Hey, welcome back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Doug in JC:

Hey Juli & Scott!
  5:05pm phat in lincoln:

This Vehicle Birth is fantastic. Reminds me just a bit of NoMeansNo, somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Scott67:

G'day Doug!🍻😎🤙

Hi everyone!!!!!
  5:06pm Widger:

nice start

Big shout out to Fin , Dan and maybe Paul
  5:08pm Widger:

  5:08pm comeawaywithemd:

Here are some thank yous to people who helped me bring these songs to the air on WFMU: Cody DeFalco, Gary Barrett, Nathan Moore, Victor Kamhazi, and Jason the ZigZag Wanderer from KONR and previously 90s Mass college and community radio stations
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Scott67:

G'day coel.👍😎🍻
  5:09pm comeawaywithemd:

Paul better show up I put him on the flyer
  5:09pm phat in lincoln:

I moved away from Western MA in the late 80s and lost touch with the music that was happening in the Baystate, so this should be entertaining.
  5:09pm comeawaywithemd:

I hope everyone is having a nice day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm coelacanth∅:

hey there Scott!
  5:10pm lessrad:

Tuning in from Anchorage AK & feeling this Dagobah rn
Avatar 5:10pm vietnam_veterinarian:

super unwoundy
  5:10pm comeawaywithemd:

soooo more notes on this "math rock" stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm lazy rider:

Oh man, I'm excited to see where this goes. There were so many pockets of Math Rock bands in so many different locales.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm coelacanth∅:

likewise emd
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Rick from SC:

Hey all. Great tunes
  5:11pm lessrad:

Skinner Pilot!!!!
  5:11pm comeawaywithemd:

Other people came from DC to Boston for college, like Geoff Farina and Mary Timony
  5:12pm comeawaywithemd:

DC math rock gets remembered/a section on the NORTH AMERIC AN MATH ROCK wikipedia but not its influence/permutations in Boston
  5:12pm mb:

Listening from Greenville, SC
lovin’ these tunes!
  5:12pm comeawaywithemd:

  5:13pm comeawaywithemd:

Boston did its own thing--mutating forms, conventions....resisted easy categorization
  5:13pm comeawaywithemd:

so sounds there are interconnected and constellated but often end up sounding sound entirely singular (like Karate)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm lazy rider:

Hoover and all related bands on Dischord and offshoot labels, Crown Hate Ruin, and Lovitt, Maximillian Colby, Sleepy Time Trio.. oh man, I've got my week of listening to plan out revisiting university days!
  5:14pm em:

  5:14pm comeawaywithemd:

math rock, emo, and post hardcore are very constellated sonic territories in Boston
  5:14pm phat in lincoln:

What I remember of Western MA in the 80s was that a lot of the Boston scene got heard there. It was really nice. Northampton was a great place.
  5:15pm comeawaywithemd:

In my last broadcast I played some other bands that also fit in here: Karate, Glans, Victory at Sea, and Wicked Farleys
  5:15pm phat in lincoln:

Wait. What?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Fishtown Mike:

Been looking forward to this show since it was announced. Caught your your last show on the archives. Big fan of Geoff Farina fan here. Hoping SS & Karate will make another appearance.
  5:15pm phat in lincoln:

Oh man, I forgot about Karate. They got a lot of play here in the hinterlands.
  5:16pm comeawaywithemd:

No Geoff Farina in this one sorrrrry we double dipped last tiiiime
  5:16pm comeawaywithemd:

Thanks for being here, Fishtown Mike!
  5:17pm comeawaywithemd:

I was informed someone back in the day saw a show that was Helium, New Radiant Storm King, Dirt Merchants and....
  5:17pm comeawaywithemd:

EVERCLEAR before they got famous
  5:18pm phat in lincoln:

@comeawaywithemd wow
  5:18pm comeawaywithemd:

a show in Amherst I believe
  5:18pm comeawaywithemd:

Glad your listening is sorted, lazy rider!!!! Hell yes
  5:18pm josh:

Will there be an Pizza ?!?
  5:19pm comeawaywithemd:

josh josh josh
  5:19pm comeawaywithemd:

good job thinking ahead but STAY IN THE MOMENT
  5:19pm ledzeppelinsucks:

Sounds terrific. I got this bird gruel I made. It is cat treats, Sesame Street cereal, donut chunks, rice, marshmallows, dog food and corn flakes. I slapped it together and dumped it near the crow perch area. The crows have gone nuts. Some were fighting with pecking and scratching. Making more.
  5:19pm comeawaywithemd:

w the pretty pretty guitars
  5:19pm comeawaywithemd:

hahahaha I love birds so this makes me happy, ledzepsucks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm coelacanth∅:

Lynx became everclear?
  5:20pm Leela:

This is great so far.
  5:20pm comeawaywithemd:

okay so
  5:20pm nate dogg:

diggin all these groovy sounds
  5:20pm comeawaywithemd:

  5:21pm comeawaywithemd:

Mathachusetts post-rock ppl were not mathematical scientists, nor were they trying to create MATHY sounding music
  5:21pm ledzeppelinsucks:

There were bands in Southern CA that sounded like this around 1992.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm lazy rider:

This show will definitely be in heavy-rotation on my archive-listening playlist!
  5:21pm lessrad:

I was at that show ( nrsk, helium et al.) it was for the Loud Music Fest.
killer show
  5:21pm olivia:

Math rock was a big scene at my college station so this is bringing on a lot of nostalgia
  5:21pm comeawaywithemd:

they were largely art students, who were more inspired by experimental music than calculus
  5:22pm comeawaywithemd:

they were tired of grunge and hardcore
  5:22pm Leela:

What I remember is that one night in 1993 Lee Fisher put "Spiderland" on at a party at Terence Burke's house and a year later there were math rock bands everywhere.
  5:22pm comeawaywithemd:

they wanted to make "surprising, interesting, dynamic" music, quoting Michael Hutchins here
  5:22pm comeawaywithemd:

Of Lynx and Glans
  5:23pm comeawaywithemd:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Rick from SC:

The volume has been elevated
  5:24pm phat in lincoln:

My first punk rock show was in Northampton right before I moved away in the American Legion hall by the high school. Turns out members of Sebadoh (who I was right behind in school), Dinosaur Jr., and Unsane were playing or in the crowd. Lol.
  5:24pm josh:

RAise your hand if you were at the famous Pizza/don cab show
  5:24pm comeawaywithemd:

So a lot of these bands are different combinations of a lot of the same people. Paul Joyce is in 5 of these bands, Dan McCarthy is on four, etc
  5:24pm comeawaywithemd:

I wanna go to the famous Pizza/Don Cab show
  5:24pm ledzeppelinsucks:

Victims Family vs Sonic Youth.
  5:24pm comeawaywithemd:

This tune is dedicated to josh
  5:24pm phat in lincoln:

@Leela that is awesome. That album had a similar effect here in Nebraska! Lol
  5:25pm phat in lincoln:

I'm really digging this set.
  5:26pm comeawaywithemd:

I want to talk to you more about that later, Leela! Hiiiii <3
  5:26pm josh:

  5:26pm comeawaywithemd:

So since I am also highlighting women in Boston music shortly, want to point out because this set is very boy heavy but sound boy heavier than it actually is
  5:27pm comeawaywithemd:

Skinner Pilot featured Elizabeth Sharp on bass
  5:27pm comeawaywithemd:

She also played drums in New Radiant Storm King and had a solo thing called Ill Ease
  5:28pm comeawaywithemd:

Helms features Tina McCarthy (nee Helms) on bass guitar
  5:28pm Leela:

Just speaking as a person who was going to shows back then, not a musician, there were TONS of amazing women in Boston making music in this time.
  5:29pm nate dogg:

the guys from Pizza worked evenings at Chippendales
  5:29pm comeawaywithemd:

Yes and we are going to listen to only a fraction of them today but it is a very sick fractionnnnn
  5:30pm comeawaywithemd:

Chippendales seems like a great employer for the Hottest Guys in the Galaxy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Scott67:

Did that end with a sample of Lawrence Fishburn drumming in Apocalypse Now??
  5:32pm lessrad:

Big ups to All Your Things Are Gone!
  5:32pm Widger:

Mona. Thalia. Christina! Terry!
  5:32pm comeawaywithemd:

And yes I am sure that Spiderland spawned mathy post-hardcore bands everywhere!!! But if you read the NORTH AMERICAN MATH ROCK PAGE it's just DC and California
and every time I edit it some jerk deletes in
  5:32pm comeawaywithemd:

Thanks for link lessrad!
  5:33pm comeawaywithemd:

Here is the article this all stems from: daily.bandcamp.com...
  5:33pm Leela:

Mona Thalia Christina Cora!

Flyer for that loud music bill (@baystatehotel on Instagram) https://www.instagram.com/baystatehotel/p/CQy_thzhxaQ/?utm_medium=copy_link
  5:34pm comeawaywithemd:

Also if you want to hear some mathy, noisy, experimental post-rock music with a powerful vocalist who is not a dude being made nowwwww. check out my favorite album of 2021: credentials.bandcamp.com...
  5:35pm comeawaywithemd:

oh yeaaaah
all six minutes of this for the people
  5:36pm comeawaywithemd:

So I should have said: Milkmoney featured Denise Monaghan who was also in the only Boston riot grrl band, Cheesecake
  5:36pm Leela:

and Seana! My housemate in the Syrup USA era, in a spectacular and very illegal, haunted apartment building on Boylston St.
  5:36pm comeawaywithemd:

The band was short-lived, however, because there wasn't a lot of need for that movement in Boston and Denise felt like sadness resonated more with her than anger
  5:38pm comeawaywithemd:

When I began this research I thought the 90s Boston scene must have been so empowering to women due to women in bands there in the 80s like Kim Deal, Kristin Hersh, and early bands of Thalia Zedek
  5:38pm olivia:

All these band names making me hungry
I’ve decided I’m ordering pizza after
Wish I had cheesecake too but won’t be able to get that
  5:38pm Leela:

Cheesecake kept going for a long time after she left - they got really good by the end! I designed a tshirt for them, which I totally forgot until a friend sent me a photo of herself wearing it and I was like, Wow neat shirt where'd that come from, and she was like YOU, ding dong, you drew it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm coelacanth∅:

oh i was not looking...i have a milkmoney album ("wheelie") it's a good bit more "poppy" than that track
  5:38pm nonloc:

This Syrup USA track goes and goes
  5:38pm comeawaywithemd:

A lot of our primary knowledge of gender in Massachusetts is the Salem Witch Trials, which obscures the fact that Massachusetts is just the oldest territory in "America" so there is MORE HISTORY
Avatar 5:39pm HyperDose:

Oh wow this is trippy good!
  5:39pm comeawaywithemd:

But by the mid 1800s women could read in the Harvard Library
  5:39pm phat in lincoln:

Glad I tuned in!
  5:39pm Leela:

Matt Fein and his trippy analog synth!
  5:40pm comeawaywithemd:

Margaret Fuller of Cambridge is widely considered the first female public intellectual and wrote/edited amongst the great (male) Transcendalist writers we are taught about
  5:40pm ?:

Anyone hear of a band called “Run for tin” out of Boston I think?
  5:41pm comeawaywithemd:

Massachusetts actually has a long and strong history of empowering women, including women who lived independently in "Boston marriages," etc
  5:41pm comeawaywithemd:

  5:41pm comeawaywithemd:

  5:42pm phat in lincoln:

  5:42pm Leela:

YAY. MassArt represent.
  5:42pm comeawaywithemd:

OH WAIT there is one more place you can hear some Sugarbitch and an interview w Cora Higgins:
  5:43pm ?:

Kind of Spore esque’
Avatar 5:43pm HyperDose:

This is what the people need!
  5:44pm comeawaywithemd:

oooo did someone say Spore??
  5:44pm comeawaywithemd:

some of you are clearly programming fortune tellers
  5:44pm comeawaywithemd:

  5:44pm comeawaywithemd:

Cora Higgins, the first human voice I had to make disappear for a blip for the FCC
  5:44pm Widger:

  5:44pm ?:

I love spore. Mona has some pipes…..
  5:45pm nonloc:

oh hell yes
  5:45pm comeawaywithemd:

So Mel Lederman was also in Sugarbitch--I played Victory at SEa last week, which featured him on bass
  5:45pm Neeil:

Cheesecake from Boston as referenced in the Juliana Leucking track “17 18 19 Grrrls” I believe!
  5:45pm Leela:

Mona! Swoon.
  5:45pm Widger:

Marc y
  5:45pm comeawaywithemd:

Mona Elliot from Victory at Sea is singing here
  5:46pm J:

Meaghan Mclaughlin was in a great band called barbaro.
  5:46pm comeawaywithemd:

Spore was also one of many noise rock acts Marc Orleans was in, which is why the guitar is melting your face periodically
  5:46pm lessrad:

  5:46pm ?:

Spore sent me an autographed record to me when I was in early high school.
  5:47pm comeawaywithemd:

once again rest in power, rage in peace to that incredibly talented human
  5:47pm comeawaywithemd:

*last month, in my last broadcast, feels like last week and also five years ago sorry haha
  5:48pm comeawaywithemd:

Very glad Spore decided to cover the only Beatles song I love
  5:48pm nonloc:

Marc Orleans ripping
  5:48pm Robert Kelley:

I also did a school report on them…lol.
  5:48pm phat in lincoln:

This Spore rocks.
  5:48pm Marie:

loving this set
  5:49pm comeawaywithemd:

I am loving all these stories and recollections
  5:49pm comeawaywithemd:

Thank you, Marie! And everyone. My lecture is over haha sorry
  5:50pm comeawaywithemd:

I played Juneau, which Marc Orleans was also in, in the last broadcast
  5:50pm comeawaywithemd:

There are much heavier and noisier Dirt Merchants song and they are very good
  5:50pm comeawaywithemd:

But I wanted this set to be as hot and erotic is possible
  5:50pm comeawaywithemd:

So it is all about ladies demanding what they want and need and being HEAVY
  5:51pm Robert Kelley:

Any “Turkish Delight?”
  5:51pm comeawaywithemd:

*as possible
  5:51pm comeawaywithemd:

Played Turkish Delight last time!! Tried not to play same bands as much as possible. They would be absolutely great here tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm coelacanth∅:

no wonder i'm diggin' it so
  5:52pm phat in lincoln:

This Dirt Merchants is a revelation. I think I've heard them before. But this is kicking my ass.
  5:52pm comeawaywithemd:

Made exception for Vehicle Birth cuz I had to have that intro
  5:52pm nate dogg:

i like this tune. love her voice.
Avatar 5:52pm vietnam_veterinarian:

that was super nice
  5:53pm comeawaywithemd:

Yeah Dirt Merchants are weird....their songs either rip and are noisy and hard hitting and GREAT or they are like slow honky tonk flavored slow jamzzzz
  5:53pm comeawaywithemd:

It's a very singular dynamic I feel hahaha
  5:53pm Robert Kelley:

Was “Cake Like” Boston based?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm DonJuanTijuana:
