"...Much of the power of our Freedom Movement in the United States has come from this music. It has strengthened us with its sweet rhythms when courage began to fail. It has calmed us with its rich harmonies when spirits were down. And now, Jazz is exported to the world. For in the particular struggle of the Negro in America there is something akin to the universal struggle of modern man. Everybody has the Blues. Everybody longs for meaning. Everybody needs to love and be loved. Everybody needs to clap hands and be happy. Everybody longs for faith. In music, especially this broad category called Jazz, there is a stepping stone towards all of these."

We are here this evening for serious business. We are here in a general sense because first and foremost, we are American citizens, and we are DETERMINED TO ACQUIRE OUR CITIZENSHIP to the fullest of its meaning. We are here also because of our deep-seated belief that democracy transformed from thin paper to thick action is the greatest form of government on earth. But we are here in a specific sense because of the bus situation in Montgomery.__Martin Luther King, in 1954, addressing the Holt St. Baptist Church, Montgomery, Alabama, having just been selected as president of the Montgomery Improvement Association...at the age of 26

Until 1930, 4 out of 5 Black people lived in the U.S South-

U know, similar to MLK- some elements in the U.S Government tried to kill Paul Robeson on numerous occasions- unscrewing the front drivers side wheel of his car- to cause Paul’s car to swerve into oncoming traffic at highway speed- each time the wheel fell off before reaching highway speed

King was assassinated as a radical for love and reformer for justice… paraphrasing - “what good is equality if I can not feed my family this way?”

So, King died as a radical for peace, love & as a man who told the Truth in public- today
his historical memory has been reborn/reshaped into what we see today…

militarism… poverty… spiritual death

The Drug War has replaced the political uses of Jim Crow- the strange fruits of which we witnessed on May 25th, 2020

Coming up next, to conclude the program, Nina Simone will be present a song for Reverend King. She is performing it three days after the assassination (at the Westbury Music Fair on Long Island, NY). The song was written by Ms. Simone's bass player, Gene Taylor.
