Avatar 11:54am Sean in Bristol UK:

Good evening Irene, hello one and all, that photo is a thing of beauty and tranquility
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Irene Trudel:

Welcome Sean and all listening in today!
  11:59am uptowner:

yup - there's something about central park in winter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Brian in UK:

Hello Irene, Sean & uptowner. The days are getting ever so slightly longer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Irene and all! That view's a lovely reminder of what we'll be able to enjoy, hopefully soon.
Avatar 12:02pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Hello Irene, and listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Tome:

Hello Irene and everyone ,,, always a lovely breath of fresh air and joy !<>!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm YETI BOB:

Happy Martin Luther Dap-King Jr Day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Irene Trudel:

Hey hey uptowner, Brian, james, Sylvia, Tome and YETI BOB! Yes, I'm already looking forward to the end of winter. Can you tell by the picture I want to be outdoors?
Avatar 12:08pm northguineahills:

I always thought Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones should have collaborated......
  12:08pm bigplanetnoise:

Hola, Irene and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Irene Trudel:

Hey northguineahills and bigplanetnoise! I'd like to think Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones are collaborating in the afterlife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm YETI BOB:

Last time I was in Central Park (~10 years ago) it was January and it was so warm I was walking around in a t-shirt and sandals.
Avatar 12:12pm northguineahills:

(At least I got to see Sharon record in the booth w/ the Roots [friend who was an engineer tipped me off, and asked me to come over')
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm doctorjazz:

Hey, I just pulled out my Taj box set and listened to this last night! Love these CDs!
Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Irene Trudel:

northguineahills, that's so cool! I had the honor of mixing a couple of sessions with Sharon for Soundcheck. She was such a great person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm doctorjazz:

(have the early LPs too..)
Happy MLK day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Irene Trudel:

doctorjazz, you can't go wrong with Taj's upbeat music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm doctorjazz:

Pulled out out because of Howard Johnson, what a crazy idea, putting together a blues/soup band with a four tuna gotten section!
Avatar 12:19pm northguineahills:

I can't have a GTDS stream on MLK Jr Day w/o Coltrane's, "Alabama" (Doug started the traditiom)/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm doctorjazz:

Got to see Gravity, and Johnson with the Monday a night Gil Evans Orchestra at Sweet Basils back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm doctorjazz:

(and with The Band in their horn section)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Irene Trudel:

northguineahills, I have some Coltrane on deck in a bit but not Alabama. Maybe at the end of the show. doctorjazz, I saw Gravity a couple of times, and have seen Howard play with other ensembles. Such a loss!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm doctorjazz:

I found a Gravity CD in my rack from 1997, I'll put it on later (features Taj)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm doctorjazz:

Just skimming the NY Times, man, is it depressing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm doctorjazz:

Beautiful, soothing sounds do help...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Irene Trudel:

I skimmed the NYT this morning and had to put it aside too. Raised my stress level too much.
  12:52pm ?:

What an absolutely magnificent set this is.
  12:52pm Peter K.:

Oops -- forgot to identify myself. That last comment was mine.
Avatar 12:55pm Constant Follower:

Sublime. Loved that Bobby Hutcherson & Harold Land. New to me. Thanks Irene! and hello :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Irene Trudel:

Thank you Peter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm doctorjazz:

New to me too (note to self: check out more Bobby Hutcherson)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Irene Trudel:

Oh, Bobby is sublime! Lots of clips with him on YouTube too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Irene Trudel:

Welcome Constant Follower!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm fred:

Irene, if the NYT or anything else stresses you too much, I'd recommend listening to your show. Works for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Irene Trudel:

Too kind, fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Deborah:

Love the mood and that David Darling and John Coltrane come together. Saw Taj Mahal at the Filmore with Roberta Flack (1971). It was an electrically beautiful concert that went on for hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Irene Trudel:

Wow, Deborah, that must've been quite a performance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm fred:

More Max Roach is always welcome (no, Stork's tribute didn't slake my thirst)
  1:40pm uptowner:

perfect track for the holiday
  1:43pm Dean:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm listener james from westwood:

Yay for Lonnie Holley!
  1:47pm uptowner:

also perfect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm fred:

I'm still amazed I got to see Lonnie Holley perform live. I'm sure WFMU played a role in raising his profile
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Irene Trudel:

Dean, that playbill for Taj and Roberta is a nice find!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Deborah:

Dean:
Yes! It was phenomenal. Leon Thomas is incredible, whether he played with Pharaoh Sanders or solo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm watchpocket:

I've apparently done the right thing today: I avoided the NY Times and turned Irene's show on. Does anyone remember the '80s mag "Lies of the Times"? Its title was in the same germanic font as the Times's, and it specialized in pointing out -- you guessed it -- all the lies that appeared in the NY Times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Irene Trudel:

My work today seems totally on target, watchpocket. Thanks!
  1:57pm uptowner:

I deal with the news the way we do with other messy, but necessary chores one has to do - like bathrom functions, floor scrubbing, etc. That is, you get in there, do what you have to do... then move on
  2:00pm Dean:

An alternative framework of views c/o MLK, Jr.: https://quillette.com/2021/01/17/three-plane-rides-and-the-quest-for-a-just-society/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm watchpocket:

@Dean Judging from that Fillmore East playbill, one might think that colorful psychedelic posters had become passe by '71. It looks -- strangely -- more like a wedding invitation.
  2:02pm uptowner:

@dean - thanks, I'll read it later tonite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm watchpocket:

You are so welcome, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, thanks Dean for that MLK, Jr. link.
  2:09pm Dean:

You're welcome, all. It's a great read, introduces little known background about King, and engages trending ideologies of our time.

