Favoriting December 18, 2020: (No Archive for this episode) A 2 hour Experimental Christmas tribute to favorite WFMU inspired CD-R label "Oddest Recordings"
Playing the entire Christmas catalog of Oddest Recordings mixed with tracks from almost every project created by artist Mark Gillespie. A favorite DIY label from my days at Oddity Rock Radio on KWCR 88.1 FM in the early 2000s. - BC Sterrett (aka Herk Hilligoss) **************************************************************************************** I created the Oddest label in 2001, somewhat inspired by some of the cool and strange music I was hearing on WFMU at the time. I had been doing experimental multi-track recording for years and thought it would be fun to release some of my weird sounds under the guises of different artists, so Oddest Recordings was born. I’m a professional graphic designer/illustrator, so I designed all the covers myself. It was a lot of fun and I got more recognition than I ever thought I would, including air play on WFMU." - Mark Gillespie

Hi BC! Listening...
Avatar 2:07pm
Herk Hilligoss:

Hi Mark! Can you tell us about the inspiration/creation behind some of these releases?
Avatar 2:08pm
Mark Gillespie:

Axo? Shooby Taylor, heard on WFMU.
Avatar 2:08pm
Herk Hilligoss:

Tell us about Axo Sonac :)
Avatar 2:09pm
Herk Hilligoss:

Ha, I wondered about the Shooby Taylor connection. Wonderful.
Avatar 2:11pm
Mark Gillespie:

I would say that the Residents are also an obvious influence when it comes to most of this stuff.

Hey ! Just poppin in to say I’m loving this music so far!

Thanks Solo Mon :)

Herk Hilligoss:

Was this chopping segment inspired by Fred Lane's Mystic Tune?
Avatar 2:15pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I often do this of The Residents with your music, especially with the Soundbitten Orchestra. Do you have a favorite Residents song or album?
Avatar 2:17pm
Mark Gillespie:

I can't say I'm familiar with that tune so...I guess not. My favorite album is the first, Meet The Residents.
Avatar 2:18pm
Herk Hilligoss:

Love it.
Avatar 2:19pm
Herk Hilligoss:

This really is one of the greatest Christmas albums that I turn to each year.
Avatar 2:20pm
Mark Gillespie:

I'm glad you like it.
Avatar 2:21pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I think I first found out about you by Otis Fodder's Cool and Strange Music CD review of "Hooked on Casio." Do you still have that keyboard?
Avatar 2:22pm
Mark Gillespie:

More Residential inspiration. Inspired by the musical deconstructionism of cover tunes on albums like Third Reich and roll.
Avatar 2:24pm
Mark Gillespie:

I still have the Casiotone380, but got rid of the MT 520 when I had to move recently.
Avatar 2:25pm
Herk Hilligoss:

Maybe it was a bad idea to have The Clock Strikes host, it made this episode harder for listeners to find I think, until it show up in the archive. Oh well, there will be more episodes of this stuff :)

Avatar 2:29pm

Hi GrannY!
Avatar 2:29pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I have to ask, was The 12 Days of Christmas inspired by The Conet Project or Short Wave Number Stations?
Avatar 2:34pm
Mark Gillespie:

It does sound like short wave number stations. I hadn't thought about that. It's basically breaking down the song to it's most mathematical component. 12 Days is basically a countdown.
Avatar 2:36pm
Mark Gillespie:

Zatumba was inspired by Screaming Jay Hawkins and the Tasmanian Devil from the Warner Bros cartoons.
Avatar 2:37pm
Herk Hilligoss:

Ha!

Listeners if you were able to find today's episode, feel free to ask Mark some questions if you like :)
Avatar 2:38pm
Herk Hilligoss:

Can you tell us about the creative process behind some of these collage experimental tracks?
Avatar 2:42pm
Mark Gillespie:

I guess I just start with a basic "musical" theme and fill in the cracks around it with whatever seems to work at the moment. Samples, sound fx, other themes. Trying to make it flow as much as possible.
Avatar 2:44pm
Herk Hilligoss:

The Merman Suite is also one of my favorite of the CDs. A masterpiece :)

What does your family think about your music? What kind of feedback have you recieved?
Avatar 2:55pm
Mark Gillespie:

Ha! Most of them scratch their heads, but it hasn't led to an intervention or anything. But i've been interviewed a couple of times,
reviews for my stuff popped up in numerous zines and I've gotten quite a bit of airplay over the years. I've also sold far more CDs than I ever thought I would.
Avatar 2:57pm
Herk Hilligoss:

What year was the last release? Do you still record today?
  2:59pm
VaLRose:

Hi

I think Kraftwurst or We Three Things were the last. Oh yeah I still record. I've got tons of stuff that I haven't released.

