Memorial Day, special in many ways
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Irene and all!. And would you look at those two! Glad for their service.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm fred:

Good afternoon and belated happy birthday Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Michael 98145:

Dad was a Navy man
Avatar 12:03pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Summer has finally arrived here, happy days. And I decide to spend part of my day in the cinema but we’ll worth it, ‘Quiet Place Part 2’ my palms were in permanent sweat mode from start to finish!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Irene Trudel:

Hey headcleaner, james, Michael and fred! Yes, let's remember all who served.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm redkayak:

Happy Memorial Day all :)
Avatar 12:04pm Sylvia:

Hello Irene and all
Avatar 12:05pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Hope you had a fab day yesterday, Irene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks, fred! Sean, summer has taken a back seat this weekend but I'm seeing sunnier times coming later in the week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Irene Trudel:

Welcome redkayak and Sylvia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm redkayak:

My father was in the Navy in WWII, and one grandfather was in the Navy in WWI. I guess kayaks are in my dna ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm redkayak:

@Irene - Thanks! Nice pics of your parents :)
  12:08pm headcleaner:

My father + his parents are enjoying another day of peaceful rest at Arlingon National Cemetery... ought to pay those folks another visit sometime soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, "Sick Day"! Was wondering why I was nodding along until it hit me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Irene Trudel:

Cool, redkayak. Both my mother and her father were in the Navy. In WWII my mom was a "Radioman" and her division helped find an enemy submarine off the Maine Coast. Luckily it was finally declassified before she passed and they gave them recognition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm redkayak:

@Irene - How cool! What a story!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm redkayak:

@headcleaner - I'd like to go to Arlington some day...there and the D-Day sites....
Avatar 12:14pm Stork:

Hi Irene! Happy yesterday-birthday! What great pictures! I see a strong resemblance to your mom, for sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm redkayak:

@Irene - so THAT's where you got your interest in radio ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm listener james from westwood:

A fortunate declassification indeed, given how long the folks at Bletchley Park were silenced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Irene Trudel:

redkayak, that influence is so true. My mom would occasionally talk about her experiences and "sound" words out with Morse Code. She also first told me about shortwave, and my first radio had a few of the bands on it, further sparking my interest. It was a no-brainer when in high school I had the chance to join their radio station. I haven't looked back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Stork!
  12:20pm headcleaner:

@redkayak - ANC is one of the most beautiful (built) public spaces in the US + definitely worth a visit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Irene Trudel:

I need to go visit, headcleaner. I also recommend the Vietnam Memorial, which is quite a beautiful experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm listener james from westwood:

Atop my list of places to visit should I get back to DC sometime soon.
Avatar 12:26pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Beautiful set, Irene, thank you

Also looking for a good excuse to use Amtrak again. (I have a possible conference I can attend in 2022, but it's in AUGUST—not exactly cherry blossom weather IIRC down there).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm WR:

Hello Irene and all.

the Coryell & Majumdar recording on discogs,
www.discogs.com...
not widely available it appears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Irene Trudel:

Hi WR! I was afraid of that. I need to drag that album into the computer before the CD falls apart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Irene and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm coelacanth∅:

- Happy birthday! (or general birthday time)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm listener james from westwood:

Yay for Roy Harper!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Irene Trudel:

Hiya coelacanth∅! Thanks for the birthday wishes-- from you, and everybody. Really lifts this old gal's spirits!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Happy B'day, Irene!
  1:01pm rw:

Good morning! Happy Birthday Irene! You (as far as I can remember from a photo or two that I've seen) look like your mom!
Avatar 1:03pm Sean in Bristol UK:

I think we have to declare May 30th a special day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm doctorjazz:

Happy Birthday Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm listener james from westwood:

Yessss—"Tam Lin"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm doctorjazz:

Fairport!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm listener james from westwood:

Remember exactly where I was when I first heard this track: Northvale, NJ, in the mid-’90s, driving around to kill time, when Bill Kelly spun it. Just blown away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm doctorjazz:

Mr Thompson, making am early good impression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Happy birthday weekend, Irene!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Summer and Michael and Sylvia and doctorjazz and Doug! Sean, back in the days before Monday holidays were decreed by our government, May 30th had been the Memorial Day holiday. As a little young-un, I thought the celebrations and parades were specially for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm doctorjazz:

Great pics, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Irene Trudel:

I have a lot more of those, doctorjazz. I must post the rest to Flickr someday.
Avatar 1:15pm Sylvia:

@Irene aww, celebrations and parades for you, that's so cute
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Irene Trudel:

:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Doug Schulkind:

My parents were Army/Navy, too, Irene.
Avatar 1:22pm Sean in Bristol UK:

11 Years in the British Army for me, I was deemed a ‘remf’!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Irene Trudel:

That's a nice connection we have, Doug. Ha, Sean! I do remember you telling me that a while ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Brian in UK:

Hello Irene & sound seekers.

