Listener comments!

  9:04pm
12539:

The longsuffering Tamar herself!
Will it be "pop" this evening?
  9:05pm
Tamar:

So far, so pop, no?
  9:06pm
Elwyn:

This song may be the greatest oddity i have ever heard even on WFMU.
  9:06pm
12539:

Indeed.
  9:07pm
Elwyn:

Does anyone else remember those awesome scifi ship books of the 70s and 80s?
The cover reminds me of those:

  9:19pm
tomB:

Tamar puts the power back into power pop!
  9:28pm
Ike:

Really enjoying this first set. Rock on.
  9:40pm
Bill W:

Revenge of the Athenians.
  9:41pm
Nordstrom:

I love this tune. The break betrays their love of the minutemen.
  10:19pm
some other guy:

I see, it's my least favorite song that sounds just like this, followed by my favorite song that sounds just like this, followed by the same song. I guess I'm pretty into that. Can I request a thing?
  10:21pm
some other guy:

or just try to play sloopy until 11, that would be amazing.
  10:23pm
PB:

Play the original, it's the best version (by far).Who did the original, the McCoys?
  10:24pm
Rob from Maryland:

Yummy Yummy Yummy ... in French! Wow. I wish I still had my Ohio Express album.
  10:24pm
Rob from Maryland:

PB, yes, I believe it is The McCoys.
  10:25pm
Rob from Maryland:

Psyched me out, I forgot how much this Cars song opens like the Ohio Express!
  10:25pm
Tamar:

I did think about an hour of Sloopy, but I am mystified by its popularity. Yes, McCoys original, or at least the original hit.
  10:26pm
molerat:

Clever set. Me like.
  10:27pm
Rob from Maryland:

One more comment, if only I'd been listening a few minutes earlier, I would have heard the Supremes doing Sloopy. I would have loved to hear that.
  10:34pm
glenn:

hang on sloopy is the mccoys, and i believe rick derringer is the mastermind behind it.
  10:34pm
PB:

You could probably do a whole week's worth of covers of the Beatles' Yesterday. That would be a fate worse than death.
  10:36pm
G:

Let's pretend we did it yesterday and leave it at that! :-)
  10:36pm
some other guy:

Is it weird that this era of Madonna just makes me want Chin Chin?
  10:37pm
PB:

@glenn, AMG says Derringer played lead guitar and sang on Hang on Sloopy.
  10:38pm
Purepopfornowpeople:

I own over two dozen covers of Ca Plane Pour Moi. Just sayin'
  10:40pm
Tamar:

I didn't even know there were 12 covers of Ca Plane Pour Moi!
  10:40pm
glenn:

i have seen richard thompson on more than one occasion perform ca plane pour moi as an encore.
  10:40pm
PB:

Tamar, my recollection is that it was a very, very cynical attempt by Klaatu's record company to spur interest in the band.
  10:41pm
PB:

Didn't work too well, did it?
  10:44pm
glenn:

one of the guys from klaatu owns a very successful roofing company in toronto, and the guy who wrote calling occupants (john woloschuk) was my bookkeeper.
  10:44pm
Record Company Accountant:

It was not such a bad tax writeoff.
  10:51pm
Rob from Maryland:

From the wikipedia page about the song "Hang On Sloopy": "It was written by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell and is named for singer Dorothy Sloop, who used the name "Sloopy" on stage."
  10:51pm
Slazenger:

Your doin a great job I liked the cars song
  10:52pm
PB:

Am I losing my mind or have we already heard this set tonight? I think you are having some technical problems.
  10:53pm
Slazenger:

That Wallgreens 'll do it every time
  10:53pm
Tamar:

What are you hearing?
  10:54pm
PB:

I heard the first 3 tracks from the second set for a second time. Maybe it's just my computer, I don't know.
  10:56pm
Tamar:

Weirdness! It's the interplanetary craft intrusion, perhaps. Anyone else hearing loops of the show?
  10:57pm
axlotl:

Loved the Cars transition. re: ruby right, that's why I never take my girlfriend to Wallgreens.
  10:57pm
some other guy:

Why did she go to Sears? 2nd job? My heart was broken at K-mart once, but I didn't go to Montgomery Ward afterward.
  11:02pm
PB:

Sorry about that, I guess it was just my computer.
  11:09pm
tomB:

A great tribute from Syd to Amy Rigby with a secondary tribute to Roger McGuinn's Chestnut Mare narration? And is that RT or a tribute to RT?
  11:09pm
Betsy p:

You absolutely made my WEEK! I loved the set, they are my old 45s (my age), But DAVID CANARY!!!!! u have no idea how heartBroken I am this week, but u just made it better
  11:11pm
Slazenger:

  11:18pm
tomB:

I've been trying to buy this Petra Hayden CD for ten years. Where is it?
  11:19pm
Slazenger:

Waaa waaa waa waaaa
  11:19pm
Slazenger:

CONEY!!!!!!
  11:19pm
Slazenger:

In four part harmony!
  11:20pm
12539:

@tomB, Amazon has it, so it shouldn't be hard to find.
  11:22pm
Slazenger:

Very strange. I hear Michael Jackson in the foreground.
  11:23pm
Slazenger:

Furnish shit?
  11:26pm
FWIW:

One member of the Hillside Singers later created the "Music of Your Life" radio format
  11:26pm
Slazenger:

I hate that temple block. It trivializes the song.
  11:32pm
tomB:

@12539 well I may have to break down &make my 1st order from Amz. Or, I can hold out till FMU's record fair!
  11:35pm
12539:

@tomB, well, you could order it directly from http://www.bar-none.com/store.php if you feel better about that. Petra's own site links to Amazon. But the point is, it's not out of print.
  11:36pm
Parq:

Just getting on the puter, but have been lucky enough to catch most of the show. Just tremendous; thanks for all the great little surprises.
  11:43pm
Little Fyodor:

That Coke song actually was a commercial first and then they took out the Coke part to release it commercially. Heh.
  11:50pm
FWIW:

@Little Fyodor: Yeah, and the Coke song was originally written by the ad agency for the New Seekers, who said they didn't have time to do it. But after a cobbled-together Hillside Singers had such success with the Coke song in the US, the New Seekers ended up doing a hit 45 in the UK, that also charted well back in the US. I recall both versions because I moved from the US to the UK in 1971, right between the American hit and the British one...
  11:50pm
david:

This Girl's In Love With You, that's the name of this song. What a great rendition.
  11:55pm
12539:

Good show, Tamar. And watch out for that Inflated Squirrel guy - he always gives Pseu a hard time at the transitional moment.
  11:56pm
FWIW:

Who gives who a hard time in those transitions?
  11:57pm
12539:

(@FWIW: irony)

Please stop all that @shit. Nice nice show Tamar. Pop rules, OK.
  12:03am
Listener John:

I really loved the music you played tonight! Thank you, Tamar.
  12:03am
FWIW:

It's the Bickersons
  12:06am
PiLA:

it's ok, I hate my wife too
  12:06am
some other guy:

@pulp, seriously, why didn't you bookend the album with "disco 2000" and "common people"? I mean, two songs, two themes, same attitude, same tune pretty much, same exact vocal effort and pattern... right?
  12:07am
FWIW:

it's put on, they're having fun. is that clear without any @ ?
  12:08am
@:
