Avatar 3:49pm Justin B.:

Hello and happiest of Friday afternoons to you, Sheila and BoomBoomers!
Avatar 3:50pm cal:

Hey Sheila, I heard you talking about psychotherapists and I had to sign onto the Comments Board.

I am a Gestalt Psychotherapist and I am doing lots of Trauma Work using EMDR and Internal Family Systems Therapy. Its a very busy time for me and I really value using these modalities in an integrated way. Much success in this crazy time!
  3:50pm Andrea Egert:

Awwwww - you are an awesome psychotherapy-promoting spokesmodel!!! Thanks for the shout-out & I fully agree with you that, with the right fit, therapy is the greatest thing in the world! I'm a clinical social worker in private practice in Englewood and my heart is warmed to the point of bubbling <3 <3 <3 thank you for being a regular part of my self-care regimen, and - yes - I have recommended your show to some of my female clients!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm bore:

@djsheilab, yes I agree with that. I'm talking more about the research side, and where the money goes.
  3:51pm headcleaner:

not a therapist of social worker, but a high portion of my close friends / romantic partners tend to be. I guess I give them something to work on

Avatar 3:53pm djsheilab:

Thanks for sharing, cal! I'm so happy to have listeners in this important line of work. I'm tempted to call Sophisticated Boom Boom a music show for therapists :)

  3:56pm A. Lou:

Hi bore, I disagree. respectfully! There's really interesting research happening, including mentioned (EMDR/Internal Family Systems Therapy) Expressive Therapy, Micro-dosing. Its coming to more light and I do think people are seeing limitations of certain therapies, and are now trying new/doing combo-talk-therapy with other approaches. Its exciting times. Thank you for your work in Gestalt, cal. Can't wait to hear what you have to say on this, Sheila
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm bore:

I think you can just look at the statistics and outcomes to see what I'm talking about.

Well Sheila, Tuning into your show every Friday is Mental Health vitalization for me! Thank you for what you do!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Vanessa Tara:

i've heard an old three degrees recording of this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Passaic River Blues:

@Vanessa Tara: it's so good! The Three Degrees' "Collage" is basically the perfect psych soul song.
Avatar 3:59pm djsheilab:

Vanessa Tara—The Three Degrees is far the best version! And probably my favorite psychedelic soul record ever.
Avatar 3:59pm djsheilab:

Passaic River Blues—Jinx!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 3:59pm K8:

Yeah, Sheila, I so appreciate how open you've been about your emotional journey through this pandemic...and before. I spend a lot of time encouraging my students to take care of themselves and talk to other people about how they're feeling...this pandemic had taken a real toll on all of us, but jeez, I'm extra-worried about the kids. Next school year is gonna be joyous but also a rough transition...lots to heal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Passaic River Blues:

hahahaha Just channeling the thoughts of my Girl Group Guru!
  4:00pm Andrea Egert:

I'm just kinda intuitive like that, Sheila B.:) I'm also a trauma-focused practitioner & utilize EMDR. IFS, and other helpful treatment models. Plus I'm a singer/songwriter which, I'm sure, helps me a ton in my attunement functioning :) yeah, the industry of mental-behavioral healthcare is controlled by tyrannical hypercapitalism, just like pretty-much everything else in this her crazy American culture :( but there go I...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm bore:

@a.lou We have yet to see how effective those things will be, I'm talking about the current state of mental health in our country. Looking at homelessness specifically, the tragic direction we've been going in becomes clear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm JohnEBGood:

Hi DJSheila and WFMU family. I'm reading a novel written by Jennifer Egan. So far so good. Love yourself and all : )
Avatar 4:01pm cal:

A.Lou. Thank you so much. Great to be acknowledged. Doing this work has been so exciting and has made my practice so alive. I see people actually transform and get past their early and present traumas. It brings me such satisfaction at this point in my career.
Avatar 4:01pm djsheilab:

bore—Hopefully once they legalize therpeutic MDMA, a lot of traumatized vets (many who end up homeless) will get the treatment they so desperately need.
  4:01pm headcleaner:

If not therapy per se, then some form of 'deliberate practice' (philosophy, meditation) or at least an active interest in modern psychoanalytic concepts (taken with as much salt a you like) seems necessary for maintaining one's sanity figuring out this whole "life" thing. One of the key realizations that helped was -- well I may or not be "broken", but modern social roles and systems most definitely *are* (especially as regards work, status, and the perceived need to appear happy and well adjusted at all times). The "game" is definitely rigged in other words... and the only way to win is "not to play".
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 4:04pm K8:

Thunderstorm in Brooklyn!!!
  4:04pm Joey:

I so agree Cal! I cannot imagine not tuning in here, especially during this horrible pandemic. We as a family, have been trying to help as many friends of ours that still cannot come away from this psychologically. So much amazing music here and on other fabulous shows, and we have been sharing some of it with other. It has made a BIG difference. My father, who we lost recently, would have loved this program!! Myself, my wife Diane and our daughter Jess are here for whoever needs us! Joey.
Avatar 4:04pm djsheilab:

Thanks to all of you for engaging in this thoughtful debate!
Avatar 4:04pm cal:

bore. You make a good point. So many people do not get the services they need and in is reflected in the world we live in! Poor or no services go to underserved populations. That's structural.
  4:05pm Dave In Leicester:

I run Drawing and Talking sessions for primary school children, helping them to process traumatic events. The demands of an over formalised academic curriculum means kids in the U.K. are getting less time to regulate and be mindful, tough for all kids but more so for those who have experienced what kids shouldn’t have had to experience

@Dave in Leicester--Drawing and Talking with kids sounds so amazing! I've been doing a bit of that, too, in some of my poetry sessions...all remote, like using JamBoard and interactive slides and stuff. Not my favorite medium, but it's worked sometimes...

(about to lose wi-fi from Tstorm) Interesting discussion, thanks to all. As I venture out post-pandemic, I can see that people are struggling, they are different. A song I heard has been running through my mind all week, Sly and the Family Stone, "Everybody is a Star" "Everybody is a star, I can feel it when you shine on me, I love you for who you are, Not the one you feel you need to be." This is a great conversation that is alighting my heart! and lastly 2 @bore - I'm glad you mentioned homelessness because I specifically/exclusively work with the homeless folks in my city. Their issues are very complex and require beyond the usual individualized outpatient treatment. It is Social Trauma - and a Social Problem we all share in helping to figure out. Many challenges in their lives are dictated by their socio-economic status, lack of resources, effects of institutional racism. I'm super focused on solutions so Excuse my mini soc. worker spurts!
