail", back when they had those rails!
  2:24am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Oh, wonderful choice! VU, that's a good choice--they have songs that are not too famous, but likely for YLT to know.

So sad, that I just found out about Dory Previn after her passing now :(
Avatar 2:26am
Joe McG:

She was 86, though--a pretty long life by most estimates.

Ignorance is bliss, and FMU has broken my ignorance of great artists, sometimes in a tribute when I wish I could have appreciated them in their lifetimes.
