I missed you all so much - thanks to DAvid S for doing the show last week - and today we have a special guest - Fletcher hanks expert and cartoonist himself -Paul Karasik 11 am
  9:06am annie:

bw- gm!
  9:07am Joe Steele:

I found myself perusing Paul's website last Thursday. I'm into Fletcher Hanks now and it's 100% BW's fault.
  9:13am anyone to everyone:

i rather have the moon
  9:14am bw:

  9:18am anyone to everyone:

i now wish i lived in montreal
  9:19am annie:

  9:19am thecleef:

papa m = good start to the day
  9:19am Parq:

Sample Fletch title from his Wikipedia bio: "The Dashing, Slashing Adventure of the Great Solinoor Diamond" - well, oh yeah!
  9:24am Quintum physics:

You go inside the cage?
Cage goes in the water?
You go in the water?
Shark's in the water, our shark.

  9:30am Duke:

Saurian women with frickin' lasers on their heads!
  9:32am "Joe" Steele:

On every other planet, everyone looks exactly the same. Earth seems to be the only diverse one in the bunch.
  9:34am annie:

BW- your show always seems to have a deliciously surreal feeling, one which is extremely pleasant.
  9:40am anyone to everyone:

space and dianna have been caught already?!?!? what the? who the?
  9:40am the four hands cook:

hi BW!
that's a good introduction before a getaway to the sea!
  9:41am "Joe" Steele:

They didn't even reach their destination. They should really just stay out of space.

Leopard woamen swarmed my Hyundai once, I managed to avoid capture.
  9:42am PMD:

I used to be a leopard woman but took a shower and lost my spots.
  9:43am anyone to joe steele:

  9:43am dc pat:

  9:46am "Joe" Steele:

It looks like "Space's" um...shuttle has abs of it's own.
  9:47am Cecile:

I like mobster/true crime books, but I have to take loads of breaks from them or it becomes numbing.
  9:48am dc pat:

  9:49am bw:

  9:53am PMD:

Cecile - many happy felicidades!
  9:54am AnAnonymousParty:

Mornin' "all".
  9:55am annie:

cecile, you'll get a kick out of this: Isa has been put in her crate each night when it's "time for bed" and she has been pretty good about it overall. well last night i was out for dinner and put her there to prevent her from tearing the house apart. i got back and she had removed herself and greeted me joyfully. well, when it was "time for bed" i went in and left her cage door open so she could climb in like she usually does. hehe.. she refused, so i just let her be. ten minutes later she went in; i left the door open.. she stayed in there all night! with the door open! hehe
  9:57am dc pat:

OH GOD, NO! Not ROBOT scientists!!
  9:57am Cecile:

Aw, bw, I'm sorry.
There was some food there that made me cry, so delicious.

My birthday; was yesterday. I had a nice weekend, Saturday was dinner at the 112 (best place in Minneapolis for my budget), a show by Demetri Martin. Sunday was UP and my new favorite pizza in town - Black Sheep. They use a coal oven. Nom.

thank you for the wonderful wishes!

Annie, heh, your Isa cracks me up! She's a good girl...evenutually.
  9:58am AnAnonymousParty:

"Yet another anal probe", "Space" sighed.
  9:58am Robot Scientists:

the humans are dead. once again without emotion.
  9:58am still b/p:

Space already seems to have a huge puckered cleft/scar from sternum to scrotal zone. Diana seems to have been Tased to a physically rapturous surrender.
  9:59am Cecile:

AAP, if you put "wistfully" at the end, it makes it even more funnier.
  10:01am AnAnonymousParty:

"Space" has been on the bad end of far too many anal probe attempts by aliens with limited understanding of human physiology for that, Cecile.
  10:02am annie:

they look like they're waiting for a bus, not getting ready to probe space.
  10:03am "Joe" Steele:

Dianna doesn't seem to be restrained in any manner.
  10:04am Cecile:

Yes, they haven't been gentle with him.
Perhaps Carol Queen needs to go into space.

heh. and that too.
  10:04am "Space":

If I had a nickel for every time I've said, "Uh, that's not my anus" . . .
  10:06am "Joe" Steele:

You always say, "Turn her into a leopard woman." Dr. Roboto, how about some creativity?
  10:10am bw:

joe I am rocking out on the joe steele awesome studio A CD rack - what do youwant to know about fletcher hanks?
  10:13am "Joe" Steele:

Holy crap a CD Rack shout out.

