Jill B.:
Weather here just like summer. In the upper 80's now and again tomorrow, then back down to what we consider for fall. Got back yesterday afternoon from a quick trip to upper Washington to visit some dear old friends, the Bacigalupi's, and a Lopez friend. Everyone is getting too damn old! Seattle area traffic an absolute nightmare. Thank goodness for GPS! Good to be back in the Willamette Valley.
Wed. 9/27/17 7:25pm
Jill B.:
Were the War Pigs making raspberries????
![]() |
![]() Ha ha, I think that was their synthesizer :) |
![]() |
![]() Jealous of your trip to Seattle ... I want to go back soon |
Wed. 9/27/17 7:28pm
Jill B.:
Well, I must admit that Washington is so much prettier that Oregon. Majestic mountains and tons of evergreen trees. I do love Washington, just not the areas we visited.
![]() |
![]() Dug the hell out of Portland during my visit. And pics from friends living in Sammamish, WA have looked amazing, like some conifer-version of Lothlórien. |
![]() |
![]() Pics I've seen of Oregon are pretty, too. I'm thinking of the Columbia River Gorge, but not sure what it's like since the fires. Those looked horrible and scary. |
![]() |
![]() Dig. |
![]() |
![]() Ike! |
![]() |
![]() From now on, I'm requesting the "conifer-version" of everything |
![]() |
![]() I'm told by locals the damage is heart-rending. |
![]() |
![]() Just read your email Mom -- I'll give you a call tomorrow! |

Parq:
Saw Oregon as a kid, Columbia valley outside Portland (also saw the Timberline Lodge, which stood in for the Colorado resort in The Shining), but didn't see Portland town. Remember thinking it was pretty. Seen Seattle in some detail and also the mountains near the Ranier peak and thoroughly enjoyed both. |
Wed. 9/27/17 7:40pm
Jill B.:
James.......yep, Portland is a pretty cool place. Love visiting there, but since we are such "country folks" Corvallis has been, for us, a great place to live. Melinda......what we could see of the Columbia Gorge as we traveled south on I-205, was beautiful. The burned areas are further east than we could see from the highway.

This music sounds like the Monterey aquarium!
![]() |
![]() So much damage this year to so many places, across the country, all over the world -- seems like much more so than usual |

![]() The Northwest is an area I've never visited but want to. |

Wed. 9/27/17 7:43pm

@Parq when you said you saw Oregon as a kid, my first thought was that you saw the Ralph Towner/Colin Walcott jazz-classical band of the same name |
Wed. 9/27/17 7:43pm

Gary, I feel the same. It is like "god" is shaking her fist and saying to all of us earthlings.....wake up and protect mother earth!

![]() |
![]() Subliterate morons and an alarming number of non-moron white people, incl. way too many middle-class folk here in NJ. |

Parq:
It's been obvious for a while that the red half of the country will support anybody -- ANYBODY -- as long as he's a Republican. That was already clear when evangelical "Christians" overwhelmingly supported a Mormon presidential candidate. Remember when they couldn't abide the thought of a Catholic? (PS, they still couldn't -- if he was a Democrat.) |

re:Gary @7.42 -i just re-read a short story by Gabriel García-Márquez and at one point he mentions how this place in the story was decimated by selfish, short-sighted industrial and farming practices and clearcutting of forests, leaving the world more prone to hurricanes and devastating natural disasters. he said this in a very casual way, as if the obvious was in fact obvious to people in general at one point in history. |

Ouch! Beans.......not good!!! A little goes a long way. If you soak the beans, make sure you drain them afterward and rinse the heck out of them. Then cook them up and serve them to someone else!

Coales, it's worth noting that Garcia Marquez offered all of his most shocking or provocative twists in that same flat, matter-of-fact tone. It's one of the really cool -- and disturbing -- things about reading his stuff. |

They cook 'em a second time, so the buffalo sauce spice-heat gets reduced, or so the waitress explained or guessed. So they're kinda crispy like good fried chicken. No spice-heat at all, really, which is fine by me. Bingery without injury. |
