First heard about WFMU in the fall of 1981 in the cafeteria of Upsala College. I hung around and eventually got a work/study job being paid by Upsala to work at WFMU doing record library stuff.

I learned about WFMU by accident. It was Morris County NJ 1986 and I was 12 years old, bored by commercial radio. One night I was flipping around the dial and heard someone playing Zappa’s “Billy the Mountain.” I was mesmerized. You mean there are other weirdos out there? Something different from this suburban assembly line? Nightmare Lounge. Vanilla Bean. Dave the Spazz. Sister Krys. Wild Girl. Bronwyn C. Pat Duncan. Then a short while later I was visiting NYC w a friend and we stopped in See/Hear and there was a stack of LCDs (FMU’s old program guide / zine). I grabbed one and kept reading & listening. That’s my story!
