Tonight TSP returns to one of our favorite themes, global brass band music! We want to get you psyched for our all-ages (BYOB) brass band extravaganza, HONK NYC! in NJ! Thursday night October 12th at our own Monty Hall, 43 Montgomery Street in Jersey City, NJ.

This year for the first time our Monty Hall collaboration with the fabulous HONK NYC! festival of brass and street bands (see 2015 video below for past evidence) includes NY's first and foremost street brass juggernaut, the legendary Hungry March Band. Plus Damas de Ferro, a dynamic all-women's band from Brazil, superb NOLA second line outfit New Creations and more. And if you’re free early you can march with the bands from Jersey City’s Newark Ave pedestrian plaza (at Two Boots) to Monty Hall before the show!

Good evening Bas and everyone!

Solid gold brass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Rob W:

Doug Werewolf, you're hired!
  6:42pm St Joe:

The Serbs just called; they wouldn't mind some Bregović they said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Rob W:

Ah yes St Joe, can do!
  6:50pm Philip:

I usually love this show and appreciate the variety of music from around the world. But this music today is torture. I think I'm challenging myself not to change the station, but it's killing me.
  6:50pm St Joe:

Great. I really don't need them mad at me.

prrrtz prrrtz!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Rob W:

I did issue a disclaimer at the top of the show!
  6:52pm St Joe:

@phillip. songs about machine guns? what's not to like?
  7:08pm cat:

group doueh and all the brass bands rule. but sometimes i like the more familiar brass band tones of the washington post march by sousa played by a brass quintet
  7:10pm cat:

washington post march is a beautiful song and very american sounding, but i always love it when rob takes us on a musical journey across the world
  7:17pm cat:

sousa's washington post is like an aural palate cleanser after so much amazing, complicated brass music from all these disparate countries
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm katie:

The breadth of brass is astounding this evening.
  7:23pm cat:

its better than being ass-sounding
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Rob W:

Katie, you're hired!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Smilty69:

Hello Rob and friends. I was fortunate to catch the Nigerian parade on 2nd Ave this afternoon. The music and dancing was incredible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Rob W:

That sounds great Smilty69!
  7:54pm Ike:

Oh dang I wish I'd gone to the Nigerian parade instead of the super lame Korean and Diwali street fests in midtown. Was there any food?
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Threemoons:

Hola all. Dropping in for a bit; have WFMU blasting on my Echo while I attempt apartment decrappification activities. Gonna get my biohazard suit on...
  8:11pm Ike:

I'm downstairs at Monty Hall and there's not many people waiting to see Group Doueh and $75 Bill! Where is everyone!? Y'all missing out.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Threemoons:

Oooh, I love me some Hungry March Band. IIRC they were the house band for Bindelstiff Family Cirkus back in the day...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Rob W:

I'll see you down there soon Ike! 75 Dollar Bill are great too, inspired by the Sahel and the Mississippi Delta and they start at 8:30! You're excused folks if you have to miss the end of my show to head on over to Monty Hall!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Rob W:

Yes Threemoons, that's right!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Threemoons:

Rob W thanks! :D Another useless musical trivia point: Back then, some of their sheet music/regular rotation items were actually old Yiddish favorites--I remember them playing "Alle Brieder" once after a show. Turns out that Jennifer Miller, the Bearded Lady, is or was at the time the head music curator at YIVO www.yivo.org
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Rob W:

Very interesting!
  8:49pm wittsend:

cool hungry brass band used to roll through my old warehouse for parties all the time
