FANNY REPORT:

Monday evening, I attended a viewing of the Fanny documentary release, The Right to Rock, followed by a reunion concert, in their and my hometown of Sacramento. The band consisted of June & Jean Millington, Alice deBuhr, Brie Brandt and Patty Quatro. Jean is recovering from a recent stroke, so her son Lee Madeloni played bass. It was a raucous and rockin' evening, and they still have that same drive and musicianship. June and Patty were tearin' up the fretboards, and lots of stories were shared. June talked of high school hootenannys, while Patty talked of growing up with The Stooges, MC5, the Runaways, Joan Jett and Bob Seger. A good time was had by all.

I can now see the resemblance between Max and Gus, once a well regarded writer and poet, then lost popularity and wrote only to pay for the next drink, but drinking heavily throughout both periods. Max was "a survivor with the street smarts of a Bowery hobo." Dorothy Day apparently knew him from the Village in both his periods, in the latter one inviting him to one of her Catholic Worker farms to try to rehabilitate him. Gus seems like a mess at times, but that's the family resemblance.

We went maybe 20 years ago, and there was a great sound installation with beaters and mics hooked up to the debris that had been left over after it was closed -- bedsteads, broken doors, pipes, metal toilets, etc. -- where there was a programmed sequence of sounds that started scattered and rose to a crescendo over quite a good bit of time. I thought it was really well done.

Definitely recommend checkin-out the “Fanny:The Right to Rock documentary(2021?) that appears to be circulating on PBS lately !
The drummer is extraordinary !
The whole vibe & their sound really work for these ears !
Try the in-studio and on TV videos via interwebs … imo, kickin’ stuff !
Btw: imo, even some of the newer reconstituted band releases are pretty worthy !

Might want to check out Ace of Cups. All female rock band from San Fran in the 60's. They released a double LP (finally) in 2018 after many years of being dormant. They all lived in a house with Mike Bloomfield, Harvey Brooks, Buddy Miles & therest of The Electric Flag back in the day (1966-67)
