Options October 14, 2010: w/ Creative Commons' Eric Steuer [11a.m.]

At 11am ET, Eric Steuer from Creative Commons calls in to talk about the licenses that facilitate sharing, openness and innovation everywhere from The White House to Al Jazeera to Wikipedia to right here on the Free Music Archive.

Earlier this week, CBC Radio revealed that they will stop using Creative Commons music -- once a prominent feature of programs like Spark -- due to the usage restrictions of CC's more popular noncommercial licenses. A virtual riot ensued.

To gain a better understanding of the situation, we'll crack open CC's recent Study of How the Online Population Understands “Noncommercial Use”  and discuss how this might play into the future of Creative Commons. Speaking of The Future, the nonprofit organization is currently in the midst of their Superhero campaign.

Jason, was that Cairo antique shop (that you plundered) under the fly-over on the island Zamelik?

The CBC creative commons controversy brings to mind a famous (if more localized) CBC-related incident documented on the FMU blog: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2005/04/she_be_she_stri.html

  11:46am jdalton:

Thanks for the CC insights Jason & Eric. It helped sort out some of the grey areas for me w/CC licenses. Great points about how so much great material (audio, visual & data) has become visible and available simply because of the introduction of CC licensing.
  11:52am Parq:

I am glad you addressed the tension that sometimes arises between the wishes of artists and the expectations of free-information advocates. It's worth remembering that this is still capitalism, and even non-mainstream artists gotta make a living.
