Heya Mary and future Wingnuts. Looking forward to the little records with the big holes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 12:06pm doctorjazz:

100% singles?
Hi Mary and all.
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 12:06pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Carmicheal, doctor jazz, and everyone else who is tuning in! I'll be wildly flapping my arms around these 2 turntables, so excuse me if I'm not too chatty here.
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 12:08pm Sem Chumbo:

Hello, Mary, Whatever fanciers. Ready to Wing it for next few hours, 45s-style.
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 12:15pm geezerette:

Howdy, Mary and 100%-ers! I'll be wildly flapping my ears! :D
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 12:16pm geezerette:

Carm! Doc! Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 12:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I hope all those singles don't tax the DJ's Wing span. Har!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 12:25pm Carmichael:

Viv Stanshall is one of my faves!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 12:36pm doctorjazz:

Hitting the clicky stars!
Hi Geez!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 12:54pm doctorjazz:

Interesting how the DJ's single collections sound little like their album collections...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 12:54pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Mary, 100%ers
- good to hear this ol' chestnut again
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 12:59pm Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

Damn, missed Viv? Hate these idiopathic fugue states.
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 1:04pm Mary Wing:

D'OH!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:05pm coelacanth∅:

seeing you started with the undisputed truth's ball of confusion, the temps' version being the first 45 i ever bought, in fact. (speaking of "singles"- or "45s" as we always called them)
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 1:08pm Mary Wing:

Doctorjazz, most of these are NOT from my collection, heh. I found some boxes in the basement where we keep the stuff for the record fair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:08pm coelacanth∅:

wow Great track! never heard it except from the shaved fish album - so far just the same.
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 1:09pm Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

Likewise^,
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 1:10pm Mary Wing:

Was that a skip in the record?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:11pm coelacanth∅:

yes.
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 1:13pm Mary Wing:

Bummer. I'll try to fix that for the archive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:13pm coelacanth∅:

hey Sweet Essence of Giraffe(...so, "SEG Chumbo"?!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 1:14pm doctorjazz:

Skips and surface noise are part of the vinyl charm.
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 1:15pm Mary Wing:

Surface noise and pops, sure, but not skips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, too many skips spoils the broth.
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 1:22pm Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

The one and the same, old fish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 1:29pm doctorjazz:

Agree on too many skips, but occasionally not too bad (unless it's MY vinyl! Then I can't stand it!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:34pm Jeff Golick:

Groove me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:36pm Carmichael:

Quite the eclectic show Ms. Wing. Carpal clicky-star syndrome ...
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 1:38pm Mary Wing:

Heh, thanks! I was worried about having only 2 turntables instead of 3 (easier to preview stuff with 3), but so far it's working out pretty well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:39pm Jeff Golick:

Timeless, deathless Jim Carroll Band! I had this LP; shoulda just had the single.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:39pm Webhamster Henry:

Even Jim Carroll died!
  Wed. 10/18/17 1:41pm Listener142985:

Darn bikers.
  Wed. 10/18/17 1:51pm rw:

Hello!

Hey, we were having a discussion at work yesterday. When one refers to a modern woman, does that mean a contemporary woman or a woman of the modern age (mid 20th century)?
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 1:52pm Mary Wing:

Hi rw, thanks for your pledge last week!

The same question could be asked about the adjective "classical," I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:53pm Webhamster Henry:

Nando tumbles for you!
  Wed. 10/18/17 1:55pm Dean:

OED entry for "modern," adj., 3.b.: "Of a person or (occasionally) something personified: up to date in behaviour, outlook, opinions, etc.; embracing innovation and new ideas; liberal-minded. Esp. in modern girl, modern woman."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 1:59pm Ike:

Greetings, humans.
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:02pm rw:

Mary, you're welcome!

Dean, that definition seems more mid 20th century than contemporary to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 2:03pm Carmichael:

Did turntable 2 finally die? I know it was problematic for a long time.
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:06pm Mary Wing:

Turntable 2 here in studio B? I didn't think it had any problems? Perhaps you mean the one in studio A?
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:06pm Dean:

The earliest quote supplied by OED for the entry is 1701 (from Defoe). The latest is 1993. Five of the eight quotes are pre-20th century. Contra LaTour, I believe we have always been modern.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 2:08pm coelacanth∅:

work to do
Thanks Mary!
tchau camaradas
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:09pm Mary Wing:

By the way, those little black radio icons next to Ike's, Carmichael's, docotorjazz's coelacanth's, and Ken From Hyde Park's posts mean that they are Swag for Lifers--big thanks to them all for supporting WFMU on a monthly basis! (You can do it too, by the way; just set up your Swag For Life pledge now!)
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:09pm weinstein:

I heard you wondering how we can do 4 hours at Ridgewood Radio. We wondered too until I found 2000 hours of unheard recordings!
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:11pm Mary Wing:

Woo hoo, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 2:13pm fred:

Good afternoon Mary and whateverists
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:13pm rw:

Dean, that makes sense, but I'm just so programmed to think of modern referring to the 1950s and 60s that my brain goes there first.

