this kind of vocal will always remind me of the album Natural Elements by Shakti, which is where i heard it first
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:14pm Gary:

I need to hear that album
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:17pm hyde:

i haven't listened to that album in maybe thirty years. vocals are by Vikku Vinayakram. the John McLaughlin jazz/rock fusion from Mahavishnu Orchestra has stood the test of time better'n most. maybe his Indo-fusion does too!

What a compelling and majestic sound.

Geezerette! Lovely to see you here!
  Wed. 4/26/17 7:30pm Dean:

First I've heard of Kalniņš, so I checked the Fanfare archive of reviews, two of which stand out. One includes this passage about Kalniņš's "Rock" symphony:

"I highly recommend it to your listening as an example (along with Glen Roger Davis’s rock-influenced Piano Concerto in F) of how one can write real, substantive music while still using a rock beat. In fact, in the latter portion of this movement, the rhythm seems to combine ethnic folk music with the rock drummer! In addition, [cond. Kristjan] Järvi has all of the disparate threads of this score firmly under control, which leads to a particularly fascinating and engaging performance. Thus what I assumed would be a low point turns out to be one of the highlights of the disc."

Another reviewer on a different recording of the same symphony is less flattering. "It's endlessly repetitive, banal, and cutesy pseudo-music, going absolutely nowhere in two whole record sides of the most sickening clichés. I've tried to find just a few minutes in this piece that I can tolerate and have been completely unsuccessful."

To each his own!
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:34pm listener james from westwood:

Entirely new to me as well, and glad for the sweeping intro!
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:35pm geezerette:

haha! Benjamin Britten /King Crimson...
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:37pm Gary:

Howdy, Dean! WE'll be hearing from that symphony next set!
  Wed. 4/26/17 7:40pm Dean:

The Naïve release with Järvi from c.2015 is the subject of the first review, a Melodiya, cond. Vigners c.1980, the second.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:43pm geezerette:

reminds me a bit of Lotte Lenya.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:43pm Gary:

It does, yes!
  Wed. 4/26/17 7:44pm Dean:

Reminds *me* a lotta Lenya!

Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:46pm geezerette:

Or classically trained Pussy Riot.
  Wed. 4/26/17 7:46pm Dean:

Hate to say this, but the rock-combo-surrounded-by-orchestra ensemble brings to mind Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Center of the Earth, too.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:47pm Gary:

Heh, no argument there
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:47pm geezerette:

The decadent phase of R&R. :D

I really really really want to hear an 80s recording of this oratorio, James, but I'm not sure if he got it past the censors

Some health issues, which I will email you about later. But....we are getting better and better each day. A clerk at the hardware store this morning said tht she had heard that Corvallis has had some amount of rain for the last 165 days. More than recorded in the last 75 years. We are "praying" for sun!
  Wed. 4/26/17 7:59pm Dean:

Fanfare recently turned me on to Miloslav Kabeláč, a Czech composer who lived through the 20th C. until '79. He, too, had his artistic run-ins with the authorities. No rock sensibilities at work, but a recent complete symphonies release has garnered high acclaim. Give a listen to "The Mystery of Time."
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 7:59pm geezerette:

would love to have a translated text.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:02pm geezerette:

Dean,thanks for sharing!
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:04pm hyde:

oh, no. i missed a Rick Wakeman "Journey to the Center of the Earth" reference. i confess that circa 1979 or so, i really loved that LP.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:07pm Gary:

Oh, Mom, so sorry to hear about that -- we can talk after the show tonight or tomorrow
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:11pm Gary:

Thanks for that heads up, Dean -- will seek Kabeláč out, definitely!
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:12pm northguineahills:

Is the crackling on my end, or the recordings?
  Wed. 4/26/17 8:12pm Dean:

Hearing it here, too.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:12pm Gary:

These aren't the best recordings, but not sure about the cracking ... anyone else?
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:13pm Gary:

Okay, I hear it on my phone ... might have to reboot or something?
  Wed. 4/26/17 8:13pm Dean:

Doesn't sound like a noisy LP or worn out tape. More like radio interruption and distortion.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:15pm Gary:

Wonder if it's me or the station ... let me email some folks
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:15pm Gary:

Gotta reboot -- hold on
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:15pm Gary:

I need a new computer! Firing it back up now
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:17pm northguineahills:

