Afternoon, Cheyenne and all! Literal wax trax today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/6/17 3:02pm doctorjazz:

Sounds like fun, psyched!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:02pm Webhamster Henry:

Uh Oh! Marimbaphone Garrison Keillor is your background music!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:03pm Cheyenne:

Howdy friends & hamsters! Looking very forward to sharing these cuts with y'all. Some really remarkable stuff from the early days of the FMA, and the earlier days of music recording itself!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:03pm listener james from westwood:

That first track has serious in-theme potential.
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:03pm Webhamster Henry:

More acoustic recordings today will be played as MAC returns to the summer schedule.
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:04pm Cheyenne:

Some of these cuts are from MAC's old shows. I am excited that he and Mike are making a return to WFMU for the summer!
  Tue. 6/6/17 3:06pm Doug Schulkind:

I believe Vernon Dalhart created that stage name by putting together the names of two towns in Texas. Greetings, Cheyenne and Partygoers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/6/17 3:06pm Stanley:

Hi Cheyenne.
Love the fact you put these shows out as podcasts.
I've listened to the Ambient Ataraxia show two or three times. Beautiful stuff to fall asleep to.
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:06pm Webhamster Henry:

Cylinder skips!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:06pm Cheyenne:

Howdy Stanley! Glad you liked it! There'll be much more where that came from - enjoy!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:08pm Cheyenne:

@Doug that's a good strategy! Being from Kentucky I could be Nonesuch Monkey's Eyebrow. Lotsa bonkers names for towns in my home state.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/6/17 3:09pm Stanley:

A quick question, Cheyenne - on the FMA website, would there be a possibilty of allowing users to create playlists?
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:10pm Cheyenne:

@Stanley - Yep, anyone who can login can make playlists on FMA.
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:11pm Webhamster Henry:

Imagine a world where about 20% of all recording was Billy Murray.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/6/17 3:11pm Parq:

This Billy Murray is whetting my appetite for Mac's return -- tonight, isn't it?
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:12pm listener james from westwood:

That would be a grand world indeed, WH!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:12pm Cheyenne:

Billy Murray shows up a lot in the FMA historic/old time genre! And yes, @Parq, I'm pretty sure tonight's the night!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:13pm Webhamster Henry:

08:00 pm - 09:00 pm
The Antique Phonograph Music Program• with MAC and Mike Haar
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/6/17 3:16pm Parq:

And pleased to be here now, listening to this show.
  Tue. 6/6/17 3:16pm Dean:

A few nights ago I viewed a 1 hr., 20 min., talk Ken Freedman gave at Harvard's Berkman Center c.2006 about the early development of FMA. Really fascinating. Ken's grasp of technological, legal, and cultural dynamics was impressive. (He hiccoughed only once, having failed to recognize that copyright does not require registration. But that's an understandable lapse.) I learned a ton.
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:19pm Cheyenne:

@Dean - yes, without his direction and vision FMA would not exist! So happy to be part of the effort and bringing an hour of FMA programming to the GTDR stream each week.
  Tue. 6/6/17 3:23pm Doug Schulkind:

If there's a Monkey's Eyebrow, you've to think there's a Rat's Ass somewhere in the state.
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:24pm Webhamster Henry:

Liz Berg plays a lot of FMA material, but I'm often listening to Tony Coulter (Tape Hiss is not archived). I guess I'm too lazy to make my own FMA selections - so thanks for the show!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:26pm Cheyenne:

Haha, no problem @Webhamster! And @Doug, there probably is, I just haven't driven past it in my travels. I have driven past Gnaw Bone, Indiana, probably also known for its rats.
  Tue. 6/6/17 3:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Pennsylvania apparently has some pretty bizarre pace names, but I still refuse to believe I actually live here, so I am blissfully uninformed.
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:30pm Cheyenne:

Kentucky also has a strange habit of pronouncing things wildly incorrectly: Versailles like "Ver-SAYL-s", Athens like "AY-thuns" etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/6/17 3:30pm northguineahills:

I was about to ask or trawl the innertubes about this song, and lo and behold, you provide a link for us. Thanks Cheyenne!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:32pm Cheyenne:

Every Excavated Shellac song has an in-depth historical blurb, it's great. His blog has similarly detailed entries for each song. That song in particular is so intense I thought about leaving it out, but it's definitely an important historical document.
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:36pm Cheyenne:

excavatedshellac.com in case you're curious!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:37pm Cheyenne:

Also cylinders.library.ucsb.edu is a great place to look for historic music - they shared a few choice bits with FMA and have a HUGE collection on their site.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/6/17 3:37pm Stanley:

Great, that's me signed up on the FMA website and all ready for me to curate my own 'show'.
This track, by the way, is terrific.
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:40pm Cheyenne:

@Stanley - excellent! Welcome to the big weird FMA fam! If you make any playlists you'd like us to feature, get in touch anytime - we run highlights on our blog sometimes for active users who let us know they're making playlists. :)
  Tue. 6/6/17 3:41pm will:

John kimmel was one of the best Irish accordionists of his generation. I own couple 78s by him
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:42pm Cheyenne:

@will - lucky you! He's quite the virtuoso.
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:53pm Cheyenne:

"Thakur’s vocal style is immediately dramatic. He improvises and modulates his voice on lyrics and syllables in an almost dizzying fashion (most apparent in Part 2 of today’s post), known as bol taan in Indian classical music." - Excavated Shellac

Also, don't forget to hop aboard the Continental Subway here in a couple minutes! wfmu.org...

To these Western tuned ears, Pandit sounds pretty creepy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/6/17 3:56pm doctorjazz:

I have to register on the FMA...too lazy/too little time, etc etc
thanks for curating, Cheyenne, fun show!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:57pm Cheyenne:

Full playlist for this show is downloadable via FMA and podcast! For individual songs on FMA: freemusicarchive.org...
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:58pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Cheyenne!
Avatar Tue. 6/6/17 3:59pm Cheyenne:

Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/6/17 3:59pm Stanley:

Great show, thanks Cheyenne
  Tue. 6/6/17 3:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Loved the old sounds, Cheyenne. Perfect listening whilst sitting with my 97-year-old pops in the hospital. Cheered up the room immeasurably.
