Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

@Dean those are some of the creepiest selfies. But funny. Interesting how she was critical of social media photo-sharing in the interview a year ago, but has now embraced it.

  Fri. 8/11/17 12:19pm Dean:

I wasn't aware that she had commented critically about social media, @melinda, but maybe she has appropriated, rather than embraced, it? I saw a CS show at LA's MOCA many years ago. Most impressive was a monumental photograph of what looked like gallons of vomit. At closer inspection one could see that it was just a bunch of stuff.
Avatar Fri. 8/11/17 12:19pm βrian:

@Generally, it's a condition of annoyance and nuisance. Specifically, it's a disease affecting poultry.

  Fri. 8/11/17 12:21pm Marie:

Dean and Melinda, are you guys talking re: Cindy Sherman? Her selfies reminded me of some contemporary cartoons, horror, sci-fi--facial images you would see there.

Yep, @Marie, prompted by the GIF.
Avatar Fri. 8/11/17 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

Warning much appreciated. If Johnny's video of "Hurt" fucked me up as much as it did first time I saw, it, I envision Glen's video for that utterly leveling me.
  Fri. 8/11/17 12:24pm Marie:

Re: C. Sherman selfies--some of them reminded me of people who have had some serious plastic surgery!
Avatar Fri. 8/11/17 12:24pm βrian:

Some Cindy Sherman pics remind me of the scene in Brazil where the woman is having her face, eh, reconfigured?

  Fri. 8/11/17 12:27pm Dean:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/11/17 12:29pm Uncle Michael:

Doug! Wendy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/11/17 12:32pm melinda:

Dean the part about criticizing social media photo sharing I got from the Times article you linked, they quoted her from an interview. I wasn't trying to suggest hypocrisy on her part, more that the pull of social media can be hard to resist. Whether you see it as an embrace or appropriation, it's clear that she's using the platform in an atypical way compared to the average Instagrammer. But it also sounds like you kinda have to be on Instagram now if you're an artist. I like her sense of humor/horror, too. Especially the hospital selfie w/caption: On the mend!
  Fri. 8/11/17 12:38pm Dean:

Nor was I trying to suggest that you were trying to suggest hypocrisy, @melinda. Agree 100% with your take.

Avatar Fri. 8/11/17 1:31pm The Oscar:

Back in my record store days, we used to get an old codger who claimed to be Duane Eddy's cousin-- which I kind of believe, because why would you make that up?-- but everything he said about the music industry was hilariously, demonstrably wrong. At one point, he confided that Lee Hazlewood wasn't doing too well (he had been dead for a good five years by then).

@hyde Their movie parodies were so great-- I love the Bergman one, and the Godfather episode is a straight-up masterpiece.

Anyone see where Ramsey Lewis opened an "ask me anything" thread on Facebook this past week?

Glad you're enjoying, Bob.

@doctorjazz I'm fairly certain my own name is not coincidental of my dad's jazz habit (he's told me that Dexter was another contender).

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/11/17 2:38pm joe:

Avatar Fri. 8/11/17 2:55pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Fun idea for a future show or marathon premium: songs that start with someone getting into a car and starting the ignition. "Love is the Drug." "Autobahn." And this Cash number.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/11/17 2:55pm Uncle Michael:

Wendy, I've done that show!
