	9:09pm doctorjazz: ↳ Zipperhead7 @9:06 My memoery/understanding of it, at least on CD's, is that there's redundancy, so youj can lose a little data, and still get music with nothing lost. It takes more than a little to affect playback. In the audiophile world, it was also said that the more error correction needed, the worse the audio sound quality would be (so even that little amount that preserved the music was undesirable).

	9:15pm Listener Gregory: Solid state memory used to lose its charges after a while (e.g., the old USB memory sticks), so we were told not to rely on them. Now they’re apparently much more reliable, but I wouldn’t count on them for a lifetime of memory. I agree that ceramics will last for centuries… so ceramic LPs maybe? Just don’t drop them!

So the idea of replacing libraries with digital memories is very dubious.

It takes more than a little to affect playback. In the audiophile world, it was also said that the more error correction needed, the worse the audio sound quality would be (so even that little amount that preserved the music was undesirable).

	9:15pm Listener Gregory: Solid state memory used to lose its charges after a while (e.g., the old USB memory sticks), so we were told not to rely on them. Now they’re apparently much more reliable, but I wouldn’t count on them for a lifetime of memory. I agree that ceramics will last for centuries… so ceramic LPs maybe? Just don’t drop them!

	9:25pm Listener Gregory: It is an irony commented on in the book world that you can easily read a book printed in 1600 (or a medieval manuscript), but electronic memory from 1960 or 1970 is very likely totally decayed or has no working equipment to decode it. So the idea of replacing libraries with digital memories is very dubious.

Somebody had a manuscript weighted by a wine bottle, and when it was accidentally lifted the manuscript blew all over France. It's titled "Wing Dining: A Kind of Dreamy Nightmare."
