Hi Samantha. Ooooooh, Yoko.
Avatar 12:33pm BigP0ppa:

Still decent mind, don't get me wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm chris in the redwoods:

can we say we hear Can influences, BigPOppa? "rip off" seems like something RIAA would say.
Avatar 12:34pm Jeff in Brooklyn:

Big POppa - I totally hear the Can influence --- what, in your opinion, is the difference between rip-off, influence, and homage?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm steveo:

Dear Government of Jersey City,

Before I listened to WFMU, I was too ignorant to appreciate Yoko. But now I have seen the light. Please do not tax them.

WFMU: where Yoko > John
Avatar 12:36pm BigP0ppa:

Okay. thats just my flippant language. Influence is a better word. I don't consider rip off to be a bad thing at all in music, art generally
Avatar 12:37pm Jeff in Brooklyn:

BTW - my favorite Can album is by Stephen Malkmus !
Avatar 12:37pm TDK60:

I just got here BigPOppa but, Y.O. and CAN were simultaneous in early '70s; maybe with co-knowledge? I dunno.
Avatar 12:37pm Hubig Pie:

You have a compelling argument, Steveo.
P'rolly won't work cuz she's not a Joisey resident
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Woo:

Jim Keltner on drums, Klaus Voorman on bass. John Lennon rhythm guitar.
Avatar 12:38pm BigP0ppa:

So Jeff - there is no difference IMO between influence, homage or rip off
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Little Danny:

Is there reason to believe Yoko Ono was even aware of what Can was doing in 1970 when this was recorded? Give her some credit.

Avatar 12:39pm BigP0ppa:

IDK60. I thought Yoko was only active in the 80s. Okay, see I've waded in with a comment that's completely ill informed. It was more of a question in response to Yoko being ahead of her time. For clarity, I've always enjoyed what I've heard
Avatar 12:40pm Fox:

Whaaaaaat?! Hey there, Samantha!
Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Bruce S.:

Yoko was an artist in the 60s when John met her. I think she knew what she was doing

The band in this has a very CAN grove
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Handy Haversack:

There are certainly worse things to be influenced by!

Avatar 12:42pm BigP0ppa:

I've burnt bridges with this Yoko comment. I'll hold my hands up and say that the evidence suggests she was ahead of her time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Handy Haversack:

Jesse Jarnow's Freaklore segment on Wake yesterday had some cool info about Yoko Ono, Fluxus, and the sixties art scene in NYC. Educational!

I saw a live interview with Yoko back in 2012 at SXSW, it was so inspirational. I was about to go to art school and to hear all about her work directly from her was amazing, she has this absolute devotion to participatory art.

Just Yoko and I, me still pretending that she didn't exist. Eventually we drove to the other side of town, back into the dark, to a house. A baby blue, two story house. There were children in the

@chresti, IRL I've never been, but had a dream about going and saying to the family member who was w/me, "Let's hit the SG Valley, that's where all the good restaurants are", but also being worried about getting stuck in traffic. Wait, you can hike at the tennis courts? Maybe I *will* have to go.

Lilacs and Gaylord does sound right ken
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm ChukAmok:

Avatar 2:31pm Samantha:

@mrputtle- no with radios actually!
  2:31pm Mark R:

Ah, "Moon Safari," this sure takes me back, but in a good way--this and the "Virgin Suicides" soundtrack were my first two Air albums, they were kind of the soundtrack to when my (now grown) kids were little--I mean, REALLY little, like 2 years old and 0!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm officina:

Lovely fill-in Samantha. Miss your regular show!
Avatar 2:31pm slugluv1313:

yes this Air is so gorgeous!
  2:31pm mrputtle:

with live broadcasts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Ryansterlingvirtue:

@samantha I had a villa for two weeks in the south of Spain and I purposely only played this album so I’d forever associate it with that time. It worked!
  2:32pm Tyler:

"takes me back, but in a good way" too
  2:32pm Mark R:

Well, the summer schedule will be announced soon, officinal, so cross your fingers.

Avatar 2:45pm slugluv1313:

yes Magnet and Steel one of the few "hits" i loved back then (was totally in the underground/"punk" world by the mid-70s) -- the Buckingham/Nicks vocals were like the icing on the cake
  2:46pm P-90:

yes MORE FILL-INS
  2:47pm Ochre Ogre:

Thanks Samantha, enjoyed the fill-in!
  2:47pm P-90:

Avatar 2:47pm Nick Vivid:

Did Walter Egan steal that melody from Toto's Hold the Line or vice versa?
Avatar 2:50pm Roberto:

Nick, don't you mean "steel" that melody?
Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Bruce S.:

Magnet and Steel was a big hit in the 70s. I just remember hearing it alot. nevever noticed the toy piano though

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Crudbringer:

The sounds in here right now... this is what I imagine might be playing whenever I think to tune in WFMU*. The toy-piano lore... my cultural life is a strip mall with rare portals into glorious caverns like WFMU. Such giants in this room, Samantha, Gaylord.

*Unless it's because my Saturday-morning Rex-Alarm is sounding.

What a great show, Samantha, as per usual. I have relistened (a few times) to a show you did last summer where you played a band from the Solomon Islands--the song Black Light, which I think is SO fantastic. Thanks, woman!