Usually I only get that crackling when my iTunes is about to poop itself, but after switching to the pop-up, it continued.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:17pm hyde:

i like this Gene Clark tune a lot, fwiw
  Wed. 4/26/17 8:17pm Dean:

I need a new disk transport, subwoofer, amplifiers, maybe even a preamplifier, too. Ain't gonna happen any time soon.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:17pm Gary:

Okay, we're back
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:18pm listener james from westwood:

My iTunes just indeed pooped itself, but back on GTDR and now the Bodega sounds clean!
  Wed. 4/26/17 8:18pm Dean:

And cables.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:19pm Gary:

The crazy sound this time is the track
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:23pm Gary:

NGH!
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:24pm Gary:

I don't know if anyone shares my love of effed up tracks like this :)
  Wed. 4/26/17 8:25pm Dean:

Hell, yes. Wolfgang Mitterer's Radio Fractal/Beat Music is a cornucopia of effed up track!
  Wed. 4/26/17 8:26pm Dean:

And The Beatles' "You Know My Name, Look Up the Number."
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:27pm Gary:

I love that song
  Wed. 4/26/17 8:32pm Jill B.:

Gary, check your email when you finish tonight's show.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:35pm northguineahills:

Someone must have played Kodek before, the name sounds familar.
  Wed. 4/26/17 8:37pm Dean:

Holst is marvelous. The Planets is just the tip of the iceberg.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:39pm Gary:

Will do, Mom
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:48pm geezerette:

So much going on in all this music.
Unpredictable. Such a joy.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:49pm Gary:

I totally slipped down Imants Kalniņš rabbit hole this week, I must admit
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:50pm geezerette:

Furnature must have been pretty eccentric.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:51pm Gary:

Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:54pm geezerette:

would be nice if I actually looked at screen. sheesh.
  Wed. 4/26/17 8:55pm Dean:

Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:56pm Gary:

I wasn't making fun of you, Geeze! I was making a (bad) pun :)
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:57pm Gary:

HOW COULD THERE BE SO MANY PEOPLE INSIDE THIS ONE PERSON?!?
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 8:58pm geezerette:

Suddenly went all Brian Wilson on me!

Oh I know that Gary. No offense was taken.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 9:01pm geezerette:

It's very hippy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/26/17 9:11pm coelacanth∅:

...i don't own any funiture; though i used to have a chair on which, uh, there was, er, sometimes fun on...
...Buuut, anyway... my father once invested in a truckload of inflatable furniture...one of many brilliant business ventures that made him a fortune - which might qualify as funiture?
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 9:13pm geezerette:

(chuckle/snort!)
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 9:14pm Gary:

Speaking of funiture ... when are they bringing back beanbags? Cuz this is definitely a beanbag show tonight
  Wed. 4/26/17 9:16pm Dean:

I'm a rigid wooden chair kinda guy, frankly. Ergonomically sound furniture makes me feel queasy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/26/17 9:17pm coelacanth∅:

haha! i've thought about bean bag chairs lately because i recently read a charlie brown/peanuts book from the 70s!
...i never liked 'em much but most of our family did.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 9:17pm geezerette:

Wow Dean, great graphics!

Gary, totally! Not that I have any idea what you mean.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 9:18pm geezerette:

I like Bertoia, but you really need cushions.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 9:19pm Gary:

The next track translates as "My Hot New Song" ... I shit you not
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/26/17 9:22pm coelacanth∅:

i think i've never sat in a bertoia. i agree with Dean, sort of. if i'm at home and in a chair, i'm doing something like writing, drawing or reading...otherwise i'll just lie down! (or sit in my car to talk on the phone)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/26/17 9:23pm coelacanth∅:

(the "sort of" is because i don't much care what material the chair is made of, and the one at my computer at home is metal.)
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 9:43pm hyde:

i've never sat in a bertoia, either, but i've sure listened to that harry bertoia box set. and its aces.

This Bodega is enchanted.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/26/17 9:51pm coelacanth∅:

hyde do you have that box?
-all i've heard from it is what was played on wfmu - i think the 2016 fund raiser it was a grand prize on someone's show.
Avatar Wed. 4/26/17 9:53pm geezerette:

yeah, hyde, incredible career! The music and furniture were related.

Coel, Harry Bertoia was a singular guy. harrybertoia.org

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 4/26/17 9:57pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks g - but i knew! when Bryce(?) mentioned a couple a years ago that the maker of the music he'd just played made chairs, i fell into a Bertoia wormhole.
