I think Gus could sing old standards quite passably (including personal asides, of course). Modern rock or soul songs, would prob be better as Shatneresque recitations over music - more potential for Gus originality there.

Besides some imitation of the Hawaiian steel guitar sound, the "feedback" loop of mainland America to Hawaii and back to the mainland likewise deserves credit for the Surf Rock sound. Much like Kurosawa, bringing Western flicks to samurai films and sending them right back to Western flicks.
