Cowbell! The sign of a classic!
  3:57pm paul:

Was Martin ever a member of Brinsley Schwarz?
Avatar 3:58pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@paul: Martin used to roadie for The Brinsleys! Brinsley Schwarz himself played some foreign shows as a member of Ducks Deluxe and then of course Martin & Brinsley were bandmates in The Rumour.
  3:58pm Victrola Tom:

What a lovely Ducks song that was!
  4:00pm paul:

Thanks, @Todd! I knew there had to be some kind of connection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Gaylord Fields:

Ducks Deluxe: The Beatles of Pub Rock!!!
Avatar 4:01pm David Shortell:

When I saw the Split Squad play with Stupidity at the Saint in Asbury Park four years ago, Stupidity's drummer told me that Keith Streng was moving to Stockholm. I feared that spelled the end of the Fleshtones, but evidently not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm McGroovey:

I love Please Please Please. I have first DD album, but I obviously need more.

More people should cover their songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Franco Twinkie:

When people talk about most bands I never saw, for the most part I just shrug, unless it's The Fleshtones. You lucky pups!
Avatar 4:05pm MFlynn:

Always liked “Loves’s melody”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Franco Twinkie:

Them and The Raybeats.
  4:06pm Claudia Lily:

YES!!! Love's Melody!!!
Avatar 4:06pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Franco Twinkie: You may get your chance yet with The Fleshtones!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Gaylord Fields:

Another great thing about Ducks Deluxe: They had four very strong songwriters, coupled with impeccable taste in covers! They should have been rock gods!!!
Avatar 4:08pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Claudia Lily: great tune! @Gaylord Fields: great point!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Gaylord Fields:

I'm gonna pull a Hoboken Jack and say, "Hi, Claudia Lily!"
Avatar 4:08pm MFlynn:

You’re right Gaylord. Should have gotten so much more attention than they did.
  4:09pm Claudia Lily:

Hi Gaylord!!!!!! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm listener 126464:

Hi everyone, hello Todd, cheers Hoboken Jack!
Avatar 4:09pm Ross T.:

Saw GP and the Rumour in '79 in Boston (the Paradise?). Along with the songs the guitar players were the stars for me (well, and the whole band). I loved the contrast between the two -- Brinsley in like a pressed suit and spectacles intensley focused; Martin looking like he had just rolled out of bed with a beer and cigarette and rollicking about. They were amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Gaylord Fields:

MFlynn: I know that excellent bands that flopped are a dime a dozen, but this one is a head scratcher.
  4:10pm Vertual:

Back in the 90s i went to a Fleshtones show at a bar in Florida on a Monday night - it was poorly promoted and maybe a dozen of us showed up...but the way they played you'd think it was a sell out.
Avatar 4:10pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Ross T: Wish I had been there!
  4:11pm Will C:

Holy Sixteen Blue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Dave in SoDak:

I received a gift from an old girlfriend in Seattle in '86 - a boot of an EC & Attractions live show (sounded like King Biscuit). Vintage '79. Steve Naive had broken his arm or something so they had Marty Belmont fill in. Didn't miss a beat. Frantic and truly awesome.
Avatar 4:11pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Gaylord Fields: I think they might have fared better had they come out a year or two later and been on Stiff or Chiswick instead of RCA.
Avatar 4:11pm Ross T.:

Todd -- one of my top 5 shows definitely -- Sparks had just been released and they were on fire. I actually stumbled on the gig -- just happened to be visiting an ex in Beantown (another story).
  4:13pm WM:

@Franco Twinkie: I did hear the Fleshtones when they own a battle of the bands that included the Nervus Rex and the Zantees at NYU Lobe Student Center. As I remember, the Fleshtones won.
Avatar 4:15pm MFlynn:

I remember being at that NYU battle of the bands show too thanks to Todd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm zivilars:

Fantastic show as always, Todd ... Thanks for every Saturday's show!
  4:15pm WM:

Please excuse the typo "when they won."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Gaylord Fields:

Todd, that is a great point! They would have done so well with a Dave Robinson or Jake Riviera making a fuss for them.
Avatar 4:16pm David Shortell:

The Fleshtones headlined a show at the Brighton Bar 12 years ago where most of the audience left after the Ribeye Brothers played, alas.
  4:17pm Peter Kaprelian:

He couldve said "my baby is done," it wouldve actually rhymed.
  4:23pm Tim from LH:

Martin is a very nice chap. He and Brinsley hung out in the lobby at The Newton Theater for at least a half hour with all the fans after the first GP & The Rumour reunion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Gaylord Fields:

@Peter Kaprelian: It did rhyme when the Louvin Brothers wrote and sang it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm mariano:

GenesEs!
Avatar 4:34pm MFlynn:

Kingsley Ward filled in when Dave didn’t show! Haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm MonicaC:

Gram Parker and the Rumour were so tight.
Avatar 4:38pm Ross T.:

Love this song -- that's a groove.
  4:39pm Claudia Lily:

I want to hear that song about Pensacola, I like it for vacation but I can't imagine any rock'n'rollers romanticizing that place. haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm medson:

Great interview so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm marpay:

HI Todd - lurking and dropped in to hang out, and glad to have such good company♥
Avatar 4:40pm Fredericks:

Graham Parker & the Rumour brought to mind Springsteen. I asked myself what the connecting thread was. I answered: Van Morrison.
  4:41pm Mike Sin:

Great interview! In the US, the “Dont Mind Rockin Tonight” album was the easiest way to get an overview of the band. That LP was a staple of used bins in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
Avatar 4:41pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Claudia Lily: Like Martin says...it's a fantasy!
Avatar 4:41pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Fredericks: You nailed it!
Avatar 4:42pm MFlynn:

“Heat Treatment” was such a great album!!!
  4:42pm AS from MP:

Lew Lewis Reformer (looking back an hour ago) recorded on Stiff Records
Avatar 4:43pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Mike Sin: Strange thing that compilation even came out...I guess RCA somehow thought they could capitalize on the subsequent success of some people involved in that scene.
Avatar 4:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In other words - the Pub was not the Arena ? It was Rawk up-close on Saturday again, maybe ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Listen, I ain't a pet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Gaylord Fields:

A token hipster for your monopoly set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Luv this revved up vers.
Avatar 4:49pm Joe B:

does graham parker have the record for being on the most major labels? at least, being on the most and complaining about the most!
Avatar 4:51pm slugluv1313:

"Fool's Gold" one of the most beautiful, heartfelt songs EVER <3 <3 <3

greetings, Todd and Skeletons and Everyone!
just tuning in now, bummer i missed so much of the show (thank goodness for WFMU archives!)

saw Graham Parker and The Rumour numerous times way back when -- amazing shows

and i gotta look, but i think i still have this "Mercury Poisoning" 45 -- iirc, it is on blue vinyl, and you had to cut some number/code off the LP cover, mail it in, and you got the 45 mailed to you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Barkevious Shabazz:

The GP&TR live reunion video a few yrs back was pretty aces.
Avatar 4:53pm Fredericks:

I wish that guitar didn't have that effect on it. Not a bad sound, but it dates it.
  4:53pm Steady Eddie:

Just wondering if Martin played on any Kirsty MaCColl records?
  4:54pm DG:

slugluv: Yes, you had to cut that off the cover & send away to Arista (or some affiliated co.) & you got a 7inch 33 1/3 single of "Mercury Poisoning" with "I Want You Back" on the other side. I think I picked mine up in the Village though.
  4:55pm PJ:

XTC were on a lot of different labels in the US (Virgin US, RSO, Epic, Geffen, TVT) and Andy Partridge complained about every one of them, but GP has them beat (Mercury, Arista, Atlantic, RCA, Razor & Tie, Bloodshot, Universal) by a few labels.
  4:56pm DG:

...and I assume the version of "Mercury Poisoning" we just heard was from the "Live Sparks" album, not the single.

@Joe B: "I've got Arista-ritis!" "I've got RCAIDS!" etc.
Avatar 4:56pm Joe B:

@PJ - GP was also on Elektra for one record!
Avatar 4:56pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Correct @DG...my bad!
Avatar 4:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Joe Strummer perhaps the most obvious Venn overlap in the PubRawk / Punk transition... if not the entire Stiff label...
Avatar 4:57pm Joe B:

@Stewady Eddie - at least one live album
  4:57pm pgalub:

I DON'T got Universal... Healthcare. ;)
  4:57pm PJ:

@Joe B: I knew I'd missed one!
Avatar 4:57pm Joe B:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Bryant in TO:

@RevRabbit Yeah, Elgin Avenue Breakdown was my gateway to pub rock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Barkevious Shabazz:

EFD played Emotional Traffic a few months back. Sounded purty good.
Avatar 4:59pm Joe B:

GP also had one or two on Capitol - burning questions, maybe one other ...
Avatar 5:00pm Ross T.:

EMI!!!

  5:00pm DG:

Yes, the Elektra album (Steady Nerves, there's also a non-LP b-side) is pretty good, the 2 RCA ones are even better (he also did a solo live album on RCA). Never made an album for Atlantic, although he was signed to them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm McGroovey:

Huh. I didn't think of Frozen Years as being a standout track on that album. For me, it's Emotional Traffic. I wasn't a WPIX listener.
  5:00pm PJ:

Just checked the internet - that GP Elektra LP, Steady Nerves, had his only US Top 40 single, "Wake Up (Next to You)". If only he'd used parentheses in the titles of his other singles, he might have had a few more hits.
Avatar 5:01pm Ross T.:

Graham's RCA albums are very overlooked in my opinion -- particularly "Struck by Lightning".
Avatar 5:01pm Joe B:

agreed Ross

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm McGroovey:

I love the first two Parkerless Rumour albums. The third one has never grabbed me.
  5:12pm Tim from LH:

The Rumour also backed up Garland Jeffries after GP left them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Micheal:

Fantastic interview, thanks. I blew off my senior prom to see GP and the Rumour at Lupo's in Providence in '79, right after Squeezing Out Sparks came out. They were total pros and put on a good show. It was worth ditching the prom.
  5:14pm phat in Lincoln:

Love this interview.
Avatar 5:14pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Michael: Sounds like you have better memories of the show than you likely would have of the prom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Micheal:

@Todd-o-phonic Todd: Without a doubt. Thanks for the interview!
Avatar 5:19pm Ross T.:
