Breakwater	Release The Beast "Release The Beast" by "Breakwater"	Release The Beast 7"	Be With Records	2019	This mighty slab of funk may have been lost to the ages, except for the great stroke of luck of having Daft Punk sampling a large chunk of it for their song "Robot Rock". This tune is proof that it is so, so much more than that pummelling sample...the vocal delivery, killer solos and lyrics make this a tune that absolutely should be included in the pantheon of great funk tunes. Possessing a sound and a feel that was lightyears ahead of its time, “Release The Beast” is a showcase for Breakwater’s phenomenal power-funk capabilities. The energy is astounding. It rips out of the grooves on a deep funk tip, with speaker-smashing, room-shaking drums competing with distorted funk-rock guitar, bumping bass and space-age synths. Schwarz (vocals, guitar, bass), Tina Sanudakura (synthesizers), Christian Darc (drums, vocals) and Thomas Welz (bass, vocals) in Kiel, a seaside town in the northern part of Germany. The 7" EP "Too Late" was the first release in 1980 and was recorded in a small laundry-room with a 4-track TEAC (the EP was reviewed in the German SOUNDS-magazine as "strangely, archaic music, brute sound that seems to be recorded with a purposely damaged 4-track"). After the departure of Thomas Welz at the end of 1980, No More worked as a trio until the end of 1983. The song "Suicide Commando" (released in 1981 and not to be confused with the Belgian band Suicide Commando, who named themselves after that song) is the band's biggest success. The New Musical Express described "Suicide Commando" as "suitable German electro fashion" but the song spread in the following years internationally regardless of genre and scene. Spanish Town Skabeats	Stop That Train	Stop That Train/Stir The Pot 7"	Rock A Shaka	2021	"Stop That Train" is a 1965 ska song by Jamaican band The Spanishtonians (also known as the Spanish Town Skabeats), that has been covered and sampled by numerous artists. Its most famous cover was its first, a 1967 cover by Keith & Tex. That rendition was in turn sampled by various artists, including Scotty, the Beastie Boys and Vanilla Ice. The song has also been covered by Clint Eastwood & General Saint and Don Campbell. Les Surts	C'est Grace A Toi "C'est Grace A Toi" by "Les Surts"	J'ai Tant De Joie/C'est Grace A Toi 7"	RCA/Victor	1967	This is a fantastic cover of "You Can't Hurry Love" Coco, Pat, Rocky, Dave, Monikya (Monique), and Nicole Rabaraona were the eldest six of twelve children. Born in Madagascar, the four brothers and two sisters performed as the vocal group "Les Surfs" from 1963 to 1971. They recorded and toured throughout the 1960s in languages and countries all over the world. Performances at San Remo secured them as a popular act in Italy, Spain, and Germany. With further television appearances in France, Italy, England, and the United States they garnered an international audience of millions. As a dynamic-sounding, original-looking group, they secured many original compositions and some covers of English-language songs. They ended in 1971, as family life and children took over from performing. The following years would see Monica and Rocky reunite for a couple of years but this didn't last. The boys settled in Canada and started their own families. Monica lived in Canada for a while but eventually returned to live in France. Nicole immigrated to the United States and worked as a carer for children in need. Monika died suddenly on November 15, 1993 at the age of 48. She is survived by her two sons Lawrence and Nicolas. Nicole died on May 5, 2000 and was laid to rest with her sister in the Rabaraona family tomb in Fiakarana, Madagascar.		0:32:50 (Pop-up)

We weren't sure if that would serve our purposes best, though. Then the "Homeland Security Remixes" EP was discovered. Now there are surprises for all of us today!!!		1:03:02 (Pop-up)

This noise is a monophonic version of the song "Dixie". The sound effect source was generated by the alarm from a digital wristwatch that Mick Jones owned, and was intentionally added to the recording by Jones. The single version has more pronounced bass. Also when Joe Strummer screams "The crowd caught a whiff / Of that crazy casbah jive" at the end of the third verse the word "jive" is sustained for several seconds with digital delay.[citation needed] Additionally, the sound effects of the jet fighters in the last verse are lower in the mix, particularly just after "drop your bombs between the minarets." Psychic Graveyard	Is There A Hotline?	A Bluebird Vacation	Deathbomb Arc	2020	Psychic Graveyard is Eric Paul, Paul Vieira, Charles Ovett, and Nathan Joyner. The sound of fireworks used as a musical instrument on ‘A Bluebird Vacation’ perfectly symbolizes the range of powers Psychic Graveyard wields. Pretty and enthusiastic if they want, but if they choose to get in your face, the sound of celebration becomes one of pain. Interweaving field recordings like, and other non-traditional instruments into their distinctive style of rhythmic meanness, Psychic Graveyard find themselves in new territory. Very few tracks include guitars at all. The results work hand in hand with the lyrics addressing very personal experiences with mental illness, antidepressants and benzodiazepines, and the difficulty of helping families going through their own challenges. These sounds don’t blindly spin into despair nor foolishly claim that overcoming just requires finding the right vocal melody. Thoughtless Cruelty is described as “a stark observation of human cruelty filtered through the band’s grim fascinations including long term nuclear warnings” something that becomes obvious when listening to vocalist Freddy Vinehill-Cliffe. As we are constantly reminded about how we can optimize our productivity, our diet, our free time etc, we internalize that “hustle mindset” and it negatively reflects in our personal lives. Sports Team	Here's The Thing "Here's The Thing" by "Sports Team"	Deep Down Happy	Bright Antenna Records	2020	London-based rock band Sports Team are best known for their unwavering assessment of British society, but their lyrical insights apply far and wide. “Here’s the Thing” is a cathartic explosion of disillusionment, complete with wailing horns and guitars. It tackles the competitive mindset of capitalism (“If you’re in bed then someone else is catching worms”) and unrealistic fad dieting (“If you just change the way you eat you’ll never die.”) Listening to it briefly punctures the low hum of existential stress that has settled in my brain. The song follows the lives of separate but interconnected individuals in society: from a bigoted Café owner to beleagured kitchen porters, dreaming buskers to down-and-out beggars. On the band’s third album in four years, Skinty Fia, Fontaines D.C. detail what it’s like to be the boys in a not-so-better land, as Irish expats who may share the same skin tone and speak the same language as England’s dominant culture, but who are instantly singled out the moment their accents are revealed in mixed company. As Babs mentioned, seems to be a heavy "Heroes" homage going on there, too; but he mentions the exact streetcar/neighbourhood that we inhabit. It was weird devising a theme (things in the mail) and then getting a package from England the next day w/ this song & artist we'd never heard of prior, singing about Toronto, Parkdale & mentioning a couple of things that were actually happening in our lives this week. Sometimes life is weird like that. I also like that he is from Montreal (not Toronto) and on "Maple Death" records. Haha.

I saw him play solo at the Great Hall, busk his own merch table and was looking for a place to stay for the night. He got the audience at the Great Hall to sing the harmonies which was quite moving and haunting since The Great Hall is a former church.

Breakwater	Release The Beast "Release The Beast" by "Breakwater"	Release The Beast 7"	Be With Records	2019	This mighty slab of funk may have been lost to the ages, except for the great stroke of luck of having Daft Punk sampling a large chunk of it for their song "Robot Rock". This tune is proof that it is so, so much more than that pummelling sample...the vocal delivery, killer solos and lyrics make this a tune that absolutely should be included in the pantheon of great funk tunes. Possessing a sound and a feel that was lightyears ahead of its time, “Release The Beast” is a showcase for Breakwater’s phenomenal power-funk capabilities. The energy is astounding. It rips out of the grooves on a deep funk tip, with speaker-smashing, room-shaking drums competing with distorted funk-rock guitar, bumping bass and space-age synths. Schwarz (vocals, guitar, bass), Tina Sanudakura (synthesizers), Christian Darc (drums, vocals) and Thomas Welz (bass, vocals) in Kiel, a seaside town in the northern part of Germany. The 7" EP "Too Late" was the first release in 1980 and was recorded in a small laundry-room with a 4-track TEAC (the EP was reviewed in the German SOUNDS-magazine as "strangely, archaic music, brute sound that seems to be recorded with a purposely damaged 4-track"). After the departure of Thomas Welz at the end of 1980, No More worked as a trio until the end of 1983. The song "Suicide Commando" (released in 1981 and not to be confused with the Belgian band Suicide Commando, who named themselves after that song) is the band's biggest success. The New Musical Express described "Suicide Commando" as "suitable German electro fashion" but the song spread in the following years internationally regardless of genre and scene. Spanish Town Skabeats	Stop That Train	Stop That Train/Stir The Pot 7"	Rock A Shaka	2021	"Stop That Train" is a 1965 ska song by Jamaican band The Spanishtonians (also known as the Spanish Town Skabeats), that has been covered and sampled by numerous artists. Its most famous cover was its first, a 1967 cover by Keith & Tex. That rendition was in turn sampled by various artists, including Scotty, the Beastie Boys and Vanilla Ice. The song has also been covered by Clint Eastwood & General Saint and Don Campbell. Les Surts	C'est Grace A Toi "C'est Grace A Toi" by "Les Surts"	J'ai Tant De Joie/C'est Grace A Toi 7"	RCA/Victor	1967	This is a fantastic cover of "You Can't Hurry Love" Coco, Pat, Rocky, Dave, Monikya (Monique), and Nicole Rabaraona were the eldest six of twelve children. Born in Madagascar, the four brothers and two sisters performed as the vocal group "Les Surfs" from 1963 to 1971. They recorded and toured throughout the 1960s in languages and countries all over the world. Performances at San Remo secured them as a popular act in Italy, Spain, and Germany. With further television appearances in France, Italy, England, and the United States they garnered an international audience of millions. As a dynamic-sounding, original-looking group, they secured many original compositions and some covers of English-language songs. They ended in 1971, as family life and children took over from performing. The following years would see Monica and Rocky reunite for a couple of years but this didn't last. The boys settled in Canada and started their own families. Monica lived in Canada for a while but eventually returned to live in France. Nicole immigrated to the United States and worked as a carer for children in need. Monika died suddenly on November 15, 1993 at the age of 48. She is survived by her two sons Lawrence and Nicolas. This noise is a monophonic version of the song "Dixie". The sound effect source was generated by the alarm from a digital wristwatch that Mick Jones owned, and was intentionally added to the recording by Jones. The single version has more pronounced bass. Also when Joe Strummer screams "The crowd caught a whiff / Of that crazy casbah jive" at the end of the third verse the word "jive" is sustained for several seconds with digital delay.[citation needed] Additionally, the sound effects of the jet fighters in the last verse are lower in the mix, particularly just after "drop your bombs between the minarets." Psychic Graveyard	Is There A Hotline?	A Bluebird Vacation	Deathbomb Arc	2020	Psychic Graveyard is Eric Paul, Paul Vieira, Charles Ovett, and Nathan Joyner. The sound of fireworks used as a musical instrument on ‘A Bluebird Vacation’ perfectly symbolizes the range of powers Psychic Graveyard wields. Pretty and enthusiastic if they want, but if they choose to get in your face, the sound of celebration becomes one of pain. Interweaving field recordings like, and other non-traditional instruments into their distinctive style of rhythmic meanness, Psychic Graveyard find themselves in new territory. Very few tracks include guitars at all. The results work hand in hand with the lyrics addressing very personal experiences with mental illness, antidepressants and benzodiazepines, and the difficulty of helping families going through their own challenges. These sounds don’t blindly spin into despair nor foolishly claim that overcoming just requires finding the right vocal melody. Sports Team	Here's The Thing "Here's The Thing" by "Sports Team"	Deep Down Happy	Bright Antenna Records	2020	London-based rock band Sports Team are best known for their unwavering assessment of British society, but their lyrical insights apply far and wide. “Here’s the Thing” is a cathartic explosion of disillusionment, complete with wailing horns and guitars. It tackles the competitive mindset of capitalism (“If you’re in bed then someone else is catching worms”) and unrealistic fad dieting (“If you just change the way you eat you’ll never die.”) Listening to it briefly punctures the low hum of existential stress that has settled in my brain. As Babs mentioned, seems to be a heavy "Heroes" homage going on there, too; but he mentions the exact streetcar/neighbourhood that we inhabit. It was weird devising a theme (things in the mail) and then getting a package from England the next day w/ this song & artist we'd never heard of prior, singing about Toronto, Parkdale & mentioning a couple of things that were actually happening in our lives this week. Sometimes life is weird like that. I also like that he is from Montreal (not Toronto) and on "Maple Death" records. Haha.

I believe I have one of their key albums kicking around, but I rescued it while doing some cleanup work for someone, so it isn't the best playing copy. I'll re-investigate and see if it doesn't ruin our sylus, haha. Do you recommend their/his stuff?

	10:01pm Tyler: @Babs The Microphones is basically one guy with a wide revolving door of collaborators that makes very woodsy, atmospheric music. I saw him play solo at the Great Hall, busk his own merch table and was looking for a place to stay for the night. He got the audience at the Great Hall to sing the harmonies which was quite moving and haunting since The Great Hall is a former church.