Love Song for the Dead Che is sublime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Irene Trudel:

Hey Brian! Yes, this is a really great album by U.S. Of A.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm listener james from westwood:

Blue skies finally peeking through these past few days of gloom over the FMU listening area!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Brian in UK:

Irene, is it today? At least you can go out and celebrate. Though I imagine hearing some music live would be tops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Irene Trudel:

james, I see the clearing outside my window, which is really nice. Brian, it was yesterday but my husband Peter believes in a least a wee's worth of celebrating. We are planning on seeing some live music on Thursday, which will be really special.
Avatar 1:47pm Stork:

Uneasy is one of the finest albums of the last few years. Every track is wonderful.
Avatar 1:50pm Stork:

Moondog: buried right here in the Münster Zentralfriedhof. Come and visit and we'll picnic at his gravesite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm doctorjazz:

Have to pick Uneasy up, whenever I hear it on FMU, sounds great!
  1:54pm Peter K.:

Wikipedia lists the complete personnel for that Moondog album, although it's not clear if all the musicians played on every track:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moondog_(album)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Stork! I did know that Moondog was buried in the town you live in. I will take you up on that offer someday. And thanks, Peter, for the Moondog musicians link. I took one look at the booklet and my eyes glazed over!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Irene Trudel:

doctorjazz, "Uneasy" is really worth owning. I generally love Vijay Iyer's work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm PaulRobeson1920:

Warm greetings WFMU land

Sounding good, Irene Trudel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm doctorjazz:

Me too, Irene-have to decide between cd and vinyl (Not on Bandcamp, unfortunately)
Gotta run for a bit, Zoom Bat-Mitzvs (these thingsaren't gone yet).
Later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for the warm thoughts, Paul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Irene Trudel:

Happy Zooming, doctorjazz!
Avatar 2:06pm Stork:

I got our picnic basket packed, Irene. There's a bottle of wine in there cause it's, ya know, Germany. It's our civic duty here to drink as much as we can hold, in public, at all events. So, maybe two bottles. I went there on his hundreth birthday with my ipod, a blue-tooth speaker, copious amounts of red wine, and some hash, just to honor him properly. People had been there before me and the site was spiffed up and festooned with flowers. Nerby mourners were a bit nonplussed, but hey - you're only a hundred once!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Irene Trudel:

Sounds like it was the perfect way to honor Moondog, Stork!
Avatar 2:13pm Stork:

Bathing in the late-arriving spring sunshine here, and in the Sea of Miles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm HyperDose:

Love that new avatar, Paul. And I love what you're putting down, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm coelacanth∅:

crazy i've never heard this album.
and easy to connect the dots toward bitches brew
  2:23pm headcleaner:

My dad's music :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks HyperDose! coelacanth∅, it's fun to hear that progression, although In a Silent Way came between the two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Michael 98145:

So What. Perhaps my favorite Miles track ...
  2:25pm headcleaner:

Are you guys holding up to your civic duty to smoke as much as you can in public as well, Herr Stork?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Irene Trudel:

...from my favorite Miles album, Michael. headcleaner, I believe Herr Wolfgang has been doing that for years, I went to Berlin for a work trip, and at our meet-up Stork got me so high I wasn't sure I'd make it back to the hotel!
  2:28pm headcleaner:

Gut zu wissen (good to know) :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Michael 98145:

Let me chime in with additional birthday wishes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm coelacanth∅:

in a silent way does throw off the theory of evolution doesn't it!
still it has some of the elements of it's 2 neighbors
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm coelacanth∅:

for a long time kind of blue was in the "preferred" selections on the jukebox at the pub. that means it was 50¢/song, instead of a buck.
the best part was i never knew of anyone to complain when Miles came on, which was often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Michael 98145:

i keep remembering the early days of FM. and how radical it seemed ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Michael 98145:

my jukebox go-to was usually Patsy Cline
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Michael 98145:

and on the educational front, i learned today friedhof is the word for graveyard
  2:41pm headcleaner:

Mary Halvorson is also apparently at The Jazz Gallery on the 19th
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Irene Trudel:

Indeed.Michael! That's the era of radio I grew up with. Free-form was really prevalent in the NY area, and even on Top 40 radio you could hear a much broader range of music than you do these days. Now most stations have been consulted-to death on what "works." it's very tiresome to my ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, The Jazz Gallery has some really nice shows coming up: www.jazzgallery.org...
Here's Barbes' calendar too: www.barbesbrooklyn.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Michael 98145:

@Irene, one of the reasons i am HERE so much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Michael 98145:

I grew up listening to Lorenzo Milam's KRAB station
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Irene Trudel:

The San Francisco area had equally inventive radio. Still does have quite a few decent non-commercial stations, IMO.
  2:50pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Irene and all! Happy Monday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Irene Trudel:

Hey Gina! Glad to have you here.
  2:52pm headcleaner:

KFJC was definitely very special, at a certain time (hopefully it still is, though one doesn't hear about it much outside the Bay Area)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks to all who joined today's listening festival! Join me as I do it again next Monday at noon. Stay tuned for Ken's Last-Ever Radio Extravaganza! wfmu.org...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Irene! take care
Avatar 2:58pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hello's here! wfmu.org...
  2:59pm Gina Bacon:

Thanks, Irene!

Many thanks, Irene!
