A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Bluejays get a bad rap as pests but are really shy -- they get bullied off feeders by cardinals, doves, robins, even sparrows! There used to be one out back that would imitate a hawk's whistle! All the sparrows would scatter, it would swoop in for a few bites from the feeder, and then the sparrows would come back and chase it away!

Have to say this show has put in me a budding appreciation of ornithology, which was the polar opposite from a childhood phobia of sorts.

Had just read a Twain passage from A Tramp Abroad, in which he finds himself in the middle of the woods away from his hotel in Heidelberg, Germany, and has this encounter with a winged-creature:

β€œWhen I had stood ten minutes, thinking and imagining, and getting my spirit in tune with the place, and in the right mood to enjoy the supernatural, a raven suddenly uttered a horse croak over my head. It made me start; and then I was angry because I started. I looked up, and the creature was sitting on a limb right over me, looking down at me. I felt something of the same sense of humiliation and injury which one feels when he finds that a human stranger has been clandestinely inspecting him in his privacy and mentally commenting upon him. I eyed the raven, and the raven eyed me. Nothing was said during some seconds. Then the bird stepped a little way along his limb to get a better point of observation, lifted his wings, stuck his head far down below his shoulders toward me and croaked againβ€”a croak with a distinctly insulting expression about it. If he had spoken in English he could not have said any more plainly than he did say in raven, "Well, what do YOU want here?" I felt as foolish as if I had been caught in some mean act by a responsible being, and reproved for it. However, I made no reply; I would not bandy words with a raven. The adversary waited a while, with his shoulders still lifted, his head thrust down between them, and his keen bright eye fixed on me; then he threw out two or three more insults, which I could not understand, further than that I knew a portion of them consisted of language not used in church.

I still made no reply. Now the adversary raised his head and called. There was an answering croak from a little distance in the woodβ€”evidently a croak of inquiry. The adversary explained with enthusiasm, and the other raven dropped everything and came. The two sat side by side on the limb and discussed me as freely and offensively as two great naturalists might discuss a new kind of bug. The thing became more and more embarrassing. They called in another friend. This was too much. I saw that they had the advantage of me, and so I concluded to get out of the scrape by walking out of it. They enjoyed my defeat as much as any low white people could have done. They craned their necks and laughed at me (for a raven CAN laugh, just like a man), they squalled insulting remarks after me as long as they could see me. They were nothing but ravensβ€”I knew thatβ€”what they thought of me could be a matter of no consequenceβ€”and yet when even a raven shouts after you, "What a hat!" "Oh, pull down your vest!" and that sort of thing, it hurts you and humiliates you, and there is no getting around it with fine reasoning and pretty arguments.”

Goes on hilariously like this…

Generally in NJ this might be a low-turnout year, both for the primary and the general, owing to no federal or gubernatorial races. But! Your vote, and your urging others to vote, can change that! Bring friends to the polls and local meetings of Dems and progressives, and tell them to do likewise! And find a local GOTV effort you can hop in onΓͺβ€”they ALWAYS need more folks, even just to nudge folks to return their mail-in primary ballots, and it's never too early, given the momentum we need to build to unseat local Republicans on town councils, in Trenton, and (a biggie) on school boards.

Cut off the tax breaks to real estate. They are the largest beneficiary. Also would be nice if we could stop overrelying on property taxes for city tax revenue. This has basically made real estate and city governments partners in real estate development.

I deeply applaud and applaud the efforts of these folks. We need more like it. The point is to mitigate the rapacity and suffering of the marginalized who often don’t have the means for legal help.

But until we organize and stand united against this the economic system of capitalism we’ll forever just be putting band-aids on bigger and bigger gaping wounds.

Politicians in such an electoral system in which β€œdonations” literally amount to bribery will never be moved to do anything but the very bare minimum, if anything at all.

How much higher does the tinder (which includes obscene price-gouging at grocery stores and monopolization of everything else by corporate bandits) need to go before it all explodes?

That is exactly the attitude that leads to massive, systemic discrimination against renters, the idea that only ownership is a valued position. You are looking at the few who profit from a broken system and saying, "See? It works."

The best protection against landlords is enforceable laws and a government that cares about more than lining its own pockets. And the worst is when those who think they've won turn on those who struggle because "if I made it out, you could too if you just tried." It's when people confuse the system with its victims and blame them for failing when they were never meant to succeed. And success is not *ownership*! It's dignity and safety and justice.

I didn’t say that ownership is the β€œonly” valued proposition. But it is the best one can shoot for in the present. If you don’t have the ability, then of course one needs the protection of the law, but one can’t depend on the passage of good laws.

Just catching up on comments now, and yeah, especially in NYC, "affordable housing" is total bullshit, and there is ZERO enforcement against bad landlords trying to reduce the few remaining rent stabilized apartments there are out there by neglecting their buildings to the point where they are unlivable, and then doingbullshit "material upgrades" to raise the rent past the limit. I stuck it out in such a place for almost 14 years until there was literally a hole in my top floor ceiling down to the brickwork, which started to fall in and we had no heat or hot water. Calling the City meant that the LL would then threaten everyone in the building, ask for 90 days to "cure," get it, still do nothing, lather, rinse repeat.

Also, if you can afford $1200 in rent (after tax dollars) every month, and have a consistent payment history, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to get a mortgage for that amount that has tax breaks, regardless of your source of income (freelancer, long term temp, etc).

Absolutely. Ditto for underfunding/deliberate civic choices to destroy/underfund public transportation. In the Before Times, some of the support staff had a 2.5 hour commute each day each way from Starrett City. Two long, slow busses to the subway, then a few transfers until they hit Grand Central, which was a 2 minute walk to the office. My Big Boss sometimes bragged how "oh, he just cycles to the train station" (Metro North) in Westchester so people shouldn't bitch about lack of public transportation. Now, compare Metro North stations and trains to the decaying shitshow that is the MTA in NYC....

And the poor -- the working poor in the most unreachable part of the outer boros -- have the worst and longest commutes as well as the least development of other businesses/more food deserts etc. They HAD to come into Manhattan to get prescriptions filled reliably, etc. One woman I know had to decide what kind of grocery shopping she had to do before leaving the office at night. NO big supermarket within walking distance, just crappy bodegas. As she put it, "I can take one bus to one store that has affordable paper stuff like toilet paper and has OKish bread but the produce and meat are horrible; it's a different bus to get to the one good place for vegetables and fruit but the meat and poultry are way overpriced, and if I want a decent fish store it's all the way out of the way. NONE of those busses are the busses I use for my commute."

Speaking of a seeing something on a large screen I was reminded last night how little we (I) do these days.

Popped in to the wonderful new books and record store/activist hub/performance space called the PIT (Property Is Theft) in Wmsbg. They were presenting as their first film night, β€œBabylon,” a 1980 film about the Jamaican neighborhoods in Britton where Linton Kwesi Johnson hails. Had a huge screen setup that took up more than half the wall space.
Great sound system there (they also offer and repair sound equipment). Was a great vibe. Wish I could have stayed longer…

There is a Publix a good five miles away via bus (one four miles via two busses), or a wal-mart 1.5 miles away via foot. I technically have options, that residents in my neighborhood don't have.

Thanx Trouble! Always enjoy the community here, even when it gets a bit fractious. Thankfully the biggest a-hole on the FMU boards never posts here

Right?! I still remember the first time my mom took me to a library as a kid, it seemed so unlike anything else I'd ever heard about. Wait, so we can just "borrow" as many books as we want and bring them back when we're done? Are you sure? That doesn't sound right.
