I knew there was a Japanese-Peruvian population but I don't remember why they emigrated there.
Avatar 8:07pm
glenn:

because the mennonites had already taken over mexico.
Avatar 8:08pm
northguineahills:

@melinda it started before WWII b/c of overpopulation was higher then even their stellar economy could handle, but after the war in most Japanese emigres went to Peru or Brazil (the US didn't look as inviting, for obvious reasons, except Hawai'i).
Avatar 8:09pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
melinda:

Are there a lot of mennonites in Mexico? Immigration/emigration patterns are so interesting.
Avatar 8:10pm
northguineahills:

In Peru, it was mostly Japanese fishermen (similar ecosystem) before the war. That was the root emigre population.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
melinda:

ngh that makes sense.
Avatar 8:16pm
glenn:

yep. they were recruited from canada to basically teach mexicans how to farm profitably. because hey, if you can farm in manitoba, with a six week growing season, you can farm anywhere.
Avatar 8:22pm
Little Danny:

@melinda: We're 60 minutes from the border here in west Texas, and they're a pretty common sight here in the local convenience stores. Cool to overhear very germanic-looking white people speaking Spanish. Also hi!

Avatar 8:34pm
still b/p:

There's a reflexive expectation, when seeing the mode of dress, that Mennonites will be located close to Amish on the culture and technology maps....but then you see Mennonites zipping up to the shore in a little outboard, and see the modern full-size bus coach that brought them for their outing at the lake (Sebago, Melinda). Heard this discussed a number of times, but don't know the particular rules & practices.

@b/p yeah, there is a Mennonite farmer couple that comes to the farmers' market, too, with a truck. And of course many Mennonites don't wear the old-timey threads at all.

Now the winter market is out in the Maine Girls' Academy, formerly Catherine Macauley. Don't know how that's working out for all the peninsula people.

I heard a Quechua potato song about 25 years ago or more that stuck in my head a long time. Did I miss anything like that in the first 90 minutes night?