Hi James :)
Avatar 3:04pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I felt honored to be mentioned in your Cool and Strange Music ads :)
Avatar 3:04pm

A lot of it would probably qualify. Maybe someday I'll release more Oddest stuff.
Avatar 3:05pm
Mark Gillespie:

I was honored to have the best holiday album of 2001.
Avatar 3:07pm
Mark Gillespie:

Frightville was just an attempt to create an all purpose Halloween album using samples, sound FX and public domain stuff.
Avatar 3:07pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I think several of your albums like Axo Sonac made my top 10 lists of the year. I love all of them really.
Avatar 3:09pm
Mark Gillespie:

I think you might have been the first person to play my stuff.
Avatar 3:10pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I really do hope you release more. I would always jump for joy when your CDs came in the mail :) I loved the art designs and concepts. I'm a very physical media collector.
Avatar 3:11pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I love the physical object I mean. I still have many of them that survived my horrible car accident in the snow, but they have some water damage etc.

Of all your projects which would you say is your favorite so far?
  3:20pm

@Mark Gillespie if you happen to have a PC you too can play Evel Knievel for free with Visual Pinball
Avatar 3:21pm
Mark Gillespie:

I like Feliz Avant Garde or The Merman Suite.
  3:21pm

I'm streaming myself live playing pinball with this show's audio hehe on facebook
Avatar 3:22pm

Horror Hillbilly, I'll look into that.

Herk Hilligoss:

I could see this song being played by Dr. Demento. You seemed sad feeling like he has never played your music.
Avatar 3:24pm
Mark Gillespie:

Maybe I was just too weird for him, oh well.
Avatar 3:24pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I can't really see him playing much experimental music. You're more WFMU material :)
  3:25pm
Horror Hillbilly:

Dr. Demento came to my work once. It was fun hanging out with him.
Avatar 3:25pm
Mark Gillespie:

I loved his show. I hold no grudge.

Hi Herk and Mark. Listening in and flashing back. I remember Hooked on Casio from C&SM days.

Hi Otis! I was talking earlier about how your review of Hooked on Casio was my introduction :)
Avatar 3:28pm

Wow, nice to hear from you, Otis. I remember that review too.

I miss that magazine.

Sorry missed most the show, last day at work here before the holidays. Will for sure be listening in the archives as I played the hell out of Hooked on Casio years back. Need to fill my archives again with Oddest material.
Avatar 3:31pm
Herk Hilligoss:

You got mention in some of his liner notes Otis :) See photo.
Avatar 3:32pm

Herk, is "The Clock Strikes Midnight" on hiatus at the moment aside of this fill-in? I like your show, would be nice if it will be back soon
Avatar 3:43pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I had to stop The Clock Strikes when work took over. I became harder to juggle two shows. Every now and then I turn into Herk like Jeckle and Hyde. Perhaps I'll bring it back when life slows down or have it take over Lost Media Archive completely for a spell :)
Avatar 3:44pm
zivilars:

:) I love both, keep it up!
Avatar 3:45pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I'm working like 4 jobs now off and on :/ Trying to raise money for life stuff. Thanks for the encouragement Zivilars :)
Avatar 3:46pm
Herk Hilligoss:

Mark, PLEASE release some of your more recent material! I've never been able to get enough :)
  3:48pm
Horror Hillbilly:

@Herk I think you need to get another job and save up for a pinball machine and then quit all your other jobs so you can just stay home and flip the silver ball
Avatar 3:49pm
Mark Gillespie:

Ha, I'll see what I can do. The decline of physical media sales is one of the reasons I haven't released any CDs for a while. Also a lot of sales came from C & SM magazine and when that stopped publishing I kind of stopped too.
Avatar 3:52pm
Herk Hilligoss:

Well you definitely have an outlet here. I would still purchase CDs from you and I think the other DJs would appreciate your music even in file format.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
ironybread:

Mark - do you have a BandCamp page? Putting albums on BandCamp is super easy and you'll never have to deal with any physical media. When you put up a zillion albums, it's all the better! Brian Fullerton Whitman has a zillion of them up and I'm having a blast just slowly listening to everything in "preview" mode
  3:53pm
Horror Hillbilly:

And Bandcamp seems to be a pretty good company so far. They make a profit and pay artists (Spotify does neither)
Avatar 3:53pm
Mark Gillespie:

ironybread, I don't. I'll look into that.
Avatar 3:53pm
Otis Oddest Fodderist:

Nice Ironybread! A Oddest Bandcamp would be fantastic.
Avatar 3:55pm
Herk Hilligoss:

I agree :)
Avatar 3:55pm
Otis Oddest Fodderist:

Personally, I love Bandcamp (for my own stuff + listening/ordering). Hoping more artists move from Facebook to Bandcamp.. esp now after rolling out the ability for live vids. And direct money into artist/label pockets.
