The new world's hottest pepper, Pepper X, is 3 times spicier than its predecessor

Pepper X measures an average of 2.693 million Scoville Heat Units. A jalapeΓ±o, by comparison, measures just 2,000 to 8,000 SHUs, while a serrano can land between 10,000 and 23,000 SHUs.

The previous record holder, the Carolina Reaper, which was also developed by Currie, averaged 1.64 million SHUs.

I'm looking for a ghost hot sauce. Not ghost pepper. More like NOLA-style dark romance ghost. We were at a neighborhood place a week or so back having a happy hour snack, and I said, "We need hot sauce." K8 got up and came back with a bottle. Plain white label. Looked printed. No graphic. Totally delicious real spicy, deep flavor. Just excellent on hushpuppies AND in the queso. The brand seemed to be Lucy Roux, and the style, Lenore. And the tiny print at the bottom implied it was made a couple of neighborhoods over.

O Lenore, Lenore. We go back to the same place a few days later for dinner, and I ask the waiter for "that amazing hot sauce from Ridgewood." "What?" he says, "We only ever have Frank's. You want some?"

So there I am, using Frank's like a child being punished for wanting too much. It tasted like the sea Icarus plunged into after flying too close to the sun: salty and boring and shameful.

I look online. I ask around. No one has heard of this hot sauce.

O Lenore, Lenore! Nevermore? Nevermore?
