Tinariwen live at the Bell House (plus a South African set in honor of the World Cup)

A captivating two hour set by the fabulous hypnotic, bluesy, electric Sahara Desert Tuareg guitar band Tinariwen recorded by our illustrious technical guru Irene Trudel (with assistant Alex Yockey) live at the Bell House in Gowanus, Brooklyn on February 19, 2010. (Irene also recorded the opening band Fool's Gold; their set will be aired later this summer.)

Tinariwen will be on the road again in North America this summer, including a big show on Sunday afternoon June 26 at Central Park Summerstage on an amazing bill with Syria's Omar Souleyman and American Africa-philes Toubab Krewe - plus a return engagement at the comparatively more intimate Bell House on Sunday night June 27.

Special thanks to my sidekick Katie Gentile for additional help on the remote, and all the folks at Bell House, Eye For Talent, Rock Paper Scissors, Tinariwen's label World Village, and of course Tinariwen.

Tinariwen's upcoming North American tour dates are here.

Good morning Pinky!
  6:19pm Pinky Aoki:

I'm pretty good and it's little bit cold `cause it's early in the morning here in Japan.
Great that hearing from you, my friend!!
  6:21pm Mebob:

Hiyee :) Footie! I thought the US played very well! lots of chances for both sides that no one was able to finish.. a fair result x
  6:47pm cheri:

hiya rob--great show so far,,,btw got any adivce for an aging & muturing commenteer??
  6:49pm Your DJ:

Thanks and well, it's kind of smooth sailing from here because the Tinariwen live concert set will run for another hour and 45 minutes! What kind of advice exactly - musical advice - ?
  6:51pm cheri:

any kind of adivce,,rob,,
  7:00pm Your DJ:

Well, asking for advice by me... be careful what you wish for... but, if you, like me, are intrigued by the concept of a tuna pizza crepe, I suggest you head for my favorite place in NJ, the Mitsuwa Japanese mall in Edgewater. They have a Japanese style sweet and savory crepe stand set up for the next few days there - with some very specifically Japanese concoctions! That's my dining suggestion for the day...
  7:34pm Lu:

I had a wild adventure crossing the Sahara Desert many years ago traveling with Touareg caravan. it was a difficult trip, sand storms, break downs and sand pits on the piste, touareg rebels with ak47, slaughtering a goat, finally making it across Algeria to Bamako. The sound of the music we encountered along the way is forever embedded in my heart- it takes me right back there to that amazing land.
  8:15pm Mebob:

In the Tinariwen photograph, the dude 5th from left looks like Zappa/Lynott..?
  8:17pm Mebob:

..Is that fair? Or do I need glasses..?
  8:20pm Your DJ:

That's the leader of Tinariwen, Ibrahim Ag Alhabib. And, well, if there is a Tuareg Zappa, he's the guy! We were very happy because he played this gig; he's skipped some of their US tours.
  8:27pm dres:
