I was thinking about Monk's mental illness last night. I was listening to Thelonious Himself (1957), and felt I heard a playfulness and aliveness there that seemed to fade over time, as if he went into hiding behind his own image.

	🥁 ♥ 10:53am adamdoesit: Diagnoses are easy. :) To say that he was totally unique, deeply rooted in musical tradition, and badly damaged by his contact with American society would be to describe not just Monk but a great many of his peers.

I was thinking about Monk's mental illness last night. I was listening to Thelonious Himself (1957), and felt I heard a playfulness and aliveness there that seemed to fade over time, as if he went into hiding behind his own image.
