Ignoring Osibisa and King Sunny Ade, which was obviously floating around at the time, my 'gateway' to non-english music was via a trip to East Africa and encountering soukous and benga. Back in London there was only one shop that sold the stuff, a poky little place called Stern's. That was in 1982.
