Sending 18 year old Americans to go kill Vietnamese people was never patriotic.
Avatar 11:42am
Michael Shelley:

Agree - so why would Jan record "universal Coward" and then dodge the draft?

Jan Berry (1941-2004) was a member of Jan and Dean, a popular American duo who specialised in West Coast surf rock during the 1960s. Among their successful songs were Surf City, Dead Man’s Curve and The Little Old Lady from Pasadena. In late 1965 Berry penned The Universal Coward, an angry response to Donovan’s anti-war single Universal Soldier. He recorded and released it solo after his singing partner, Dean Torrence, refused to participate. The Universal Coward is a vitriolic attack on those who opposed the Vietnam War, describing them as “scroungers”, “twisted”, “fanatic” and “thick skulled”. It received little radio airplay and did not reach the charts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am

Oh, also, in the NYC is going back to normal department: Kate and I went out to dinner last night (second time!) at a place we love and, duh, had not been to in 14 months. We sat outside, on the corner, in Italian WIlliamsburg. About halfway through, a couple walked by, and Kate pointed out that the woman was completely nude except for a shawl that was draped only in front of her. I verified when they walked back by. Just seemed to be going to the bodega for a bomber stark bummed and easy living.

Welcome back, NYC.

As someone who went to school in upstate NY (the capital) we definitely used to order "subs" after our questionable dinners at the quad dining hall...I think here in NYC it's "heroes" or "subs"---never heard the other terms jn this area. It's the same with soda---some places have "pop" or other terms, & apparently, as I learned reading these messages, a "Coke" is a generic term for a soda in other parts of the country(?!).

WNEW-FM in NYC during the late ‘70s/early ‘80s was great. Sure, there were serious commercial concerns, but the special programs (usually featured late) were fantastic, and you felt the DJs still had some say regarding the playlists of their own shows.
