I think one reason great artists are dicks is that we compel them to be so. We are at least as much to blame as these special individuals.

Was Emily Dickinson a dick? No, because she kept out of the limelight. But then yes, because she kept out of the limelight.

  11:42pm

I understand that reception of their work. For example, for the longest time I didn't like/get Henry Cow. Much later I did, and now I'm a fan of their oeuvre. I haven't yet traversed that barrier with Can.
  11:43pm

Faust: also not a special fan. Heard them back in the day, never quite felt they made enough of a difference for me to care.

Avatar 11:45pm
Andrew S:

everything blends
  11:46pm
Dean:

I like the messier Krautrock: old Guru Guru, Grobschnitt, Jane, Kraan, Eloy.

It is Krautrock, i.e., German quasi-progressive noodling and jamming.
Avatar 🦇 11:47pm

but like computerworld, trans europe, it's not technopop (not to be confused with techno)

Avatar 🦇 11:47pm

I feel like that's what we called that stuff... Computer World, Numan, height of fame Devo and Human League
  11:49pm
Dean:

But good lord, nobody plays early Genesis anymore but you.

Kraftwerk were in many ways sui generis, their own gig. Their early stuff was more "Krautrocky," their later stuff almost unique to them. They obviously influenced Numan, Devo, etc., but they don't particularly belong in a category with those latecomers.

Well I missed most of it all - love the playlist though.
Sorry to be a bit too late for the CAN convo … they blew me away when discovered at 16 1981!
Those developmental years - oh so significant.
I say it was the utter change from album to album of Can that made them so special. Not one feels like the next. So if you wanna fall for a certain
Sound - that would be a challenge.

I adore Future Days, EGE BAMYASI , Unlimited Edition!, Tago Mago!
but imo: everything from 1968 thru 1975 is worthy. etc etc

Re Faust :
Imo , def start with Faust TAPES (their most surreal listing experience), also love their bizarre First album.
So Far (2nd) is more hard to pin down
And many find “IV” their peak. (Not me - but it’s still great). Just get that Re Rec megaCorp box set , and get it over with.

Ps : CAN : Lost Tapes is a surprisingly Strong 💪 barrel scrapings 3xCD set.
Don’t start there - but great addition for collectors !

Dean, imo: the CAN albums are best appreciated in their entirety (as individual experiences); like ye olde days , when we weren’t so distracted and didn’t have access to everything everywhere all at once. The individual albums kinda build a vibe that some of the solid compilations Don’t quite match. But those carefully curated & self cherry picked (Holger & Irmin) collections still Can make magic moments.
I highly recommend the band selected 👉
“Unlimited Edition” = such variety on one 80min CD (formerly a 2xLP set). Yet it’s not as classic as their unusual peak period. Note: many fans will direct one to “Soon Over Babaluma” - yet imo that was a very transitional album that had polarizing high highs & a few lows.
“FUTURE DAYS” 1973 is my personal pick winner.