Here's an ad for Fillmore East just a month prior to the show with Roberta Flack: https://concerts.fandom.com/wiki/January_15-16,_1971_Fillmore_East,_New_York_City,_NY?file=Image-1494882724.jpg Slight flourish, but not much. Compare this bill from late '69: https://concerts.fandom.com/wiki/November_27-30,_1969_Fillmore_West,_San_Francisco,_CA?file=Image-1496600734.jpg
  2:10pm Dean:

The Preston piece, by the way, is c/o Brian Leiter's philosophy blog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm listener james from westwood:

Mary Lattimore's latest has been such a comfort since its release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Brian in UK:

fred, Lonnie Holley is something live, saw him at Cafe Oto an arms length away. On the day that Nelson Mandela passed though we did not know it at the time.
  2:15pm Dean:

For harp, my go-to has been Andrew Lawrence-King, whose two early solo recitals are amazing, Harp Music of the Italian Renaissance, and The Harp of Luduvíco. His ensemble work is spectacular, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Irene Trudel:

Mary and Lonnie are both beautiful and worth seeing live if you get a chance. Their performances are so totally in the moment. Dean, I'm not familiar with Andrew. Thanks for the suggestion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm listener james from westwood:

And there's the other massive soul booster of an album in my lineup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm watchpocket:

@Dean Bill Graham clearly didn't bother to find great poster designers in NYC. Odd, in that they surely existed.
  2:22pm Dean:

Lawrence-King's discography is vast. He plays on one of the shortlist of records I consider perhaps the very best of all time, Tragicomedia's Notenbüchlein Für Anna Magdalena Bach – A Selection

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm doctorjazz:

Thanks for that link Irene, (and the MLK link, Dean).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, these streaming concerts have been saving my sanity. I also recommend checking out the four nights of Global Fest, which are still available on You Tube (I'll post the link in a moment or two).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Irene Trudel:

Here's the link: globalfest.org...
  2:35pm Linda Lee:

so glad hearing you today, Irene! cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm fred:

I so wish I can see Mary Lattimore someday. But venues and festivals are in survival mode now, and I'd be so happy to see a local band I've seen many times before at this point
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Irene Trudel:

Next week I plan to air a few of the great finds from Global Fest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Linda Lee!
  2:37pm uptowner:

The Golden Festival had some very nice (and necessary) streams also, now archived: https://goldenfest.org/category/allmedia,audio,video,story,review/ - on the Free Music Archive, no less!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm doctorjazz:

I have to say, really miss live music, but haven't been able to listen/watch many streams. I'd generally rather put on recordings. Makes me miss concerts more...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Deborah:

Didn't know that about David Darling. His music works for meditation etc.
  2:42pm Linda Lee:

holy crow. this is just the sound vibe needed as we spin & struggle. healing, mending. beautiful! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Deborah:

doctorjazz

I hear you and feel the same way re concerts, streams, and putting on a record or cd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Irene Trudel:

Past Golden Festivals that we broadcast on Rob W.'s Transpacific Sound Paradise are also archived through his playlists.www.wfmu.org...
  2:43pm uptowner:

It took me a while to get used to live streams - and I still only put them on occasionally - but when they're good, they're good + it's nice to have them
  2:43pm uptowner:

just think of them as little ephemeral radio stations
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Irene Trudel:

doctorjazz, we plug my laptop into our bigscreen TV and watch that way. Still not the same as in person, but I can lose myself in the performances for a little while with the lights turned off.
  2:46pm Linda Lee:

there goes a freight train through the prairie here, right behind these tones. a cool mix! sometimes it seems the world is *always* in performance. ;-)
  2:47pm Linda Lee:

if we just shift our framing a bit..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Irene Trudel:

Music is woven into our lives in so many ways, Linda Lee!
  2:47pm uptowner:

exactly, linda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm doctorjazz:

Can't wait until it gets a bit warmer, and outdoor live music comes back.
I've used the big flat screen for Richard Thompson and others... If he couldn't do it for me...
(Then there's the vaccine... Fingers crossed)
  2:48pm Linda Lee:

yes it is!!! a blessing always. :-)
  2:49pm uptowner:

this pandemic is the planet's way of reminding us that we need to slow down and listen to what's around us
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Brian in UK:

doctorjazz. The Richard Thompson vaccine? Sorry my friend there is no cure for Mr T.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm doctorjazz:

:-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Brian in UK:

Irene, as ever a demanding delight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm doctorjazz:

I've got chronic Thompsonitis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Brian in UK:

You will have to get your beret surgically removed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Irene Trudel:

Thank you all for floating along on my stream today. I think we all needed this bit of peace in our lives. Catch you all next Monday at noon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Irene, lovely show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Rick from SC:

It was a great show as usual
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, Irene!
  2:56pm uptowner:

nice work, Irene. waking up this morning, I felt like a zombie... I feel infinitely better now
Avatar 2:57pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Sound dyna-mix up next: "Hang Onto a Dream (America)". With Noam Chomsky, George W. Bush, Shell Oil, the NSA, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Barack Obama, Jello Biafra, John Lennon...and Neil Diamond.

Join the chat here! wfmu.org...
  2:58pm uptowner:

@dean - am noting your harp recommendations in my Notenbüchlein
  3:00pm Dean:

If I were Oprah, I'd give everybody a copy of that Tragicomedia record. This perhaps explains why I'm not Oprah.
Avatar 3:47am Sean in Bristol UK:

Wasn’t pleased getting called into work while your wonderful show is on, thank goodness for archive, great show as always, Irene, thank you
  2:34pm Marie:

Hi Irene! That Taj Mahal song alone was "worth the price of admission." Thanks for the great show!
