'Afternoon, Handy, what's new?

David: Not really, this is hell week, but once it's out of the way it'll be more or less back to normal. I have the first draft of 72 illustrations for a book to complete by Friday (a little more than halfway there), plus I let myself get roped into a couple of weeks with Microsoft, revamping a user's guide. But because of all that, a few bands will be a little happier and a little richer on Bandcamp Friday. How are things over there?

I'm not a Wilco fan but this song is pretty great. Is their other stuff like this?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm mariano:

sphere: I'm strictly a graphic designer. A lot of the times clients will try to rope me into wordsmithing, till I tell them that I'd of course have to add an appropriate surcharge for expanding the scope of the project and that it would slow everything down. I'm fine with fixing obvious typos, but let the proofers and editors worry about the content.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Handy Haversack:

We don't have feelings anyway, Mariano.

Handy: Oh yeah, I should send them your way! I have no eye for proofing, I know this well after years of working with teams of eagle-eyed proofers who will catch an 8-point comma that isn't italicized when it should be.
  3:42pm jesse in illinois:

I became eligible at the end of January, but I haven't been able to find a shot until now. I found one in Gloucester Country, and then suddenly, in the past week, I've gotten 3 more "your turn!" emails. It never rains, but it pours. I don't need to go all the way to Gloucester County anymore.

@ami are you in NJ? I feel like things are getting easier in NJ suddenly
Avatar 3:59pm βrian:

Preclude all vectors, I say. Anybody who can get a shot, should do it a.s.a.p.

Then do what you can to help others get their shot(s).

My son lives near Albany. He has to go all the way up Utica for his shot (2 hours away). I think NY opened things up to fast for younger people before older people and people with health vulnerabilities found shots, so now people in NY have to do the equivalent of driving to Gloucester County.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Barney Grubbs:

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm mariano:

Good going, Little Danny.

I was very pleasantly surprised at how quick and easy it was here in New Orleans, it's not really known for its efficiency. Went to the LCMC site, picked a date, and on the day of, last Saturday, it was in and out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Little Danny:

Yeah that Johnny Dowd was great. I couldn't quite place his accent but he sounded like some burnt Texas dudes I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Scott Williams:

Kelly Jones! Owe you an email, I do - and yeah, let's talk about how mindblowing Johnny Dowd is! Ithaca's very own

It was just Johnny Dowd's birthday a few days ago. From Texas, but now lives in Upstate NY. I saw him open for The Mekons twice and solo a couple of times. Always great. Check out the documentary In Search Of The Wrong-Eyed jesus; he is featured, along with Jim White, Harry Crews, Handsome Family and Melissa Swingle.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Handy Haversack:

ami ad, sure. They're a for-profit and fairly large, a part of Macmillan. So there's going to be chaff with the wheat at that level and volume. They have a few different imprints, and I don't know a ton about them, really just some of the nonfiction that I encounter in scholarly bibliographies. But they are certainly respected and seem generally respectable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm J-W:

yes, Jim White was just going to mention him. I liked that one eyed Jesus movie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm McGroovey:

@Kelly Jones I don't understand that sentence about condoms and Ithaca. They do sell them in Ithaca, but I'm not sure if that's relevant.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm McGroovey:

@Ken FHP I lived in Albany for 8 years (hence the son), and I don't get the Albany/ham thing.

Utica's food things are "chicken riggies" (which involves chicken and rigatoni), and cutting a round pizza into square slices.

Albany? I don't remember any native food quirks in Albany.

I'm immediately uninterested in foods items that have garbage or dump in their name. Or crack. Like Crack Fries or Crack Pie.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Handy Haversack:

That I don't know, Mariano. I only know that when an older guy came in and ordered a cabinet and I said, "Well, I'd love to make you one, but this is a cafe, and I just don't have the tools" and he said, "But sure you do, they're right there. Make it chocolate," and I said, "Now that's a talent I wish I had," we might have set the record for two people just goggling at each other in a New England cafe. Eventually we found common ground, though.

A handful of years ago I was in Newport with my ex, and he was at some stupid dinner, so I looked online for cheap local food. I found myself at a neighborhood cafeteria sorta place in Fall River that was an incredible and very specific experience. Orange formica, really weird patrons, a handsome young guy behind the counter with a thick accent, and awesome cheap food I'd never had before. I ate SO MANY things. They all were, like $2.

FWIW, JBoogie, the Moderna dose I got didn't do anything to me, just a little soreness in the arm for a day. It's normal though for vaccines to make you slightly ill, since they're designed to make your system produce antibodies.

Like Mariano, I'll chime in with my Moderna experience, so far. I did not feel the needle at all, which was a mitzvah. Later in the day my arm was sore enough that I took a few ibuprofen before bed, which worked like a charm and I slept well. My arm was sore the next day but only if I poked it. A few days later, though, I got a pretty big headache. Thinking it was a migraine coming on, I took some OTC migraine meds. They did nothing. Later on I drank two pint glasses of ice water with lime wedges. 20 minutes later, no headache. I'm planning to be ill for Prick#2, and I know that it's just my antibodies activating.

Yeah, never forget that the long lead times in development for many medicines are a *construct*, the result of lots of money and lots of interests looking to maximize their returns, not *ours*. This is just a slight shift toward the *us* in a tiny specific instance. There's no "rightness" to a longer development time -- only the massive resources devoted to more profitable matters instead most of the time.

Hi PRB, haven’t seen you in a bit. That Passaic River book has been a hot topic lately

Doug, I was thinking again about the author and publisher seeing a sudden spike in sales. "It's coming from this radio station in Jersey City!"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Doug in JC:

Haha exactly. I wonder what kind of numbers the initial pressing had
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Doug in JC:

PRB yes and no. We were talking about it and a lot of people were interested and ordered it

Never argue with a fool because some people
will not be able to tell the difference.
Maybe the virus will help mankind see one another as brothers. I swear it’s not too late...

  5:53pm Listener Robert:

Rev Rabbit, what makes you think the number of persons infected has much effect on the rapidity of development of virus mutations? RNA replication (this is an RNA virus) is inherently "noisy" (unfaithful), so there are always plenty of mutants available. What's limiting is the selection. It's the development of treatments and immunity that applies the selection pressure for resistant strains to come out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Passaic River Blues:

@Dough/Handy: haha! That's great! I met her at the NPL branch library down neck on Van Buren Street I want to say in 2013 or 2014. Very cool that book got a bump! I wanted to trace the river's source like she did but I just wandered around the Great Swamp.

Listener Robert: If fewer people are infected there is less opportunity for a virus to mutate. Is it not that simple? Perhaps what you say is over my head. Perhaps it is obfuscating jargon. The fault there may be mine - but of this moment I remain unconvinced.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm PaulRobeson1920:

Peace and LoVe, ya’ll!
  6:00pm Listener Robert:

The virus mutates so much in any individual that it doesn't matter how many people are infected. Think of the number of cells infected, not the number of humans.
  6:02pm Listener Robert:

In other words, the number of mutations is always in vast excess, but they're selected for only as people's cells become resistant to infection.
