I only recently tracked down a copy of the Parlan-Mosaic (Blue Note) box. great stuff. best is the trio w/ Tucker & Harewood. Jeff, you might have some sideman dates in your collection: Lou Donaldson, Turrentine, Dexter Gordon's Doin' Alright, plus Booker Ervin's Cookin' (not Blue Note(

Just dropping in to say gotta run! Happy D:Oings, Jeff and all!
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 9:43am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Peter. Hadn't realized (or forgot?) that there was even a Parlan Mosaic box. It is one of the big sets? Or one of the Selects?
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 9:44am Jeff Golick:

Hi Doug! Bye Doug!
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 9:48am duke:

Just in time for Rahsaan Roland Kirk
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 9:49am Peter from DE:

Parlan Mosaic one of the big ones. 5 CD's collecting 7 LP sessions. two trio sessions, one trio plus Ray Baretto, two quintets w/ the Turrentine Bros., one with Booker Ervin & Grant Green, another w/ Ervin and Johnny Coles

Whoa, @Peter. Nice pick up.

Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:12am Jeff Golick:

What'd you make? Hi, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:15am doctorjazz:

The Parlan Mosaic is a really good one. 5 CD complete Blue Note sessions.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:16am Peter from DE:

Really making the case for the links between ICP and Mingus!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:16am Andrew Waterloo:

Somebody shared a great video of Mengelberg playing light quirky piano while Han Bennink played a pizza box lid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:16am doctorjazz:

Sad passings, but makes for a great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:17am doctorjazz:

Bennink was a performing madman!
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:24am Jeff Golick:

Bennink can play anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:26am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sad memorial - but the Mingus stylee seems just the right medicine this moment. Post-MardiGras N'Orleans style funeral, perhaps...

here it is for later: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:27am Peter from DE:

Misha's cat(s) were talented too.
www.youtube.com...
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:28am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Andrew!

Good ears, re Mingus, @Peter & @RRN63. Hadn't consciously made the connection...
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:28am Jeff Golick:

Mengelberg (in)famously recorded a parrot in duet with some Dolphy on record, if I have that right.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:29am Jeff Golick:

(He was a Fluxus guy.)
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Misha should really get a full three hours, now that I've started into this...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Honestly I wasn't familiar w/ his name @ all - but BobBrainen (on Saturdays) just played a track or two - & Mingus was the 1st thing I thot - & then he played Dolphy anyhow...This sounds halfway twixt Monk & Taylor - which is an interesting place to be...
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:36am Peter from DE:

lucky to see the quartet w/ Douglas in Philly. Show began w/ Bennink playing "ah leu cha" solo (based on Philly Joe). then Mengelberg started banging left-hand clusters and it eventually revealed itself to be a deconstructed My Funny Valentine (the bridge)
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:40am Jeff Golick:

Lucky, indeed, @Peter!

@RRN63: just read an older intvw with Mengelberg wherein he said he found Cecil's concept repetitive (& not in a good way).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:43am annie:

good morning!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:44am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Jazz is so rich.
Yeah - you could say percussive. Do you think he influenced him anyhow?
Fluxus & NYC - this is a thing...never knew there was a direct Jazz connection, but why not...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:44am Scraps:

Tayror repetitive? Mengelberg said that? Well, shakes my head....
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:45am Peter from DE:

I love Cecil but I do think he plays the same rhythms and scales all the time. I think of Mengelberg and Jaki Byard -- having mastery of old styles, harmonic construction, as well as out playing.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:48am Jeff Golick:

Hey up there, @annie! G'morning to you.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:49am Jeff Golick:

Yay, Byard is a good comparison. So much contained in one player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting as Taylor's background was reportedly quite Academic. Hard to imagine any Out piano player not being influenced by him...It's often surprising to hear one Artist's take on another being critical (to whatever degree) - but then, if they wanted to do what another did, they wouldn't be themselves - which takes a huge amount of belief, effort & assertion, after all.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:52am Peter from DE:

plus Byard too had a streak of absurdism.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:54am Peter from DE:

early Taylor clearly comes out of Ellington, so he is definitely rooted. many players sound superficially like Taylor, but when you listen you realize that their clusters are different and their rhythms are different (e.g. Don Pullen)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:56am doctorjazz:

Byard was fun, CT not so much. Mengleberg was also fun. Dutch stuff seems to love being playful, from what I've heard of it. Breuker was a riot in concert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:57am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My understanding is that the Fluxus credo has involved Dada-like aesthetics, & Happenings / Performance Art - but w/ notably more Inclusive & Optimistic aims then a lot of Modernists.
Thx for the Schoolin' all youse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 10:58am doctorjazz:

Never heard Taylor at all in Pullen, he stretched bop and the clusters come out of a bebop rhythmic sensibility
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:58am Peter from DE:

Fluxus definitely included more artists of color (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, many others)
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:59am Peter from DE:

@doctorjazz I agree. but many superficial listeners assume Pullen is derivative. (see also: Brad Mehldau - Bill Evans -- Mehldau is actually nothing like Evans)
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 10:59am Jeff Golick:

If you're a pianist, I think you can follow Taylor or go in a completely opposite direction, but you've got to reckon with him in some way.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Derek Bailey is just the ultimate wildcard.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:00am Peter from DE:

Borah Bergman... Schlippenbach...
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:01am Jeff Golick:

Crispell, too...
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:02am Gary:

You know you're keeping me from listening to my new Downtown stash, right?
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:02am Peter from DE:

yes! early Myra Melford is interesting, maybe more out of Pullen than Taylor @doctorjazz what do you think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:03am doctorjazz:

This Groupcomposing is great...wife's away, can listen on speakers, Great fun! Dreading getting out from under the covers for the Ozzie walk...
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:04am Jeff Golick:

Well, if it's any consolation, @Gary, I'm not listening to mine either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:04am Scraps:

Early Melford sounds like Threadgill to me
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:06am Gary:

Touche
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:06am Peter from DE:

@scraps i hear that!
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:06am Jeff Golick:

S'funny, I have a hard time classifying Myra Melford. Probably haven't listened to enough of it....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:07am Scraps:

Compositionally, I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:07am doctorjazz:

I'd agree on Milford, heard and got the first trio album Jump when it came out, didn't think of it as "challenging "music like some of the more "out" pianists, say Borgman.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:08am Peter from DE:

I also hear intriguing links between Melford and Satoko Fujii
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:09am Jeff Golick:

This convo is reminding me that I need to play the new Aki Takase/David Murray album on the show, stat.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:09am Peter from DE:

@doctorjazz, yes "Jump" has grooves and forms, the improvisations go out but then come back in
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:10am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'Rood' here makes me think a bit of 20thCent. Academic composers - outside of Jazz...something about him seems to remind me of Monk (who is 2nd only to Trane for me in all of Jazz)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:10am doctorjazz:

Don't know Fuji, sounds like worth checking out. (so many holes in my musical knowledge...)
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:11am Jeff Golick:

Huh, @Peter, Fujii and Melford did an album together! www.discogs.com... - had no idea.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:11am Peter from DE:

Fujii has several different line-ups and they sound totally different. "past life" (sextet) sounds like Melford's "same river twice" with maybe a hint of early George Russell. also has trio, duo w/ trumpet, and big band(s)
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:13am Jeff Golick:

@RRN63: in that same interview I mentioned earlier, Mengelberg (who revered Monk) recalls meeting him during a Monk Qt tour of Europe -- this would be in Monk's much later years -- and Monk doesn't recall his own composition "Criss Cross." On Monk's next ride through Europe, he plays "Criss Cross." Hard to know what to believe here, but it's an interesting story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:13am doctorjazz:

So much music, so little time is becoming my mantra.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:13am Peter from DE:

@jeff Whoa! I had no idea either. i do have Fujii's duet album with Paul Bley, haven't listened it years but i remember it disappointed me. but maybe should go back to it with fresh ears
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Here's the interview link, btw: www.paristransatlantic.com...
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Fujii has been putting out a LOT of music over the last couple of years. I haven't been able to keep up with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:15am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...some of that Bennink performance you spoke of earlier...
Cheers Jeff! I think of Monk as no less than an emissary of a different sort of nervous system.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:15am Peter from DE:

@jeff not buying that Monk story. "criss cross" is on one of the 60s columbia quartet albums. actually, i do buy that he would have SAID "i don't remember that" if someone asked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:16am doctorjazz:

It's gone over 30 degrees, no excuse, take the show with me on the walk.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:17am Jeff Golick:

More Monk coming up, btw, via Mengelberg and Braxton.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:18am Peter from DE:

@jeff it is true that Monk modified the form of "criss cross"... hmm, so maybe Mengelberg is right, i spoke too soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:22am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Gonna enjoy that interview! Obviously a guy who had a lot going on idea & concept-wise. Had something to say.
Monk played games w/ personas , after all...
  Sun. 3/5/17 11:22am melinda:

Hi all
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:26am Gary:

Oh, I have a title: "Back to Braxton"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:26am doctorjazz:

No to Schappification!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My momma told me - you better Schapp around.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:29am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @melinda!
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:30am Jeff Golick:

Ha, @doc. Gotcha. Can't possibly happen. I recently had Schaap on in the car, during an hour+ drive. I think I heard two songs.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:30am Jeff Golick:

@Gary: I like it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I appreciate Schapp actually. You know what music/talk ratio you're in for. So he's a lecturer.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:33am Jeff Golick:

I appreciate Schaap, too. Though sometimes I appreciate the *concept* of Schaap more than the listening experience itself. (Kind of the way most folks feel about jazz, probably.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:34am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I wish someone would do for Trane & Hendrix what he does for Bird. I mean - I don't need it every morning...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:35am doctorjazz:

He must be the most knowledgeable Jazz guy on Earth, I've listened to him and learned stuff for years. But.it's gotten worse over the years, can't listen to a discussion on whether the pizza delivery was during the 2nd or 3rd take of Bird 's recording date.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:37am doctorjazz:

That. well You Needn't was great, getting Braxton on standard today so far...
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:40am Jeff Golick:

Yup. Not a whole lot of love for Braxton's take on standards/Monk/Parker/etc., from what I can tell, broadly speaking. But, like Schaap, the informed listener kind of knows what she's in for.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:43am Jeff Golick:

@RRN63: re Trane, have you heard those shows Doug did, when he broadcast the Colrane radio documentary, Tell Me How Long Trane's Been Gone?
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:44am northguineahills:

Came back in time for Braxton, a hero of mine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:45am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh yeah - love that doc. Taped it to cassette off NPR when people did things like that.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:45am Jeff Golick:

Yahoo, @ngh!
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:46am northguineahills:

I actually originally learned most jazz standards from Braxton's jazz standards albums. I think I have three
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:46am Jeff Golick:

That'll warp you right good, @ngh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:48am doctorjazz:

Really do like his take on standards
Didn't he do an album o of Bird/bebop stuff?
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:49am northguineahills:

I started attending my parents church occasionally just so I can gain access to their pipe organ. A steep price to pay, but the organ is so worth it! I finally recorded stuff this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:49am doctorjazz:

Almost marathon! Thanks for the great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:50am doctorjazz:

(that answered that question...have that Parker disc elsewhere...).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:52am Brian in UK:

Jeff, just back from chilly dog walk. Four seasons in one hour. Need a corpse reviver.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:53am Jeff Golick:

If you do get a corpse reviver, do use it wisely, @Brian.
Avatar Sun. 3/5/17 11:55am Gary:

This is moving
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/5/17 11:55am doctorjazz:
