My 2c RE Palin in NYC. Not sure who is hosting her; the "real" money drivers on the Right HATE hicks like her. Also, what is it RE the usual "useful idiots" who rail against "liberal elites" are the FIRST people who try to get into anyplace remotely classy? What's the matter, performative roasting small game over a moose-shit fire isn't really your thing?

I mean, I have a family member who really did make it in business and is super-proud of their big home in the burbs, their Ivy Club memberships, etc so I have something of a view on that world. I promise you that NON-Ivy "private clubs" (like the idiots that hosted the Proud Boys Leader) MAY occasionally ask in a scrubbed-up rube, but the Ivy clubs or anyplace where Actual Educated People gather (not just cashed-up racist finance bros from Long Island) would NEVER have one in. Sure, pour enough drinks into the older White set at the Yale Club and they are just as petty and nasty, but they wouldn't hire Palin to clean out their septic tanks back in Connecticut.

@Threemoons: her backers are the scum who want to reverse the libel/defamation standard set in NY Times v. Sullivan in 1964 (1st Amendment protects media even when they print mistaken/false statements about public figures provided the publication did not act with "actual malice," a higher bar than just being careless or negligent). I wouldn't be surprised if she isn't in league with Peter Thiel and other such dirtbag overlords. I suspect the plan is to lose at trial, file an appeal that eventually wends its way to the SC, where the Covid Six will do serious damage to press freedoms.
@Polyus: the truckers are Canadian morons converging on Ottawa.

fwiw First Avenue is a total drag these days, they control the majority of other viable music venues in town and seem to work closely with Star Tribune and Minnesota Public Radio/The Current in a way that would almost lead one to belive there are only about 15 bands in the Twin Cities area. Everyone else is left to kind of scrape to put on shows at whatever dump is available for however long. But that's just me.

That's kinda the thing, First Ave used to always be great for giving new bands a chance back in the Steve Maclellan days and before. Those days are long gone, although even old timers will admit that the club actually makes $ now, which it didn't used to as much.
@chuck - this is true, unfortunately the really great little DIY spaces we had maybe 10-15 years ago have been lost to developers. I think this is happening everywhere though.

Oh, courtneynoir, that's so great! Drop-In has been kickass! Frank in Queens and Christina Ginger both lit it up. PLEASE make sure to remind me/us know that you're gonna be on! That's so cool!

@courtneynoir I know how you feel. I radio periodically out of Asheville, NC and feel uncomfortable discussing it any further than that on this board.

Glorious show today, Tom Dash. Thank you!

@courtneynoir, I love when DJs play things from other DJs marathon premiums. Adds to the excitement of marathon time

I love that this show is on Friday mornings now cos I don't usually have a ton of work to do by then - just moving computer files around - so I have time to look everything that's played up :)

I am enjoying this set very much. Very soothing yet provokes mental meandering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am

March is going to be a busy month of shows, if I can stomach going out in a crowd. Gang of Four plays Atlanta on the 11th, and Superchunk plays the day after. Kim Gordon plays Asheville on the 22nd with Mary Lattimore and (I think) Bill Nace!

@Yeti Bob Jon King, Sara Lee, Dave Pajo, and Hugo Burnham.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am
Handy Haversack:

Very cool, TomDash!

ChukAmok, we have two southern concerts at the beginning of March: the Connells (third time postponed from Sept.) and Mattiel. Not sure what else might come along. You gonna be up here during Marathon or any other time coming up?

JAZZ. We're deep in the fanny pack, people!
Avatar 11:36am
YETI BOB:

Chuk: Whoa, that's crazy!! David Pajo? It might work though. I never expected Jon King to come back on stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am
ChukAmok:

@Tom Dash Excellent!
@Handy Where are those shows? North Carolina? Not sure if I'll be able to make it up during the marathon. It's a busy month, and there's some concern over me having to travel to get to the station, which I understand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am
ChukAmok:

@Yeti Bob Yeah, the Pajo addition really took me by surprise as well.

Sorry, I was unclear: two southern bands playing here in NYC. Connells at Brooklyn Bowl and Mattiel at Baby's All Right.
Avatar 11:40am
YETI BOB:

Chuk: Go4 was one of the first shows I ever attended, in 1980. Then I saw the reuinion show in 2005, 25 years later. I remember thinking: "They were 25 years old the first time, now they are all 50, at this rate the next time I see them they will all be 75!". I was only about 10 years off. R.I.P. Andy Gill.

yeah - everyone in the Northeast stay safe with your "between 2 and 20 inches" forecast :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
Handy Haversack:

It's enough snow that you want to top up the liquor cabinet but not so much snow that you feel like you need to hoard eggs and onions. Happy medium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
joe mulligan:

have fun with the snow out there, it is something to miss if you don't have to shovel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
ChukAmok:

@Handy Haha, you were getting my hopes up for a potential visit!

@Yeti Bob R.I.P. indeed. My first thought on the news of the tour was that it felt a bit soon, but alas... I have never had the privilege of seeing them before!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am
Handy Haversack:

That's 2d10 inches!

It's definitely enough snow that you want to make sure you're parked on the left side of a one-way street!

(And now I'm thinking I should pick up a couple of onions ...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am
ChukAmok:

Yeah, watch out for that "bomb cyclone".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am

@Yeti my older brother and wife saw them many times back in the day, I missed them but got to see that great reunion tour in 2005 - so good! RIP Andy indeed - that guitar sound ripped my ears wide open when I first heard as a teen...

TomDash, yeah, it was one of our grab-bag stock-up trips. We needed dry vermouth, Punt e Mes, rye, añejo rum, wine, and Campari. We should come down to your store some time!

Also, we told Colin at Mama Tried we'd come by for a drink this upcoming month, if you want a friendly beer at some point!

tim, I'm still getting used to "wind sheer" and "thunder snow"!
Avatar 11:48am