Love that Al Stewart track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 2:17pm doctorjazz:

(But I lost my little heart icon, very sad!)
Have this Aztec Camera single (actually a 12 inch single, if I remember...), LOVE IT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 2:19pm doctorjazz:

This version is shorter than the Jump I have, which has a wild guitar solo at the end.
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:20pm Dean:

I'm a SWLer, too, as of a week ago yesterday, Tony Coulter's show, but since I'm not registered, no icons!
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:20pm Mary Wing:

Ooh, I wish I had the 12" version of Jump!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 2:22pm northguineahills:

Don't go back to Rockville! An old fave of mine!
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 2:22pm Roberto:

My wife is from Rockland County. Before we lived together I would sing to her "Don't Go Back to Rockland"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 2:22pm northguineahills:

UM played that Aztec Camera back in 2013, nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 2:22pm doctorjazz:

OH NO! pop up froze, and won't restart. Likely have to reboot, crap!
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:22pm Mary Wing:

Well, thanks, Dean! Silent Swaggers are cool folks, too!
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:26pm Dean:

Well, not exactly silent, I guess.
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:27pm Dean:

Hey, being a WFMU DJ means never having to say you're sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 2:30pm Ike:

"(Don't Go Back To) Rockville" got loads of airplay on WHFS in Maryland back in the day because Rockville MD was a populous suburb w/a lot of their listeners, but I presume R.E.M. was actually referring to Georgia?
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:33pm Mary Wing:

If not Silent, then Stealthy Swaggers, perhaps?
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:34pm Mary Wing:

Gee, I never thought about that, Ike; I always thought they meant Rockville, MD.
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:35pm Listener142985:

Um, where does one register as a SFL'er? I want my little radio.
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 2:35pm Roberto:

I always assumed it was a metaphorical Rockville. Or Rockland County :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 2:36pm doctorjazz:

I like the tag, @Dean, Silent Swagger! Maybe a Marvel movie to come...
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:39pm Mary Wing:

You need to create a user account with the email address attached to your pledge, 142985.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 2:40pm fred:

This Drab Majesty is new? This sounds like it could have been released 35 years ago
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:40pm rw:

I always thought of it as Rockville, MD but I'm not sure why. I also always thought of it as don't go back to school. Maybe because of the line about wasting another year.
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:40pm geezerette:

Stealthy Swaggers sounds like a band or a Dickens character.
:D
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:41pm Dean:

"Please, sir, may I have some swag?"
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:42pm rw:

Dean, you get the silent swag.
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:44pm rw:

Mary, is your show almost over? Where does the time go??
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:44pm geezerette:

You want MORE? Ungrateful wretch, be gone with you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 2:45pm Webhamster Henry:

I buried Paul. You heard it first!
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:45pm geezerette:

Wow, sounds exactly the same backwards!
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:46pm Dean:

Backwards, or Russian?
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:46pm geezerette:

How does it sound inside out?
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 2:47pm Roberto:

The backwards "ho ho ho he he he ha ha ha" is pefect.
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 2:47pm Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

Aural topology: anybody got a major in that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 2:47pm doctorjazz:

Groovy, man!
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:47pm geezerette:

.....or...Esperanto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 2:47pm Carmichael:

Do you have time for the Rutles' Piggy in the Middle backwards?
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 2:48pm Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

On a four track machine, I understand, this whole thing.
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:48pm geezerette:

Sem, you are a pioneer!
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 2:49pm Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

Speaking of circling the wagons, that conflagration out West, nowhjere near you, I guess?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 2:50pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Left channel > A song
Right channel > Same song backwards

Would that drive a person mad?
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:51pm Listener142985:

ok-thx
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 2:51pm geezerette:

Thanks, no, nt yet! It's very hot though.
Actually, there was a fire near Mt. Wilson where transmitters are. Thanks for asking!
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 2:51pm Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

Fatback. That explains the oral fixation.
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:55pm Dean:

Not backwards, but Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" processed thus: "Analog assemblage using LP with four drilled off-center spindle holes; synched using quarter inch tape four-track."

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 2:55pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Mary!
Fun show!
(sounds like you got a good work out running turntable to turntable)
  Wed. 10/18/17 2:56pm rw:

geezerette. I saw that Mt. Wilson fire yesterday morning. Is it out yet? I was hoping it wouldn't get the telescopes up there.

Oh, that's it. Thanks Mary! Later kids!
Avatar    Wed. 10/18/17 2:56pm Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

Yes, what Dr. Jazz said. Thanks, Mary. See and whatever-ones next time round the block.

Thanks, Mary! Super fun show!!! Hope your arms aren't tired, but now you know how to fly.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/18/17 2:59pm fred:

Thanks Mary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/18/17 2:59pm Ike:

Yeah, don't you hate it when they say "instrumental" but they mean "instrumental, except with backing vocals"?! Sheesh.
Avatar Wed. 10/18/17 3:00pm Mary Wing:

Thanks for listening, it was loads of fun today!