I'm actually just curious when the new black Stardust T-shirst are gonna be available.
  10:15am cs:

they have the tech to change her into a leopard women but still operate in a cave?
  10:15am Betty and Barney Hill:

  10:15am dc "pat":

yeah, I could sure use a stardust t--shirt....alls I have now are FMU t-shirts...
  10:16am AnAnonymousParty:

Carpe Dianna!
  10:16am dc "pat":

Betty?...and Bahney?....dunt dunt dunt dunt dunt....
  10:17am Cecile:

cs, batman still operates in a cave.
It's climate controlled, and you can have a really good wine cellar.
  10:18am "Joe" Steele:

I fully intend on getting these Fletcher Hanks books.
  10:19am Alien Robot Freaks:

Earth girls are cute. Let's play doctor with her.
  10:20am Dave Doom:

Hi Ben. This is Dave Lockgroove and Compass and Boston. Ben, I stopped listening to music about 6 years ago. I played sax in an afrobeat band in Montreal for a while, but didn't listen to music much. I stopped collecting and have this little faux-antique record player that I was going to give to a girlfriend, but she bought a cooler 80s record player first, so I kept it [we broke up shortly afterwards].

So I'm in NYC for many years and have this little record player and 4 records (one T Rex and a few classical) and sort of stopped listening to music. Occassionally I bought a few CDs from the Desi taxi eatery joint on Houston and 1st-ish, which were good.

So, I just moved to brooklyn. Have a nice flat with my girlfriend, and decided to flip on the radio to keep me company while I unloaded the dish washer. I assumed I'd listen to sports talk radio (always a mainstay for me) but actually that benny goodman orgy thing was still going on, didn't want to hear that, and rather than flip to AM I thought wtf I'd scroll up the dial.

I stopped when I heard the smog (I'm of course irate at this "Bill Callahan" bull as if his parents were better than he at naming him. I remember I had the weirdest encounter with him at the middle east one night, that's another story though) backing tracks before his voice came on.

Anyhow, I sort of sighed in my head hearing the drums nad horns and was like, yeah, I guess I should listen to this.

Then his voice came on, effectless and such.

I listened to the track. Expecting it to be an anomoly I was curious what would come next, coudl it possibly be something I liked as much?

Then you came on, a familiar voice flooding back old memories. It was such a treat to hear Ben Walker on my radio again, didn't realize you had moved to NYC from Boston etc. etc. The thrill of listening ot live radio broadcast by a DJ who's taste you "trust" is something I had been missing.

So I'm listening and its a treat to have you back dj-ing. I just placed my speakers in stereo in the new apt and its being effectively baptized by your set this le morning!

Very exciting.

Thanks again for 5 formative years introducing me to music in Boston and its good to hear our tastes still align.

What a surprising pleasure.
  10:20am annie:

hhmmm dianna seems to have lost her leggings along the way... hmmmm
  10:22am bw:

hi DAve Doom

good story!
  10:22am "Joe" Steele:

Mainly about Fletcher Hanks and question would be "What is your malfuncation?" but I think that's answered in one of the books.
  10:23am Comic Artist:

That's not a continuity slip. That's target-audience titillation.
  10:23am annie:

beautiful, what is this?
  10:24am AnAnonymousParty:

You can't wear leggings on a fully operational table, it would interfere with the horizontalling mechanism
  10:28am Cecile:

Dave Doom, that's so amazingly cool.
BW does do a beautiful show. Great way to start Mondays.
  10:28am bw:

i had a cd error annie
hope its clear now
  10:29am annie:

thx, bw. i got it written down.
  10:31am cs:

well sure with a "tremendous effort" i could break from those bonds too
  10:32am Cecile:

omg. I skated to this in 6th grade in a pink elephant costume
  10:32am still b/p:

With a tremendous effort AND a sharply confident dance move...
  10:33am Cecile:

I had pink sequins on my "ears"
  10:33am annie:

i'm gonna have to practice darting sometime. seems cool to elan so far forward like that and not fall.!
  10:35am AnAnonymousParty:

It takes tremendous effort, annie.
  10:35am still b/p:

Typo apropos for Mr. Go-Go, annie!
  10:36am annie:

does that come in a size 12?
  10:36am cs:

"the space darts" "the leopard women of venus" - im seeing band names throughout this strip
  10:37am Alien Robot Freaks:

This "Space" dude is a voyeur.
  10:37am "Joe" Steele:

I thought the transmitting belt was a bad thing. Shows what I know.
  10:39am "Joe" Steele:

Sure, punch the metal guy in the face, that'll totally hurt him more than you.
  10:39am Parq:

Joe, the deal seems to be that the belt is a bad thing if your arms are tied, because they can shuttle you around with it, but if you can get your arms free, you can use it to your advantage.
  10:40am Cecile:

it hurt his feelings.
  10:40am cs:

widmark is wicked cool in that one
  10:40am AnAnonymousParty:

"Space" punched with tremendous effort, and the robots have glass jaws.
  10:41am still b/p:

Album name: Surgery in the Cave of Grits.
  10:41am steven from wmfo:

Hello Ben-
don't know if you remember me...I'm friends w/ Peter C and Judy and Sandy and Linda P all from WZBC, yer ol stomping grounds. Tuned in here in Asheville, NC and enjoying yer show. A whole bunch of us just got kicked off WPVM here and they went and changed the programming....we are all bummed out but happy to have you and the crew available on line!!
great to hear you...
  10:42am Alien Robot Freaks:

Don't we get to have *any* fun. Sheesh.
  10:43am cs:

hey steven - i love ashville nc - whats that cool record store at the bottom of a hill in town
  10:44am bw:

hi stephen.. what is this reunion day!!
  10:44am dc "pat":

coufound it! I have a meeting at 11--can you move the interview to now?
  10:45am bw:

pat!!! tell the meeting people you have a bathroom emergency? or something like that?
  10:45am bw:

can't "space" inspire you to make something up?
  10:46am steven from wmfo:

well Static Age is there and the owner just had surgery and there was a benefit for his Hospital expenses. Before it was static it was Whizz records...do dem ring any bells? There's a new one in W. Ashevillle near my house called Harvest. They put on tons of great shows in our little corner, great to have em hear...really keeping it alive!
  10:47am dc "pat":

I guess with tremendous effort I could get out of it. Actually it's only 15 minutes so if you could stall for a bit...
  10:47am cs:

come on dc pat tell them its life or death
  10:48am "Joe" Steele:

If you happen to be using RealPlayer, you can pause it like a TiVo. (I think, I don't have a TiVo)
  10:48am dc "pat":

man, if Asheville was in the north, I'd move there in a second. Love that town and the mountains...
  10:49am PMD:

Obviously in space women don't wear bras.
  10:50am AnAnonymousParty:

No gravity in space.
  10:50am george:

PMD. not funny enough!! :))
  10:50am still b/p:

In space, no one can hear you sag.
  10:50am Parq:

Taken out of context, the panel accompanying the Benin track would resemble most of my pre-marriage Saturday nights.
  10:50am ume:

I'm curious: why did the Martian Central Brain need to be destroyed? Was it bad like the U.S. auto industry?
  10:50am bw:

  10:51am cs:

steven - whizz sounds right...i remember boxes and boxes of records. but then i havent been to nc for a few years now
  10:53am Cecile:

you can also pause the live stream on the flash player
  10:53am AnAnonymousParty:

While the robots are all down at Earl Scheib's getting their jaws touched-up.
  10:53am still b/p:

Speakin' a' rekkids, the vintage international samplings earlier today reminded me how sorely tempted I was by Yma Sumac's debut album at a record fair yesterday.
  10:56am bw:

pat - i am gonna start about 4 min late it turns out good luck with gettin out of meeting
  10:57am steven from wmfo:

whizz is online now if you wanna peruse
  10:58am Cheesy Prose:

I dash. I dart. Fear me.
  10:58am dc pat:

fuckin A! I'll talk real fast, thanks bw!
  11:00am bw:

ume - not sure???>?

they aren't there yet!!
  11:00am cs:

thanks for that steven
  11:08am dc "pat":

yes! back already!
  11:10am "Joe" Steele:

dc "pat" dashes out of the meeting cave and back into the WFMU chat cave.
  11:10am dc "pat":

I have Batman #19 at home--from 1942 I think.
  11:11am dc "pat":

it took tremendous effort
  11:13am Cecile:

Charles Schultz did the correpsondence course.
  11:15am Parq:

Set aside the space guys for a moment - the Dick Tracy strips from that era resemble a Cohen Brothers crime drama.
  11:16am Chronology:

Possibly vice versa, Parq!
  11:17am Cecile:

those dick tracys are addictive
a friend of mine had some compilations and they are completely engrossing. The movie was so disappointing.

Coen Brothers.
  11:18am "Joe" Steele:

And there's "Big Red" McLane who looks exactly like Stardust.
  11:18am annie:

dick tracy, mandrake the magician... i had to have em every day
  11:19am Saurians:

When do we get to eat them already?!?!?!?!
  11:19am Cecile:

Paul Bunyan!
Everyone loves Paul Bunyan!
  11:20am still b/p:

When I was about junior high age, my folks gave me a massive volume of Buck Rogers strips starting with the earliest. Don't know what became of it.
  11:20am Parq:

Chrono, no doubt. George Romero and Stephen King made clear their debt to the EC 50s horror comics with 1982's "Creepshow".
  11:20am Paul Bunyan:

What the Hell is so strange about Lumberjack stories?
  11:22am dc pat:

A drunken dick, huh? GREAT! I knew is was all going too perfectly.
  11:22am cs:

i have an uncle who drew cartoons in the military and he beat his wife and was a drunk - whats the deal?
  11:24am cs:

great interview bw
  11:24am dc "pat":

maybe it's some sort of innate frustration at not being a superhero who can torture bad guys.
  11:25am Paul Karasik:

Wait..."cs"...you have an uncle" drew cartoons in the military and he beat his wife and was a drunk..."
I must see his work. Contact me thru my website:
  11:25am annie:

i coulda been a cartoonists kid!! my dad drew the scariest shit..
  11:25am Parq:

God, folks, if we tried to make a complete list of people who made great art/entertainment but were horrible wastes of protoplasm as people, we'd be here all day. AA Milne was cold and distant with young Christopher, Rollie Dahl was a Nazi supporter, and those are just two EGs that leap to mind.
  11:26am Cecile:

Paul, this is amazing stuff, and I just pre-ordered your book on the Amazon.
  11:26am dc pat:

holy shit, I just saw that Harvey Pekar is coming to FMU--that should be good.
  11:27am cs:

we dont keep in touch with him ( but i can contact my aunt and see if she has any of his strips or can get them - i remember him showing them to me when i was a kid - ill investigate and get back to you
  11:28am Paul Karasik:

Thanks, Cecile! (love that name!)
  11:28am Cecile:

I love Harvey Pekar. He is a real inspiration to me.

Hey, does anyone know where I can find nice editions of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon?
  11:28am Cecile:

oh, thanks!
thanks for the great detective work!
  11:29am "Joe" Steele:

I've had a couple awful comics published in my college paper back in the day.
  11:29am Paul Karasik:

Thanks "cs"...don't forget! I gotta see that stuff!
  11:29am Cheesy Prose:

  11:29am annie:

at home i have boxes and boxes of comic books.. old ones, it seems. maybe fmu is a great place to get rid of em.. eh?
  11:30am "Space":

Let me grip your torso again. So we can get out.
  11:30am Cecile:

me too, Joe.
In fact, I illustrated Fun World Music Facts about 14 years ago. This was in the dawn of the Web.
  11:31am Cecile:

And my pen skills leave something to be desired.

  11:33am AnAnonymousParty:

This would be a fun video game, what, with all the dashing, jaw punching, tremendous effort and braless Diannas.
  11:33am Cecile:

nothing's stopping you from it, AAP
  11:33am cs:

i wont forget paul - it will be an interesting assignment for me.
  11:34am "Joe" Steele:

Mine were pretty much all done by computer. I don't think I have any files saved, but may possibly have some of the newspapers at home.
  11:35am doug from dc:

Given the author's reputation, these poor robots are in for a horrible fate.
  11:35am still b/p:

Mr. Karasik, ya gots to make some nice-sized reproductions of best, most classic and craziest Hanks panels for our walls. This crew here, I'm guessing, would be glad to vote for favorites.
  11:36am Cecile:

Yeah, get them printed on canvas...
  11:36am "Joe" Steele:

I must know where this head one is from:

  11:36am annie:

they can do brain surgery, and now they're "clumsy"??
  11:37am Yep:

How are the mighty fallen.
  11:38am AnAnonymousParty:

Typical specialists.
  11:39am paul Karasik:

1. I don't think that there are any primo collections of Flash Gordon, but there was a recent classy book of Alex Raymond's work that surely included some Flash Gordon work.

2. Even robots must suffer.

3. b/p: what walls are we talkin' about here? I would be happy to supply you with scans of primo Hanks panels.

4. The head shot comes from a comic book called "the Big Three" and appears in Volume 1: "I Shall Destroy all the Civilized Planets!"
  11:41am dc "pat":

alright! Wendy in the freakin HAUS!
  11:41am Cecile:

thanks, Paul.
Then those facsimiles my friend had must be worth a ton now. It was back in the early 80s. I will look out for that new book.
  11:42am "Joe" Steele:

Heres a classic:

  11:44am Parq:

Annie, re 11:36, I was just thinking the same thing; how convenient that they're suddenly "clumsy". But let's keep in mind that the same logic pervades multi-million-dollar summer blockbusters in the movies.
  11:44am stingy d:

hi everybody. i dreamed that i had a small pet elephant named tom. was cool. but i lost him in union square for a bit. but then i found him again.
  11:45am AnAnonymousParty:

By now the ship's controls will have had time to sleep it off.
  11:46am PMD:

I like how Diana has strong ABS! Oh, wait, it's space. No muscles needed.
  11:47am JJZ:

Ah, I thought I heard Dokaka.

Getting scans would be great. I'll go back and review the strips we've seen here recently to make a request or two via your website. Thanks. Some images and dialogue are too perfect or awful or whacked, sometimes all at once, to pass up.

Really loved the Newgarden+Karasik essay on Nancy (www.tomhart.net/teaching/handouts/howToReadNancy.pdf).

Any chance of getting Mark Newgarden on WFMU some time?
