Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Wed. Dec 15th, 7pm - 10pm: Music For a Free World fills in for Bodega Pop on the Drummer Stream!

Options October 30, 2021: Kaleigh Wilder is an improviser and sound sculptor.
Speaking through the baritone saxophone, her music is born of her embodied experiences of joy, spirituality, childhood trauma, and being biracial—not white or black, but both. This duality can also be seen in her training. She is a trained classical musician but one who also studied jazz, free improvisation, and even went so far as West Africa to study Ghanaian music and dance.

Avatar 🥁 2:00pm WR:

Hello Dave. Looking forward to learning of Kaleigh Wilder, honored guest for today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Dave Sewelson:

yeah WR!
  2:04pm DavidJ:

I’m liking this! Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm fred:

Hello Dave, Kaleigh and free listeners
The drummer at a show yesterday had an "impro libre" T-shirt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Dave Sewelson:

DavidJ and fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Dave Sewelson:

thats a cool t-shirt fred....what show?
Avatar 🥁 2:16pm duke:

Hi Dave, Kaleigh , Free-Worlders
Avatar 🥁 2:17pm WR:

Okay, we learned a bit how y'all got to baritone. Bio blurb says classical trained, assuming that was at uni. What led to improv / experimental / heritage musics?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Dave Sewelson:

duke....welcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm fred:

@Dave: That was "Elg et la chimie". The drummer is also part of France Sauvage
Avatar 🥁 2:30pm WR:

Nice. Thank you for the answers. Great that you reconnected to the freedom of inner child. Also great that the AACM and Sun Ra are part of the advanced curriculum. When I was in school, jazz band training was Stan Kenton. Of course I'm older than Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm fred:

@WR: older? Do you have the beard to prove it?
Avatar 🥁 2:33pm WR:

So old no more hair.
  2:35pm rw:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Dave Sewelson:

rw...welcome
  2:35pm rw:

I'd put the CD in my car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Dave Sewelson:

i am older than dirt
  2:38pm rw:

In fact... I may do just that.
Avatar 🥁 2:38pm WR:

Own it? We can get a copy if some one made a copy of the now when the musicians made it. So at most we have a copy of the copy.
  2:39pm Kaleigh:

Thanks for asking the question! There's a coalition at some universities within jazz studies to include free or creative improvised music in the discourse, or to have musicians from that cannon invited as guest artists rather than just the "Stan Kentons"
Avatar 🥁 2:43pm WR:

I knew many great musicians have been artist-in-residence and doing master classes and seminars but delighted to learn of programs based or significantly including improvisation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm fred:

There was research at work around some improvising software (as in a computer improvising music live with a real musician). They got Steve Coleman to try it and he didn't storm out, so I guess it did "something". Not sure where that effort stands now (I'm just a tech guy there)

Aliens from outer space? I wonder what their music sounds like. I'd go to that show

Weird disinformation.

A friend of mine was to play in a festival last year, biggest audience she ever played for. Lockdown hit in the afternoon, she ended up doing her set (live on a web radio) in front of the crew. Big letdown for everyone
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Dave and Kaleigh! Happy Saturday, everyone!
Avatar 🥁 3:25pm WR:

WFMU only infects certain individuals with long term or permanent results. Research still pending on the pre-existing conditions which trigger that outcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Dave Sewelson:

GINA!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Dave Sewelson:

Avatar 🥁 3:31pm WR:

Yes, a sweet melody. Like Dave said, would have enjoyed if it went on longer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm fred:

@WR: In my case, the pre-existing condition was sparked by hanging out with metalhead bikers in high school. They introduced me to Kate Bush, which they played at the end of the night to chill out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm doctorjazz:

Hi Free Folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Dave Sewelson:

hey doc!
Avatar 🥁 3:50pm WR:

One checked bag for free ended well before the pandemic.

Some musicians (like a Yo Yo Ma) buy a ticket for their instrument, but, yes, $$.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Gina Bacon:

I've heard some horror stories about traveling with instruments.
Avatar 🥁 3:58pm WR:

We are hearing Kaleigh but not Dave? Curious hearing only her side of conversation.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Gina Bacon:

Metalhead bikers and Kate Bush are not things I'd normally expect in the same sentence!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Gina Bacon:

Dave, your voice has dropped out!

Same on my phone and on the computer.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Gina Bacon:

Welcome back!
Avatar 🥁 4:01pm WR:

At least it was Kaleigh and not Dave that we could hear, we we've heard plenty of Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm fred:

@Gina: That's why I think that experience made me receptive to WFMU. They were tough as nails, Kate singalongs was for later, out of sight. No idea why they let me in, but I've got a talent for that, I guess I'm harmless enough to be irrelevant
Avatar 🥁 4:10pm WR:

Great conversation today.
Avatar 🥁 4:17pm WR:

Are we going to hear a bari- duet today? Hint hint.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm fred:

@WR: I'd love that to happen!
  4:20pm Jim Ryan:

O Yeah! I remember catching Pepper Adams with Monk in 1958 at the Five Spot . . . so totally on it! Hi Kaleigh, Hi Dave. Bari Rules!
  4:21pm Jim Ryan:

And how about Leo Parker 'I Cross My Fingers.'
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Jeff Golick:

So grateful for the sharing you two are doing today. Thanks, Kaleigh and Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Dave Sewelson:

yeah Jim!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Gina Bacon:

That sums up WFMU folks so perfectly, fred...eclectic, open ears!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Dave Sewelson:

thanks Jeff G.....
  4:23pm Kaleigh:

I love Leo Parker!
  4:23pm Kaleigh:

Thank you Jeff and everyone for being an attentive audience today
  4:25pm Jim Ryan:

And Serge Chaloff with the 1st Herd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm fred:

@Gina: Yeah, where else would talking metal and Kate Bush make sense on a free jazz show?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Gina Bacon:

Exactly! It's a beautiful thing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Gina Bacon:

I'm really digging the music and conversation, Dave & Kaleigh!
  4:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi hi hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm fred:

I think it was erased more than lost. Part of it is it couldn't be written in scores
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Gina Bacon:

Heavy, Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm fred:

But person-to-person transmission kept it alive. Problem is that this mode can be selective in wrong ways. I've it seen it getting better though, but ways to go
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Jeff Golick:

I think the distinction between written knowledge and embodied knowledge is a really important one to raise up, as the written side has kinda lorded it over the embodied side for way too long, in part as a means to keep certain people out of, eg, the academy. (To maybe radically oversimplify things....)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Jeff Golick:

Anyway, gotta got get my laundry. Thanks for the great and thoughtful show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Dave Sewelson:

Thanks for stopping by Jeff..issit dry yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Dave Sewelson:

Doug Hi Hi Hi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm doctorjazz:

Cool Braxton!
Thanks Dave and Kaleigh!
  4:53pm Kaleigh:

Thank you for your comments, Jeff!
Yes, agreed the written side has really co-opted the acquisition of knowledge and left people out of the embodied knowledge. Always working to confront this in my musical practice
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Gina Bacon:

I'll be ready over here, Dave! Many thanks to you and Kaleigh for a really great show!
